  • Isner, Baghdatis bomb out of 's-Hertogenbosch

    6/18/13 6:46 AM | Ricky Dimon
Isner, Baghdatis bomb out of 's-Hertogenbosch Evgeny Donskoy takes out John Isner in straight sets on Monday at the Topshelf Open. Donskoy is joined in the second round by Carlos Berlocq, a routine winner over a slumping Marcos Baghdatis.

    Evgeny Donskoy d. (3) John Isner 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4

Isner fired 18 aces and one double-fault but he was once again hopeless in the return department as the American lost his Topshelf Open first-rounder to Donskoy in one hour and 31 minutes on Monday afternoon. A competitive opening set saw neither man face a break point before Isner cruised through the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to three.

From there, however, it was mostly all Donskoy. The unseeded Russian lost a mere nine points in his last 10 service games spanning the second and third sets. One break in each frame was easily enough for Donskoy to pull off the upset victory. Next up for the world No. 73 is Robin Haase.

    Carlos Berlocq d. (6) Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-4

Baghdatis lost his opening match of a 10th consecutive tournament when he succumbed to Berlocq during first-round action on Monday in 's-Hertogenbosch. Even on grass, a surface that should favor him in this matchup, Baghdatis was dreadful. The Cypriot served at a horrendous 49 percent, double-faulted seven times, and won only 38 percent of his second-serve points.

Berlocq did not face a break point the entire way while dropping just 12 points in nine service games. The Argentine put in 76 percent of his first deliveries en route to a second-round showdown against Roberto Bautista Agut.
