  • Janowicz ousts Almagro, into Wimbledon fourth round

    6/28/13 11:18 PM | Ricky Dimon
Janowicz ousts Almagro, into Wimbledon fourth round Jerzy Janowicz downs Nicolas Almagro in straight sets on Friday at Wimbledon. Janowicz is through to a fourth-round meeting with Jurgen Melzer.

Jerzy Janowicz avenged a third-round Australian Open loss by beating Nicolas Almagro 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-4 at the same stage of Wimbledon on Friday afternoon. Janowicz blasted 30 aces in just one hour and 47 minutes to book his spot in the second week.

The 22nd-ranked Pole battled back from a break down early in the first set to ultimately force a tiebreaker. With Almagro serving at 6-6, Janowicz came up with a winning volley at the end of a brilliant rally. He closed it out on serve one point later with a forehand winner.

Almagro was mostly overpowered the rest of the way. He struck only four winners to his opponent's 17 in the second set and one donation of serve was one too many. Janowicz served out the second at 5-3 and the third at 5-4 to clinch victory. The All-England Club's No. 24 seed converted match point with his 30th ace after losing a total of nine service points combined in sets two and three.

"The delayed start affected me a little bit," Janowicz admitted, referring to a rain delay at the beginning of the day. "I got broken early in the first set. I was a little bit nervous, but luckily I came back."

Next up for him is Jurgen Melzer, who capitalized on Roger Federer's exit and took care of Sergiy Stakhovsky in four sets. Almagro, meanwhile, wrapped up his effort with 32 winners and 18 unforced errors while recording 18 aces and three double-faults.
