  • Brown upsets Hewitt, Darcis also out of Wimbledon

    6/26/13 11:21 PM | Ricky Dimon
Brown upsets Hewitt, Darcis also out of Wimbledon Lleyton Hewitt and Steve Darcis are out of Wimbledon two days after pulling off huge victories. Dustin Brown surprises Hewitt during second-round action on Wednesday while Darcis withdraws due to a shoulder injury.

Qualifier Dustin Brown continued his breakout performance at Wimbledon with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2 second-round victory over Lleyton Hewitt on Wednesday afternoon. Brown fired 21 aces, 74 winners, and he won 48 points at the net to advance in two hours and 26 minutes.

Coming off an upset of Stanislas Wawrinka, Hewitt struggled with Brown's aggressive style. The 32-year-old Australian dropped serve at 4-5 in both the first and the second sets to fall into a serious hole. Hewitt committed a mere eight unforced errors in the first two frames of play combined and he still found himself trailing 2-0 to an on-fire opponent.

Brown did well to battle back from a break down early in the second and he also had to recover from losing the third set in a tiebreaker. The Jamaican-turned-German had led 3-1 in the 'breaker only to lose six consecutive points and throw away the set. Hewitt, though, could not sustain his momentum. Brown seized consecutive service breaks at 1-1 and 3-1 in the fourth to regain complete control. The world No. 189 soon served out the match in 5-1 in convincing fashion.

Joining Brown in the last 32 is unseeded Lukasz Kubot, who got a walkover from Steve Darcis. Less than 48 hours after the win of his life over Rafael Nadal, Darcis withdrew due to a shoulder injury.
