For once in his life, Marat Safin will be the “short guy” on court today. At 6'4 the Russian is hardly used to this but he's up against one of the game's giants, John Isner who stands at 6'9
Like Ivo Karlovic, Isner is an ace machine and he exploded onto the scene last summer with some astonishing serving displays, leading to a first ATP final on debut in Washington. However that brief honeymoon period on tour ended sooner than expected, players starting to work him out and Isner's baseline limitations being exposed. He's slipped to no 133 and ATP wins have been hard to come by in the past year just the one quarter-final since that Washington run
The smaller events have little attraction for Safin these days. He enjoys the tennis tour merry-go-round but its the masters series and most of all the slams which really get the big Russian's juices flowing. After finally realising his talent on grass last month, there's been 3 early exits, losing to Starace, Wawrinka and Tursunov
This is a dangerous match for Safin, the fast bouncy courts of LA will play into ”sner's hands and if he hits a serving groove, any of those trademark Safin lapses could be costly. Isner however, is no Karlovic, his volleying ability isn't quite up there at the moment and Safin will get his chances to wrap each set up without recourse to a tiebreak.
Prediction: Safin in 3

Did you know that... Andy Roddick holds the record for fastest serve, 154.7 mph.
