David Ferrer has the unenviable task of trying to stop the relentless roll of Rafael Nadal on clay tomorrow. Nadal is setting the bar higher and higher in virtually every tournaments he enters at this time of the year and whatever the outcome on Sunday afternoon, records will be broken.
Nadal is bidding to become the first player ever to win 4 Barcelona titles (never mind win them consecutively !) while Ferrer could be the first man ever to win the Valencia-Barcelona double in the same year.
Although the local fans have been firmly behind every Spaniard in the draw this week, Nadal has been the main focus of their attention. He’s deservedly claimed the bulk of the adulation this week with his ability to make the nigh-impossible seem almost routine.
Both players were keen to talk up their opponent’s chances after their semi-finals. Nadal said “David is a great player, he’s the world no 5 and he’s a tough rival who is having a very good clay court season so far. He’s playing well and I’m going to have to be very focused to win” but everyone knows that on clay Rafa is the huge favourite.
Ferrer hasn’t beaten him on the dirt since their first ever match in Stuttgart 4 years ago. His two other successes against Nadal have both come on hard-courts. Nadal leads 5-3 on head-to-heads with 4 wins on clay, the last of which came in the Monte Carlo quarters a week ago. Nadal romped to the first set 6-1 but Ferrer fought back hard and was a double break up in the second before being gradually worn down and losing it 7-5.
Prediction: Nadal to enter the Barcelona history books in straight sets
