This will be an eagerly anticipated rematch between these two protagonists at the top of the French tennis chain
Tsonga has taken the headlines and a place in the top 15 with his explosive performances in the past year but the less well known Gilles Simon has also edged his way up the ladder, currently in and around the top 30 with a title in Bucharest and some consistent indoor results
They met just a fortnight ago in Rome producing one of the most bizarre and dramatic finishes of the year. Tsonga had failed to establish any consistency all match, at times suddenly drawing from the rich vein of form he found in Melbourne and then following those flashes of brilliance with lacklustre errors. The steadier Simon had established a 5-3 final set lead but didn’t close it out and it went to a tiebreak. Simon had the first minibreak but lost his nerve and Tsonga reeled off a string of points to lead 6-3 with 3 match points. Incredibly he not only missed all 3 but lost 5 in a row to lose the breaker 8-6 !!
Simon has earned most of his points in the world’s less glamorous clay court venues, really reaping the rewards of weaker draws. He’s done exactly that this week after making a last minute decision to get extra match practise and going for qualifying
If he’d had better success in the masters series, Tsonga would probably be in Paris by now, adjusting to the faster, bouncier clay (which should suit him more). Instead he’s been in the hunt for clay-court nous and going by form this week, he’s definitely found it
Prediction: Tight match but Tsonga in 3
