#4 seed Nikolay Davydenko is looking to kick off his 2008 Roland Garros campaign with style over Swedish veteran Thomas Johansson.
As the #4 player in the world, Davydenko is usually looked over in favor of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. But there is a reason he is #4, he is an extremely consistent and dangerous player.
As for this particular match, he comes in as the heavy favorite and rightly so. He has had a fine clay season and reached the French Open semis last year. He played well in Portschach last week, taking the title over Juan Monaco, the fine Argentine clay courter.
Johansson has had a tough go of things of late, as he hasn't posted any good results recently anywhere. He even had to save match points last week in Dusseldorf against Tabara, ranked 596! Overall that tournament was a success for Johansson as he played decently all week and helped the Swedes to the title.
However, Davydenko should romp him. Davy is simply too fast around the court, in too good a physical condition, and too clean off both wings to be troubled by Johansson for any extended period of time. The head to head is 2-2, but their last meeting was in 2005, and both players are completely different compared to then.
