Marc Gicquel and Nikolay Davydenko meet for the second time in 2008. They are fighting for a spot in the semifinals.
France's Marc Gicquel faces a steep uphill battle if he wants to defeat an in-form Nikolay Davydenko. Gicquel has not had the best results this year. Prior to Estoril, his best result was a tournament win - on the Challenger tour. Other than that it has been all first and second round losses. The one exception is that he made the third round of the Australian Open - where he lost to none other than Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 2-6, 3-6.
Russian Nikolay Davydenko has had a fabulous 2008. He won his very first Masters-Series shield just two weeks ago in Miami, where he soundly beat Rafael Nadal in the final. His Australian Open was a bit disappointing; he lost to Mikhail Youzhny in the round of 16. But his match record is an impressive 22-5, including his two victories in Estoril. He has beaten Jjurgen Melzer easily and Ivo Minar with a bit more difficulty on his path to the quarters.
Gicquel and Davydenko have not only met at the Australian Open. They also met on the hard courts of Rotterdam in 2007, a match also won by Davydenko in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. It would be a shock indeed if Gicquel were able to beat Davydenko when he is in the form of his life. Davydenko in straight sets.

Did you know that... Arnaud Clement and Fabrice Santoro fought during 6 hours and 33 minutes in the longest match ever played, in French Open 2004.
