It’s a first clay masters series final for both of these players, albeit one reached in the most unfortunate of circumstances.
In particular Andy Roddick could now be a doubt for Roland Garros. After Saturday, these two will surely get a standing ovation if they last even 2 sets !
Rome has seen some classic finals in the past. Who can forget the gripping 5 hours marathons of Nadal-Coria back in 2005 and then Nadal-Federer the following year. Now the finals are only best of 3 we won’t see such drama again and the 2007 showpiece was a one-sided affair between Nadal and Gonzalez
Wawrinka has been extremely impressive all week, dispatching the likes of Murray, Ferrero and Blake with such assurance but Djokovic will go into this as the heavy favourite. Deprived of another shot at Federer in the last 4, the Serb can march a little closer to the coveted world no 1 spot by winning his second masters series title of the year.
He leads Wawrinka 5-2 on the head-to-heads winning 6-4, 6-0 in the Vienna final last autumn and again 7-6, 6-2 at Indian Wells this year. Wawrinka will now be in the top 10 as of next week, the first time there’ve been 2 Swiss players in the top 10 but at the moment Djokovic just does everything slightly better. The main area where he holds the edge is in returning ability
Prediction: Djokovic in 2
