Del Potro was undoubtedly player of the month for July. With most of the big names resting after 2 months of solid elite tournaments, the giant Argentine took full advantage claiming two titles on the clay. Now he's looking to make a big impact on US cement
Del Potro won back to back in Stuttgart and Kitzbuhel, dropping just one set in the entire fortnight (pretty impressive considering he faced Richard Gasquet and Philipp Kohlschreiber during that streak) and he soared to a new career high of no 24.
He missed both masters series but opportunistic tournament scheduling could again work in his favour over the next 10 days with most of the top 30 in action in Bejing. Del Potro is 3rd seed here and breezed to a 6-4, 6-2 win over qualifier Andrea Stoppini last night
After an average first 6 months littered with injuries, Del Potro's recent success has been down to getting stronger and finally utilising the big weapons in his game consistently. There's a lot of potential in his serve and with a great baseline game to back it up, he's a future top 10 prospect
He's 1-1 in past meetings with Delic, but Del Potro won 7-5, 7-6 in Indianapolis last summer. Both men stand at 6'5 and even on the tennis tour it'll be the first time for a while either man has seen eye to eye with an opponent
The week so far has been a particular success for Delic with that big win over Carlos Moya, the first major scalp he's had for a while. It's only his second ATP quarter-final this year
Prediction: Del Potro in 2
