  • Indian Wells Final Preview: Novak Djokovic vs. Mardy Fish

    3/23/08 3:19 AM | Cheryl Murray
     - Serbian star Novak Djokovic is in his second consecutive Pacific Life Open - he lost in last year's final to Rafael Nadal. His opponent is easily the shock of the tournament.

American Mardy Fish, currently ranked 98 in the world, plowed his way through the top half of the draw on the strength of a booming serve and screaming ground strokes.

Djokovic has not lost a set in the tournament. He was particularly impressive in his semifinal match against Rafael Nadal. He won 6-3, 6-2 and was broken just once by the tough Spaniard. The new Serbian super star has already won the Australian Open this year and is considered by many to be the best hard court player in the world right now.

Mardy Fish is having a dream tournament. Nobody could have predicted when this tournament started that an American player ranked just inside the top 100 would beat Nikolay Davydenko, Lleyton Hewitt, David Nalbandian, and Roger Federer on his way. And not only did he beat Roger Federer, he did so quite easily with a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline. This will be his second Master-Series final. The first was in Cincinatti 2003 where he had match points against Andy Roddick but lost 6-4, 6-7, 6-7.

Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish have only met once, at the US Open in 2006. The Serb won that encounter in four tight sets, but neither player is in the same place in their game as they were then. Djokovic has the obvious advantage in terms of current form and big match experience, but Fish is riding the wave of improbable success. Beating Roger Federer in such sound fashion will give the American endless bounds of confidence.
