Both players had draining round 1 matches but Monfils should go into this as the fresher player having had a day’s rest.
Hernandez’s encounter with the big serving Frank Dancevic was postponed halfway through and he had to return on Tuesday morning to finish off a match which lasted nearly 3 hours in total. The Mexican eventually won 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(5) - Dancevic’s serving at the key moments keeping him in it - he saved 12/15 break points.
Hernandez and Monfils have played once before, Monfils winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in an Italian challenger 3 years ago.I’d expect the Frenchman’s bludgeoning power to prove the difference again this time, he’s come into this tournament with a lot of confidence after taking the Marrakech title last week, erasing the memory of losing in Rome qualifying and at the first hurdle in Munich. Hernandez (who was once ranked 48) enjoys most success in challengers these days, but he did make the Houston semis a month ago.
Rainer Schuettler and Santiago Ventura rarely take the limelight in ATPs now, they’ve won a string of clay titles in the past but most of their wins this year have been at the lower levels. They face in round 2, I’d probably have to pick Schuettler to edge that one after the impressive way he eventually dismantled the giant Guccione serve in round 1
