David Nalbandian fights his way into his first final of 2008. He will take on fellow Argentine Jose Acasuso for the Copa Telmex title
Which David Nalbandian is going to show up? This question looms every time the Argentine takes the court. Genius Nalbandian can beat anybody. He pummels his opponents with vicious ground strokes and dismantles them with his brilliant backhand. The other Nalbandian can easily lose to a player ranked forty spots below him in straight sets.
Jose Acasuso, ranked number 51, is enjoying his first great result of the season; of the seven tournaments he has played so far in 2008, he has lost in the first round four times. He has already had a solid win over Carlos Moya at the Copa Telmex and will come into his hometown final with confidence. His chances of winning the title will depend totally on which Nalbandian he plays.
For much of the tournament, Nalbandian struggled to win his matches. Both Fabio Fognini and Potito Starace took him to three sets, and Starace was close to knocking him out of the tournament. His semifinal match was a different story. He steamrolled Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1 6-2. Acasuso will certainly be hoping that Nalbandian does not bring similar form into the final... otherwise the match will be over in a hurry. Nalbandian in 2.
