  • Toronto final preview - Rafael Nadal vs. Nicolas Kiefer

    7/27/08 9:14 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - Sunday’s Roger’s Cup final will mark the third time this year that Rafael Nadal has met Nicolas Kiefer. The Spaniard will be attempting to win his seventh tournament this year.

Germany’s Kiefer met Nadal last just three weeks ago in the third round of Wimbledon. The Spaniard won the encounter in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-2, 6-3. They also met in Davis Cup and in Miami; both were straight set victories for Nadal.

Kiefer has had some good results in 2008. He made the semifinals in Halle and the quarters in Hamburg. The tournament in Toronto marks his best effort for the year to date. He had two notable wins at the Roger’s Cup over world number four seed Nikolay Davydenko in the third round and seven seed James Blake in the quarters.

Rafael Nadal has proven that he is the best player in 2008, even if the rankings do not reflect his usurping of Roger Federer’s throne. He holds the French Open and Wimbledon titles and has three others to his name. Once considered a clay courter only, the tough Spaniard has developed a game that is effective on all surfaces, as evidenced by his victory at Queen’s Club and Wimbledon. A win in Toronto on Sunday would mark his first hard court title for 2008 and his third overall Masters-Series title.

While Kiefer may be able to hang with Nadal for a while, the heavy, punishing groundstrokes will likely get the better of the German. Kiefer played and exhausting three hour semifinal on Saturday against Gilles Simon; Nadal will undoubtedly exploit the German’s fatigue. Nadal in straight sets.
