  • Janko Tipsarevic vs. Rainer Schuettler

    6/30/08 6:57 AM | Jonathan Morgan
     - A pair of players no one picked for this R16 match, in the part of the draw that is absolutely wide open.

Neither man was supposed to make it here. Tipsarevic is a career top 50 player with good results this year while Schuettler was perceived as an old washed up player. Janko would put in lack luster results one week then push Federer to 10-8 in the 5th the next week. Tipsarevic has looked good this week. For a 5'11'' guy, he hits a nice speed serve. He used it as well as a very intelligent ground game to take out Roddick and make the 4th round.

Schuettler, however, looks to be playing on borrowed time. His career is at the very tail end and this is most likely a swan song. He played well in dispatching James Blake in 5 sets.

As for this match, these two have yet to play each other. Tipsarevic will play a well-thought out and tactical match by serving well, thinking out points, moving in when needed and playing defense when needed. He is a very smart player that relies more on cunning than outright power to win. Schuettler will try to do everything as well as he can but it looks like it won't be enough. Tipsarevic is playing far too well. He and his beard, tattoos, and piercings will make the Quarterfinals.
