  • Wimbledon: Rafael Nadal vs. Mikhail Youzhny

    6/30/08 2:55 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - In a compelling rematch of last year's round of 16, Rafael Nadal will take on Russia's Mikhail Youzhny. Youzhny took the first two sets from Nadal in 2007 before a chronic back injury hampered his play. The Spaniard was able to win in five.

Youhny and Nadal have played each other ten times since their first match in 2004. Nadal has the edge at 6-4, but Youzhny won their most recent meeting in Chennai earlier this year 6-0, 6-1. The Russian has the kind of game that gives Nadal fits on quicker surfaces. He hits a hard, flat ground strokes and tends to take the ball early. The problem for Nadal is that the pace tends to rob him of the time he needs to set up his swing properly, thus taking the ball later than he would normally.

The good news for the Spaniard is that Youzhny's form since the Australian Open has stopped just short of dismal. He was ranked 8 in the world in January, but has seen his ranking slip all the way down to 17 as he struggled with inconsistent results. He was knocked out of Roland Garros in the third round and Halle in the second round.

Rafael Nadal has had a dream spring season. He won Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Hamburg, Roland Garros and Queen's Club. Had it not been for a problem with blisters in Rome, he would likely have been on a six tournament win streak. If possible, his form coming into this year's Wimbledon is better than it was last year, whereas Youzhny's is less impressive. The Russian may swipe a set from the two-time finalist, but Nadal should have the goods to get through. Nadal in four.
