Canas has progressed very quietly and smoothly through the bottom half with maximum efficiency and the tennis he's producing makes a Ferrer-Canas final (which the seedings suggest) very much on. It's the sort of match up you'd expect in an event like Valencia not on grass !
But first Canas will have to get past Marc Gicquel who's been producing some fine serve-vollley tennis this week and growing in confidence after his shock 7-5, 7-6 win over Richard Gasquet a few days ago. On Thursday he overcome Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-4 in a good old-fashioned grass-court match
Currently ranked 46, Canas is trying to atone for a poor clay season. Some tough draws and surprise round 1 defeats to Llodra (Hamburg) and Odesnik (French Open) sent him tumbling down the rankings. He's been forced to find his returning range very quickly on the grass against a string of serve-volleyers - Zverev and Bopanna
Gicquel is 14 places lower at no 60 and didn't have a great clay season either but he gets most of his points indoors. Strangely for a guy with such a big game he's always underachieved on grass in the past, not winning a match on it last year and often favouring clay challengers instead in previous years
It'll be their first match, Gicquel will need to maintain the high level of serving he's shown all match as Canas' greatest asset is his speed and he loves a target whatever the surface
Prediction: Canas in 3

Did you know that... Roger Federer didn’t lose a single set during the Australian Open in 2005.
