  • Malisse upsets Ferrer, Wawrinka wins in 's-Hertogenbosch

Malisse upsets Ferrer, Wawrinka wins in 's-Hertogenbosch No. 1 seed David Ferrer goes down to Xavier Malisse in straight sets on Tuesday in 's-Hertogenbosch. Malisse is joined in the second round by Stanislas Wawrinka, who ousted lucky loser Steve Darcis.

    Xavier Malisse d. (1) David Ferrer 7-6(3), 6-3

Malisse saved all four of the break points he faced to hold all 11 of his service games as he upset Ferrer in one hour and 28 minutes during first-round action at the Topshelf Open on Tuesday afternoon. A competitive opening set saw the two players combine to fight off four break points (Ferrer saved three, Malisse saved one) on the way to a tiebreaker. The 32-year-old Belgian took control of the match by taking it seven points to three.

The lone break of the day came at 4-3 in the second and, not surprisingly, it proved to be decisive. Malisse seized it then served out the proceedings in the ninth game of the frame. The world No. 60 finished with 10 aces and just one double-fault en route to a second-round date with Yen-Hsun Lu. Ferrer, the French Open runner-up and defending champ of this event, wrapped up his effort with five aces and two doubles.

    (2) Stanislas Wawrinka d. (LL) Steve Darcis 7-6(5), 6-4

Wawrinka had been scheduled to face Igor Sijsling, but the Dutchman withdrew due to illness. Darcis, who lost to Stephane Bohli in the final round of qualifying, stepped in and accounted himself well against the second seed but did not have enough to pull off the surprise. Wawrinka held 10 of 11 service games while firing 10 aces as he prevailed in one hour and 31 minutes.

Not unlike Malisse, Wawrinka survived the opener in a tiebreaker then earned a late break in the second to all but clinch victory. The world No. 10's second scalp of the Darcis serve came at 4-4 in the second and he served it out one game later. Next up for Wawrinka is Paolo Lorenzi, who dismissed Thiemo De Bakker on Monday.
