There is now another Swiss man in the top ten; Roger Federer is no longer the only tennis star from his small country.
Stanislas Wawrinka is having the best year of his career, he cracked the top ten in May after a good clay season and has held onto the number nine or ten spot; he is currently ranked at ten. Wawrinka made his first Masters-Series final in Rome earlier this year; he also made the semis in the smaller event in Barcelona.
Roland Garros did not go as well for Wawrinka; he went out to Fernando Gonzalez in the third round. He followed it up with a round of 16 showing at Wimbledon. Wawrinka defeated Canadian Frank Dancevic in the first round in Beijing in three sets. He should have an easier time with Austria’s Jurgen Melzer.
Melzer has had some good results in 2008. He recently made the final in Kitzbuhel, but that tournament was played on clay. All of Melzer’s best results have come on the dirt. The surface in Beijing is a fast, low-bouncing hard court, which will benefit Wawrinka much more than Melzer.
Expect the Swiss man to advance in relatively routine fashion. Wawrinka in straight sets.

Did you know that... Jimmy Connors holds the record for most single tournament wins, he has 109 titles.
