Marat Safin last made the 2nd week of Wimbledon way back in 2001. On Friday he has a golden opportunity to repeat that feat against Italian clay-courter Andreas Seppi
He's repeated his run at the 2007 championships where he lost disappointingly in straight sets to a rampant Federer at this stage. A year on and SW19 is still reeling from Safin's destruction of Aussie Open champion Djokovic.
However this encounter with Seppi is very much a danger match for Safin. It's one he should win but the Russian's form often dips alarmingly in the matches when he's favourite. He nearly lost to British qualifier James Ward (who's outside the top 450) at Queens 2 weeks ago and in Valencia, Safin has sent Juan Carlos Ferrero crashing out in rd1 but then got sent packing himself in the next round by Robin Haase.
Seppi's currently ranked 30 after an impressive clay season (making the Hamburg semis) and he's made a decent fist of things on the grass, reaching the Nottingham quarters and winning a round at Queens. He's struggled through his first 2 matches, needing 5 sets before seeing off Florent Serra 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. He has a raking double-handed backhand but the forehand can be exposed on faster surfaces
Prediction: Safin to stumble a little but he still progresses to the last 16 in 4 sets
