  • Vina del Mar heats up as Juan Monaco fights for a spot in the semi-finals.

    - We are through to the quarterfinals in Chile and Juan Monaco is the favourite to advance to the semis in his match. In the another match the surprise Fognini will play his first quarterfinal on ATP-level.

    Juan Monaco vs. Juan Pablo Brzezicki

    Argentines Juan Monaco and Juan Pablo Brzezicki have met twice before, though not in an ATP level event. Monaco leads the head-to-head 2-0, but Brzezicki has taken him to three tough sets both times. I'd expect a similar result for this match. Juan Monaco has looked somewhat uncomfortable during this tournament. When asked about his form, he indicated that he was having some difficulty adjusting to clay after playing on hard courts for so many months. Watch for Brzezicki to pressure Monaco and perhaps even take a set. In the end, though, Monaco should be able to find a way to win. Monaco in three.


    Santiago Ventura vs. Fabio Fognini

    Spaniard Santiago Ventura will take on Fabio Fognini for a spot in the semifinals. The two men met in the Montevideo Challengers event last year. Ventura won quite easily 6-0, 6-2. Fognini is making his very first ATP tour quarterfinal, and it is possible that nerves could be a contributing factor in the outcome of the match. Though Ventura had some difficulty closing out his match against Sergio Roitman, I think he will have plenty of confidence against Fognini. Ventura in 3.
