Round one at the Olympic games in Beijing continues on Monday as Briton Andy Murray makes his Olympic singles debut.
Andy Murray vs. Yen-Hsun Lu
Andy Murray is the new world number six, a career-high ranking for the young Scot. He comes into the Olympic games off his best hard court season to date. He reached the semifinals in Toronto, losing to eventual winner Rafael Nadal. A week later, he lifted his first Master-Series trophy in Cincinnati with an impressive win over Novak Djokovic. His opponent is Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu. Lu is a good hard court player. He reached the quarterfinals in both Indianapolis and San Jose this year is enjoys a near career high ranking of 74. Murray will likely prove to be a tough task for Lu, even in front of the hometown crowd. Murray in straight sets.
Sam Querrey vs. Igor Andreev
Sam Querrey has come into his own in 2008. The American won his first ever ATP tournament in Las Vegas over Kevin Anderson and he recently advanced to the semifinals in Indianapolis, where he lost to Gilles Simon. Igor Andreev is ranked 23 in the world, but his best results come on the dirt. He made two finals in a row this year after Wimbledon, one in Gstaad and Umag. Querrey is not an easy first round opponent, in fact the American beat Andreev the only other time they’ve met, back in 2007 on the hard courts in Miami. This could be a minor upset; Querrey in three.
Lleyton Hewitt vs. Jonas Bjorkman
Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman is most likely participating in his last Olympic games. His first round opponent is the oft-injured Australian, Lleyton Hewitt. Bjorkman and Hewitt have met on six occasions, Hewitt has won each of those encounters. Their closest match came in 2001 at the Australian Open. The Swede took Hewitt the distance before losing 6-2 in the fifth set. Despite struggling with injury, Hewitt has still had a decent year. He advanced to the round of 16 before he lost to Roger Federer. Expect few surprises in this match; Hewitt in straight sets.
