Calleri had an impressive win over the number 2 seed Juan Monaco 6-4,2-6,6-3 in the first round. There was speculation that Monaco had not healed completely from an ankle injury he sustained in Vina del Mar less than three weeks ago. Irrespective of the circumstances of the win, Calleri will certainly draw much needed confidence from it.
These two players have met 7 times in their careers and already twice this year. Calleri has the slight edge at 4-3, but Horna won their last meeting in the first round in Vina del Mar. They also met at the Australian Open in January, which Calleri won. They appear to have a difficult time playing each other; perhaps owing to the fact that they are doubles partners and know each other’s games well.
Calleri is the more match tough of the two players. He has played in 6 tournaments already this year, compared to Horna’s 2. He is also in better form, though neither man has had spectacular results thus far this season. A particular blow to Horna was his first round loss in Vina del Mar. He was the defending champion. Calleri should be able to win this match, though with some difficulty. Calleri in 3.
