Both players had tough quarterfinal matches to get through, in fact, all the matches these players have had thus far this week have been tough.
Roddick has looked vulnerable here in his first tournament since the Australian Open. He has had some spats in his last 2 matches against Nishikori and Fish, and just barely pulled out a win against Guccione in his first round match. Roddick's serve has looked impressive as always, but it is the rest of his game that is suspect.
Garcia-Lopez has been serving extremely well this week and has played well on hard courts thus far this year, getting some good wins and become a bit of a force. In the previous round against Isner, and in the first round against Melzer, he had the mental strength to save match points before pulling out the victory. GGL does have a shot at this match.
Roddick will look to dominate with serve and forehand while GGL will look to do the same. Baseline control is crucial. Whoever is pushed further back in the rallies will lose. Roddick might resort to questionable (but perfectly within the rules) tactics to pump himself up and get his opponent out of rhythm. These two played here in San Jose back in 2006, their only career meeting, with Roddick winning 6-3, 6-4. However, GGL did outace Roddick and break the American's serve once. While GGL does have a chance of winning this, I do believe Roddick will pull through.
