Frenchman Gilles Simon and Fernando Verdasco of Spain will battle on Thursday for a place in the semi-finals.
Simon and Verdasco have only met twice so far in their careers and have split the wins at one a piece. Interestingly, Verdasco won their meeting on hard court at the US Open and Simon won their meeting on clay. The results are a bit strange because Verdasco is generally thought of as a clay-courter. Hailing from Spain, he typically relies on his movement and ability to retrieve to win points. Simon is a competent clay-courter, probably more-so than many of his French compatriots, but he claims his favorite surface is hard court.
Simon recently won the tour event in Casablanca, but that was on clay and will likely have little bearing on Thursday's match. Likewise, Verdasco had a good run at Roland Garros. He made the round of 16, where he was dismantled by Rafael Nadal.
Generally, Simon is better on quicker surfaces, but this match could easily go either way.
