Saturday night’s marquee semifinal match features the dominant world number two Rafael Nadal and in-form Scotsman Andy Murray.
The most recent meeting between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray did not quite live up to expectations. Nadal ripped through Murray in straight sets in front of the home crowd of Wimbledon 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. The match was highly anticipated particularly because Murray had fought back from a 2-0 defecit in the round of 16 against Richard Gasquet and was being lauded as a national hero. Nadal quickly and efficiently took the wind out of Murray’s sails.
The two men have met on four occasions, Nadal has won each. The only close match came in their first encounter at the Australian Open in 2007 where Murray lost 6-1 in the fifth set. Since, each encounter has been straight set affairs.
Rafael Nadal is on the hottest streak in tennis. The Roland Garros and Wimbledon title holder is on a 29 match win streak. The last time the Spaniard lost was in Rome, where a badly blistered foot sent him out in the second round to countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero. The Spaniard has somewhat surprised with his hardcourt form thus far, as they have been a surface on which he has historically struggled. In particular, Friday night’s quarterfinal match against Richard Gasquet was impressive from Nadal.
Murray is in fantastic form himself. He beat Novak Djokovic in Friday night’s other quarter for the first time in his career, showing some phenomenal tennis along the way. He has, perhaps some chance against Nadal, but the physicality of the Spaniard has always been Murray’s undoing and it is hard to imagine their semifinal to play out much differently. Nadal in three.
