Agustin Calleri is the most accomplished clay court player taking place in this event this year. However, James Blake will not simply hand the victory over to him. Calleri will have to earn it.
Calleri has reached the quarterfinals of both Buenos Aires and Acapulco back in February this year. He beat Juan Monaco in Buenos Aires, a great win over a fellow Argentine. James is not a clay courter. This is an easy conclusion to draw based on his past results. That is not to say that Calleri will simply romp through this match and win it with his eyes closed.
Blake hasn't played as well as he can this week, but he has done what he needed to do to get to where he is now. He scored a nice revenge win over Nishikori and then sent Ryan Harrison back to ITF events. Calleri has looked good with solid playing in his two wins this week over Spadea and Capdeville, but again, it was against Spadea and Capdeville.
Calleri will look to use his superior patience on the clay surface to outgrind Blake. James will try to go for winners too quickly in the rallies, especially off his forehand wing. Another thing Calleri has is a good second serve, something that Nishikori and Harrison do not possess. Calleri is a much more experienced clay courter and should win this match, but Blake can possibly score the upset with an impressive performance and a shaky Calleri.
