  • Federer shrugs off pre-Wimbledon pressure

    6/19/13 3:55 AM | Johan Lindahl
Federer shrugs off pre-Wimbledon pressure As expected, Roger Federer has quietly made his way back into the Wimbledon title discussion, nudging in among his rivals to join the list of strong potential winners when the grass court grand slam begins next Monday.

After picking up his sixth trophy on the grass of Halle, the Swiss is straight back in the mix of favourites.

For Federer, who charts his own course in the ATP and likes to keep an eye on the big career picture, his "return" is nothing special. And he's so used to the pre-Wimbledon pressure and hype that he's become a
master at brushing it off and getting on with his job on court.

"(The pressure) has no impact,"said the 31-year-old bidding for an eighth trophy at the All England club, "Like in other years, they said Djokovic was going to win the four grand slams in a row (2011), that
Rafa was a favorite to win the tournament. Then he says it's not true. It's always the same thing every year."

The winner of a record 17 grand slam singles titles said he couldn't care less about the inevitable predictions. "Am I a favorite or not? I don't care, because it doesn't give me any more opportunities to win
the tournament. You want to remain focused, calm, focused on what you want to do, and then let the storm go by.

"Of course there is more pressure when I arrive in Wimbledon and I have to defend 2,000 points. This is not the case here. I have fewer points to defend. With tennis, you never know what's going to happen.
You need to play every single match, and that's what makes it interesting."

he's always one of the favourites to win Wimbledon, used to be the only favourite. It'll be a long, long time until someone can surpass what Fed has done at Wimby, if ever.

Or Sampras.

Conspirator , 6/19/13 2:45 PM

yep, or Sampras

Shireling , 6/19/13 3:22 PM

If Sampras were active now he would be call the King of grass, since 50 % of his GS came on that surface

Shireling , 6/19/13 3:24 PM

It could be a long time, too, before the top four players - all of whom are capable of beating each other - will remain constant for so many years.

I don't see Ferrer beating Fed, Rafa or Djoko... maybe Muzza on clay

Shireling , 6/19/13 3:50 PM

Shirling: Should've qualified I was referring to the USUAL top 4 not the current top 4

rafaisthebest , 6/19/13 6:37 PM

Spawned what ritb?

Conspirator , 6/19/13 7:56 PM

Conspirator: Will you go over to Federer Finding Top Form and explain to 'rogerthat' the correct use of hashtags as practised on TT.

ed251137 , 6/19/13 8:51 PM

Hashtags, @Conspirator, hashtags. As ed251137, now you have to go to the dark side and explain to them how to use them...........

rafaisthebest , 6/19/13 9:16 PM

Explain to who ritb and why?

Conspirator , 6/19/13 9:22 PM

To @seventeen, Conspirator! Look at her post of 6:05 PM and others on other threads, she is now a hashtag fiend, no doubt "learned" from you!

rafaisthebest , 6/19/13 9:28 PM

Ahhh, that explains my confusion ritb. I don't read twenty's posts. Are they any more respectful recently? I'm thinking no.

She needs some help from you Conspirator. She has not grasped the difference between # and * or ?

ed251137 , 6/19/13 10:46 PM

I typed a bullet point which TT has changed to ?

ed251137 , 6/19/13 10:48 PM

"some" help from me? No I don't think that would be enough for twenty and her ilk.

She really does need some help though. A regular psychiatrist couldn't even help her. She needs to go to like Vienna or something. You know what I mean? She needs to get involved at the University level. Like where Freud studied and have all those people looking at her and checking up on her. That's the kind of help she needs. Not the once a week for eighty bucks. No. She needs a team. A team of psychiatrists working round the clock thinking about her, having conferences, observing her, like the way they did with the Elephant Man. That's what I'm talking about because that's the only way she's going to get better.

I think she might have already have undergone Primal therapy. Unfortunately TT is now on the receiving end of her repressed childhood traumas.

Conspirator, 6/19/13 10:58 PM,

Well said! Some people are really beyond any kind of help.

Nativenewyorker , 6/20/13 2:12 AM

new-yapper @ 212

ironical that you are saying that. thank you for the laughs. Always ready to pass judgements as if you proved to us that you are capable of getting through a psych evaluation without listing out all your disorders. i am postitive you have atleast 8 or 9 of the top 10 psychiatric disorders, if not all 10. Hey, if you volunteer for research, I know a lab that will pay you good bucks dear. let me know if you are open to it.

Fedkovic23 , 6/21/13 12:14 AM

^^^^^

You ought to know! It takes one to know one! LOL!

Nativenewyorker , 6/21/13 12:52 AM

Imo there's never been less pressure on roger at wimbie since before he started winning slams. Real pressure was when everyone expected him to win it no matter what. Now the pressure pretty much matches his status as an outside favourite.

alex , 6/21/13 1:11 AM

DEATH TO FEDTARDS!

Twinge , 6/21/13 2:14 AM

alex, 6/21/13 1:11 AM,

I don't know if that is entirely the case. Fed is the defending champion with 2000 points at stake. That does put some pressure on him, unless he doesn't care about going down in the rankings. I think with his record at Wimbledon there will always be pressure. It's just that now he isn't going to be the obvious favorite.

Nativenewyorker , 6/21/13 4:15 AM

Also, Fed cannot be happy with Rafa standing as the only man to have won a major 8 times. Everyone knows Fed thinks every record should be his. He will go hell for leather to deny Rafa the accolade of being the only one with 8. He knows his GOAT-hood is on the line.
