  • Cincinnati preview - Carlos Moya vs. Janko Tipsarevic

    7/29/08 3:48 PM | Cheryl Murray
     - Carlos Moya attempts to turn around a losing record in the first round of Cincinnati where he will take on Janko Tipsarevic, the rising young star from Serbia.

Since making the quarterfinals in Hamburg, where he was beaten handily by Rafael Nadal, Carlos Moya has won just one match. He beat Viktor Troicki on the dirt in Umag. Otherwise, it has been a spring and summer of first round exits. Last week in Toronto he went out in the first round to the German hard courter Tommy Haas.

Tipsarevic’s star is on the rise. He was the man who took out Andy Roddick in the second round of Wimbledon, advancing all the way to the round of 16 before going down to Rainer Schuettler in four tight sets. The Serb had a disappointing start to the summer hard court swing with a first round loss in Toronto to the huge-serving Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.

Moya has a wonderful forehand when it is working well. Unfortunately for the veteran Spaniard, it has only been firing sporadically since the beginning of the year. He will most likely have difficulty dealing with the pace of Tipsarevic. His movement is not what it once was and the speed of the court in Cincinnati will hardly help Moya. Tipsarevic in straight sets.
