Amazingly, of the five times these two Argentines met, only one match has been on clay, which Chela won. It took place so long ago (2001) that it serves little use in predicting the outcome of this semifinal.
The rest have been played on hardcourts, where Nalbandian leads the head to head 3-1.
A better predictor for this semifinal will be the amount of time each player has spent on court. Nalbandian has had two tough three set matches in a row, each lasting more than two hours and thiry minutes. In comparison, Chela’s quarterfinal match against Nicolas Almagro ended when Almagro retired early in the second set. Chela spent just over an hour on court.
Chela is enjoying his best result of the season in Buenos Aires. Even with fresh legs, Nalbandian may have had trouble with his countryman. Tired as he must be, the edge certainly goes to Chela. Chela in 3 sets.
