  • Halle Final: Roger Federer vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber

    6/15/08 5:34 AM | Jonathan Morgan
     - Federer is looking good to scoop up his 5th Halle title, but can Kohlschreiber surprise him?

    I wouldn't bet on it.

Federer has won this event every year since 03, and skipped it last year. He has a 58 match winning streak on clay and hasn't lost serve this week. He has played Kohlschreiber once before, at this Halle event back in 05, where Federer won handily.

Federer will emply his custom grass court game here as he's done all week. Solid serving, aggresive baseline play, always looking to move in and finish at net. Kohlshcreiber will try to do the same to Federer, but for various reasons, will not be able to do so. A few errors here or there, a mis-step in movement side to side, a double fault, and Kohlshcreiber has gotten broken and the set is gone.

Kohlshchreiber will try to use to home crowd support (although Federer is quite loved in Germany) to rally for the win. In order for Kohli to pull off this upset, he needs to be 100% focused from the first ball and hope that Federer makes some mistakes. And, if the first 6 months of the season are anything to go from, Federer making mistakes and losing matches are much more common than before.

Still, Federer should win this and go into Wimbledon looking to defend his crown and break Borg's record.
