Roger Federer has the opportunity to put the spectre of Athens 2004 well and truly to bed on Thursday when he faced the man who spectacularly dumped him out of the Olympics 4 years ago
Then just 18, Berdych stayed cool to outlast an out-of-sorts Federer 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 and announce himself properly to the tennis world for the first time. He went on to make the quarters before losing to Taylor Dent
That was their first ever match so Berdych did have the surprise factor element. Since then Federer has been ruthless in obtaining his revenge, Berdych has only once managed to get a set in their 6 matches since Athens. Federer won 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 in the 2006 Halle final and they've had a couple of high profile slam matches. Berdych has been quite disappoiting though both times, freezing a little on the big stage and losing 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 at Wimbledon 2006 and then 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 at this year's Aussie Open
It's been an up and down 2008 for Berdych, ranked 9 in the world this time last year he's in danger of dropping out of the top 20. He had a big run in Miami to make the semis but he's failed to defend a lot of points particularly on clay and grass (he lost in the 3rd round of Wimbledon) but he did have a confidence boosting run to the Bastaad final last month
Prediction: Federer erase those memories and plough on in straights
