  • San Jose Semifinal Preview: Radek Stepanek vs. Robby Ginepri

    2/23/08 5:57 PM | Jonathan Morgan
     - Ginepri has looked in fine form this week and last as he is making a bit of a mini-comeback to the tour. He annihilated Blake in the previous round and looks to continue his roll. Stepanek, on the other hand, has snuck his way under the radar into the semis and has a great shot at the title.

In his 3 matches thus far in San Jose, Stepanek has followed an interesting pattern. All wins in straight sets, but with one tiebreak in each win. Ginepri, meanwhile, had a tough 3 set first round match against Jesse Witten in the first round. Since then, he has destroyed Kristof Vliegen and James Blake in two extremely well played matches by Ginepri. Ergo, this match should be great.

These two have played twice before, once in 2003 in Cincinnati with Ginepri winning in 3, and a tough 4 set match at Wimbledon in 2005. Not much to be drawn from the above encounters. Both player's serves have been impressive, each player only being broken a grand total of once in the past 2 matches. This match will come down to who can hold their nerve in the crucial situations, namely, tiebreaks. With the quality of both their games this week, tiebreaks most likely will come into play. Whoever it is that can take those will win.

With all that being said, Stepanek has got to have to edge here. His big serve should win him many cheap points and his volleys can clean up what needs to be cleaned up. Ginepri will have the edge from the baseline. This is quite an even match up, but Stepanek should take it.
