  • Umag final - Igor Andreev (4) vs. Fernando Verdasco (1)

    7/20/08 5:00 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - Two of the hottest clay courters at the moment face off in an intriguing final in Umag.

Both Igor Andreev (Russia) and Spain’s Fernando Verdasco are in good form. Andreev made the finals in Gstaad last week, where he lost to an inspired Victor Hanescu. Verdasco has had a stellar grass court season, something of a surprise for a player known almost strictly for his clay court game. Verdasco made the final in Nottingham and had a surprise appearance in the round of 16 at Wimbledon. The Spaniard reached the semifinals of Bastad, where he lost to Tomas Berdych.

Andreev and Verdasco have met on two other occasions, once in 2004 and again in 2005. Verdasco won both encounters, though each were tight matches that went the distance. Sunday’s final should once again prove to be a tough contest. Both are playing well at the moment, though Verdasco has just the slightest edge because he has been serving so well. Andreev will have to be at the top of his return game in order to have a chance.

In the end, the seedings should hold true. Verdasco in three tight sets.
