Guillermo Canas and Boris Pashanski will play each other for the first time ever in Umag. At stake, a spot in the quarterfinals.
Argentine clay courter Guillermo Canas is still searching for his first tournament win in 2008. His ranking has dipped to 55 in the world, but he is still a force to be reckoned with on the red dirt. He made the quarterfinals last week in Gstaad before losing to Stanislas Wawrinka, and before that he played a Challenger event where he also made the quarterfinals.
Boris Pashanski is one of the lesser known Serbian tennis players. Ranked 130 in the world, his season has not been particularly fruitful. His best result in 2008 was an appearance in the finals of the Challenger event in Barletta, Italy. That tournament was back in March. Since then, he has suffered a series of first and second round losses including last week in Bastad, where he lost in the second round to David Ferrer.
His fortune is unlikely to change in Umag. Despite an obvious drop in form from the past couple of years, Canas is a solid clay court player. He is one of the games most effective retrievers. Pashanski would have to play a patient and clean match in order to beat the Argentine. Canas in straight sets.
