  • Bastad Quarterfinal: David Ferrer vs. Robin Söderling

    7/11/08 6:10 AM | Ricky Dimon
     - A titanic clash between the No. 4 player in the world and Sweden's highest-ranked man will take place in Bastad on Friday. The winner will move on to the semifinals of the Catella Swedish Open.

David Ferrer and Robin Söderling will do battle for the fifth time in their careers in the Bastad quarterfinals. Söderling holds a 4-1 advantage over Ferrer in the head-to-head series, but it is all tied up 1-1 on clay. Ferrer won their most recent meeting 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 on the clay courts of the Masters Series Hamburg last year.

Söderling, not too surprisingly, is 3-0 against the Spaniard on surfaces other than clay (hard and grass). After all, Söderling's game if way better suited for faster courts and that certainly has been the case in 2008. The Swede already has two indoor runner-up performances in Rotterdam and Memphis. Söderling, however, should have some confidence on dirt at the moment. He went undefeated at the World Team Championships, won two matches at the French Open, and has scored solid victories over Fabio Fognini and Olivier Rochus so far this week.

Ferrer is enjoying another outstanding season in which he is great on every surface, but outstanding on clay. Since the start of April he has won titles in Valencia and 's-Hertogenbosch, reached the quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo and at the French Open, and finished runner-up in Barcelona. On Thursday Ferrer routed Boris Pashanski 7-5, 6-1.

The first set is crucial because both men are pron to mental collapses. If Ferrer can jump all over over Söderling's second serves and attach his opponent's backhand at all costs, he could frustrate Söderling early in the match and run away with it. If Söderling's forehand is clicking he can make this competitive, but beating Ferrer on clay is just too much to ask of him.
