Buenos Aires - Filippo Volandri of Italy has breezed into the Cope Telmex semifinals with straight set victories over Nicolas Massu in the first round, then Sergio Roitman and Agustin Calleri in the quarterfinals.
On Saturday though, he will run into Buenos Aires’ own Jose Acasuso. Acasuso holds a 5-0 career edge over Volandri, and has beaten him as recently as 2007 on the clay courts of Hamburg, Germany.
Acasuso played the more difficult quarterfinal match; he needed three sets to take out number six seed, Russian Igor Andreev. His other wins were easy two set affairs and his legs should be plenty fresh enough to take on Volandri. Both men have had quarterfinal results on clay already this season, Acasuso in Vina del Mar and Volandri in Costa Do Sauipe.
Expect Acasuso to pounce every time Volandri is forced to hit a second serve. Volandri has had a high first serve percentage for the tournament and he will need to continue to serve well to have a chance at surviving Acasuso’s return game. Acasuso in 3 tough sets.
