• Federer looks for Halle title against Youzhny

    6/16/13 4:55 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer looks for Halle title against Youzhny Roger Federer is looking for his first title since his run to the title at the 2012 Cincinnati Masters. He'll take on familiar foe Mikhail Youzhny for the Halle title.

Mikhail Youzhny has been a flawless match-up for Roger Federer. The two men have met 14 times in their careers -- Youzhny has never won a single match against the Swiss man. In fact, Federer has only dropped 3 sets total to the Russian since their first match in 2000.

Youzhny has played well this week, with upset wins over 3 consecutive seeds to make his way to the final. But Federer will have the confidence of his 14 straight wins and a mostly easy road to the finals that included a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mischa Zverev.

The Russian's power off the baseline doesn't seem to put so much as a dent in Federer's game...and Youzhny's return game usually comes up short against the Federer serve.

Prediction - Federer in straight sets.

Common Roger

sabs , 6/16/13 2:37 PM

Common Roger, go get that first one for 2013!

Roger now has to have Rafans cheering for him because now that he is going downhill, all his shallow fans have jumped Nole's bandwagon and totally abandoned him. Poor Fed. Even I'm feeling sorry for him now.

jean , 6/16/13 2:41 PM

Allez Fed!!!

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 2:44 PM

Probably his #6th title at Halle, only a 250 event and has no value at all compare to Rafa's triplicate 8-feat at Montecarlo, Barcelona and Roland Garros.

Viva Rafa !!!

Raindrops , 6/16/13 2:46 PM

Where are the fedfarts? They will come out only when they see the score is in favor of Roger but right now, they are too scared to even make a post as the score is still equal. The fedfarts are cowards.

Raindrops , 6/16/13 2:52 PM

Fed's forehand has to be a concern for him going into Wimby, leaking too many errors off it.......

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 2:53 PM

Roger can't seem to win a rally from the baseline to save his life these days.

xrf , 6/16/13 2:53 PM

Am I impressed so far? No.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 2:59 PM

Well not quite the Sunday afternoon stroll Roger was hoping for! But he can pretty much relied upon Youzhny to choke. Sooner probably than later.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:00 PM

Wheww missed opportunities by Youz to close set 1.

6-6 tie breaker.

Vamos Youzhny !!!

Raindrops , 6/16/13 3:00 PM

Youzni is playing really well, but Fed finds his rhythm too. A real test today!

textor , 6/16/13 3:01 PM

Fed really wants this, rarely see him this animated.......

Vamos Fed!

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:03 PM

A test for whom Textor?

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:04 PM

Expectation for wimby is further reduced now to QF:-( Roger definitely not in ominous form.

Hope things will change once he is at center court.

sabs , 6/16/13 3:05 PM

Of course he wanted (win) this one so bad because he has yet to win any tournament for 2013 so far.

Raindrops , 6/16/13 3:06 PM

C'mon Fed, don't blow this okay?

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:08 PM

Federer will crank up several gears for the 2nd set whereas Youshny is already playing at his highest level.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:10 PM

Youz - 1st set

sabs , 6/16/13 3:12 PM

But ed251137, this was an opportunity for Fed to send a message for Wimby. Now if you're Rafa sitting in Mallorca seeing this, wouldn't you be underwhelmed?

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:15 PM

Rog, not practicing the hot dog these days I see.

xrf , 6/16/13 3:15 PM

I went out 5-4 tiebreaker and now Youzhny won the first set??? REALLY???

Vamos more set, ONE MORE SET.....woooohooooo !!!!

Raindrops , 6/16/13 3:17 PM

This Fed would not trouble any of the Top 10 guys, never mind the Top 4..........

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:18 PM

textor , 6/16/13 3:18 PM

I am happy now, very very happy !!!

Raindrops , 6/16/13 3:18 PM

If Fed loses this, it will be because this grass court tournament wasn't important lol.

jean , 6/16/13 3:21 PM

LOL jean. I thought he's waiting for this season to come?

Foxholes are ready for fedfarts in case retreat is needed LOL.

Raindrops , 6/16/13 3:26 PM

Now Youzhny is contriving to lose the 2nd set, and the match.....

Allez Fed!

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:30 PM

ritb: It's the UEs which are the give away!

I can think of quite a few players who'll be taking note. He will get the win today, of that I'm sure, but only because Youzhny doesn't believe in himself quite enough.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:32 PM

Good hold Youzhny...break him here ... BREAK him!

Vamos Youz !!!

Raindrops , 6/16/13 3:33 PM

WHEWW...Roger holds quite easily.

Stay focused Youzhny, you can do it.

Raindrops , 6/16/13 3:35 PM

Youzi starting to unravel.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:37 PM

People are going to be focused on a potential early round upset for Rafa but I think they will be better off looking elsewhere.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:38 PM

break now

sabs , 6/16/13 3:38 PM

1 set each...xD Cmon Roger

Fedzz22 , 6/16/13 3:41 PM

Oh good, some Fedfans have arrived to see Rogie take the third set.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:43 PM

Look at Fed's thighs, they are puny compared to Rafa's or Berdych's............

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:46 PM

Common Roger, thrash him now.

sabs , 6/16/13 3:47 PM

In 14 meetings Youzhny has only ever taken two sets off Federer before. Once in 2000 and the 2nd in 2003.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:48 PM

Please tennis Gods, can you put Rafa in Fed's quarter?

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:49 PM

Correction: There was a third occasion at Wimbledon 2011.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:51 PM

ohh roger won the 2nd set quickly. let's see what will happen at the deciding set.

Raindrops , 6/16/13 3:54 PM

rafaisthebest, 6/16/13 3:46 PM,

True, but more human.

sabs , 6/16/13 3:54 PM

ritb: Even more amazing is the slightness of the upper arms. They are even more puny in real life than they appear on TV.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 3:57 PM

Hahaha, @sabs! What r u saying, that Rafa and Berdy r cyborgs?

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 3:57 PM

Tbh, I think Fed's puniness is the reason he is falling off quickly performance wise compared to other players in ther thirties. I mean look at Ferru, he is improving and is still just as quick.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:01 PM

Curtains for Youzhny........

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:02 PM

But Berdych and Nadal have massive thighs. Especially Berdych. At the AO, Courier labelled him "quadzilla". Anyway, Federer has a pretty muscular upper body, even though his arms are skinny. He is definitely bigger than you would think he is.

tj600 , 6/16/13 4:05 PM

Chapeau Mikhail for at least making a match of this.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 4:05 PM

Yeah, Berdy has amazing legs.....

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:06 PM

Consolidate now

sabs , 6/16/13 4:07 PM

Federer is playing ok. Not as bad as in previous weeks but not great either.

tj600 , 6/16/13 4:08 PM

Too late, Fed will serve it out.......

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:09 PM

Roberto carlos - Former Brazilian soccer player had elephant like thighs.
Never seen anyone like that in any of the sports.

sabs , 6/16/13 4:10 PM

@tj600, what's worrying about Fed's performance is he never subdued Youzhny mentally, that is bad. It means players are no longer intimidated by him.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:11 PM

First of the many titles in 2013, common Roger!

sabs , 6/16/13 4:14 PM

GSM, Fed. Congratulations Fed and his good fans! Not the best but a title nevertheless, needed this.

Well done.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:14 PM

Honest assessment Fedfans, what's your feeling for Fed going into Wimby?

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:17 PM

Definitely SF is possible, then God mode is required to clinch #18.
Hoping for the God mode.

sabs , 6/16/13 4:21 PM

Fedrer will surely Go deep in wimby....rafaisthebest

Fedzz22 , 6/16/13 4:21 PM

Well, if he brings the passion he showed today he will be a contender.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:31 PM

The drought is over finally. The twins are adorable. At least he was able to limit the unforced errors in the last 2 sets. Plus very nice that the rain has held off the final until after Fed played so the Tennis Channel can show that live and without a split screen.

chr18 , 6/16/13 4:33 PM

London final I meant of course.

chr18 , 6/16/13 4:34 PM

The 10 month drought is ovr.. Good for Fed and his fans..Congrats!!!

Surprising there was not single rticle lamenting his drought..When Rafa went on a 9 month drought..obituaries were written big time

I saw only bits of the match, Fed was just about okay I thought. Surprisng he isnt sharp on grass too this year

And Yes the twins are angels and always color co-ordinated and look so cute :-)

sanju , 6/16/13 4:49 PM

@sanju, even now, after so may titles people are saying well, most of the titles are on clay, his favorite surface. Well, this is Fed's first title this year and it's on his favorite surface. I bet you will not hear anyone playing it down like they do Rafa's.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 4:55 PM

I am happy RITB that they keep trying to put him down, when he will rise like a phoenix and shut their mouths, it will be the sweetest sound of music

sanju , 6/16/13 5:06 PM

Federer's prospects at Wimby depends on where Rafa is drawn. If he runs into Rafa in the Qtrs or SF, it's goodbye Roger.

rafaeli1 , 6/16/13 5:10 PM

Murray had a nasty groin jerk fall there. Hope it's nothing to worry about.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 5:17 PM

Federer's prospects at Wimby depends on where Rafa is drawn. If he runs into Rafa in the Qtrs or SF, it's goodbye Roger.
, 6/16/13 5:10 PM

I have a strong feeling Fed n Murray wont be put in same half by Wimby , so Rafa, Murray, Ferrer in 1 side and Djoko/Fed n other

sanju , 6/16/13 5:17 PM

Its a shame that the grass season is so short. Am enjoying the queens final atm and also enjoyed the Halle final.

tj600 , 6/16/13 5:20 PM

Cilic wins the 1st set 7-5. Sloppy stuff from Muzz.

tj600 , 6/16/13 5:31 PM

Crap20 came out of its hole only after Fed won lol.

jean , 6/16/13 5:36 PM

Oh Halle and Queens are just 250 pts? I was under impression they were 500

sanju , 6/16/13 5:56 PM

Attaboy Rog!
It's the forehand that worries me. It's either out by miles, or not aggressive enough.

xrf , 6/16/13 6:12 PM

, 6/16/13 6:12 PM

It has lost its zing. Infact I think his BH makes lesser errors these days than FH

sanju , 6/16/13 6:13 PM

Yeah. Especially that off-forehand, it seems it's got absolutely nothing on it. But his backhand was just as bad today. I can understand maybe trying to take it early can be hard if your timing is off, especially on grass, but still!

xrf , 6/16/13 6:20 PM

Never been a Federer fan but it's still a bit shocking to learn this is his first title of 2013. Still, congrats are in order.

TuesdayChild , 6/16/13 6:29 PM

Well, Fed better pray Rafa is not in his quarter. Without his forehand he is sitting duck.......

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 6:39 PM

RIT..look at thread Rafa rolls to 8th RG title..Fed has said he thinks Rafa should not be aken above 5th in Wimby. GUess he is very sure he wont draw Rafa in qtr

sanju , 6/16/13 6:43 PM

Well @sanju, I have a feeling Rafa will be in Nole's quarter, Murray in Nole's half, Ferru in Fed's half. So that Rafa would need to beat Nole in the quarters, Murray in the semis and Fed in the final to win Wimby. This is what they will do.

rafaisthebest , 6/16/13 6:58 PM

^^^^^^ You mean Fed would would be seeded 2 . Otherwise Murray and Nole can't be in same quarter..

fedexal , 6/16/13 7:08 PM

I meant Nole and Murray in same halg in my last post.

fedexal , 6/16/13 7:10 PM

Murray cannot be in Noles half. Murray will be seeded 2, how can he be in Noles half, not possible at all.

sanju , 6/16/13 7:23 PM

Yes holiday booked for vamosses to celebrate best start of the season ever, 1 slam, 3 Masters and 7 titles. Lot more to come rest of the year

sanju , 6/16/13 7:25 PM

I was really surprised to see that the Halle final went three sets. I really thought that Fed would beat Youzhny easily in straight sets. At least the drought is over and Fed has his first title of the year. Congratulations to the good Fed fans on this site.

It was positively surreal seeing only Rafa fans commenting on a Fed match! What is with his fans? They should be here cheering him on no matter what.

I will have to watch the replay to check out Fed's form. From what I am reading it appears that he wasn't exactly scintillating. I don't think Fed would want to meet Rafa in the quarters or semis in any slam!

Nativenewyorker , 6/16/13 7:56 PM

fedexal, Murray will be seeded 2 so he can't be in the same half as Nole.

nadline , 6/16/13 8:24 PM

Odd. There doesn't appear to be a write-up of the Halle final although it finished way before Queens which has been covered. I would've thought the end of Fed's title drought warranted a news item.

Even more odd was that 'Sabs' was the lone Fedfan supporting her man during the match. No sign of all the fanatical fans which is proof positive they dont actually have enough interest in tennis to actually watch matches. Too busy drafting insults to hurl at fans of the other players I assume. As predicted they come out of the woodwork once the result is known.

ed251137 , 6/16/13 9:42 PM

I was out, congrats to fed and his fans

rafaelo , 6/16/13 9:54 PM

Youzhny has been phenomenal this week, so was not surprised to see him take
Rog to three sets
but yes, too many UE from Rog these days, even on grass, where he used to be untouchable
would love to see him win Wimbledon, but i can't see it, semis at best i reckon

amity , 6/16/13 10:09 PM

Excellent win today from Roger to level McEnroe... Connors' 109 is a bit of a reach but he should be able to catch Lendl with time...

aegis , 6/16/13 10:52 PM

...but time is fast running out don't you think?

phoenix , 6/16/13 11:02 PM

Funny thing is all the Nadal fans are assuming Nadal will make it to the qf after what happened last year. Even funnier to see Raindrops jumping on the Youzhny band wagon. Hope he stays there. At least he is well educated.

chr18 , 6/16/13 11:46 PM

As usual, the criticism continues for Fed fans. when we post during his match, we have to put up with the snide remarks and criticism of Fed's play, and when we don't post we show no interest. We are told we don't know and/or talk tennis.

I wote a post about 10 days ago after the Fed/simon match and why he poses problems for Fed, and the chief grammar expert made her ususal assinine comments that my take on the match is what everyone is aware of, first para, and,. the second paragraph of my comments were dubbed as cut and paste. I refused to dignify her drivel or else I could have asked her from where did I cut and paste and to show me the proof. You people write your garbage only to provoke which is what catty women like to do. gossip and meouw.

The rafabots don't have anything worthwhile to say about Fed's matchplay, only thei usual cattiness being voiced/regurgitated over and over, and bring out their fountain of criticisms for Fed calling him mr. shankalot, etc.. That said, can anyone tell me why we, Fed fans, would want to post about his matches and share our comments with you lot? BTW, the same was said during the FO, the Fed fans nor the so-called hybrid Fed/Djoker fans were no where to be seen. You guys continuously pour out criticisms while shooting yourselves in the foot. You can't have it both ways, but it's the kind of stuff that rocks your world, being nasty and picking on everything.

It's not that you care whether Fed fans post during any of his matches, it's just your usual propensity for criticism/gossip that leads you all to be so nasty. enjoy your gossip.

Fed won and that's what his fans care about. Your comments says it all, your jealousy is killing you. Poor thing they will always be stuk in the mire..

scoretracker , 6/16/13 11:53 PM

Fed fans have gotten accustomed to the fact that he will win some and lose some. His records will stand strong. however, the rafabots still have to worry about him catching up to Fed. I hope there won't be the usual wailing and gnashing of teeth should the idol fall at wimbles before the final. something for the nadabots to think about.

scoretracker , 6/16/13 11:58 PM

No chr18, Rafans assume nothing about Rafa's performance at Wimby. One match at a time, that is our take and that is Rafa's take. It's you who assumes things. According to you, Fed tanks matches to conserve energy for Slams, that he does not care for Masters tournaments, only Slams. Well, you could have fooled me yesterday, boy did he care for a 250 tournament! He screamed after he won, you would think he had won a Slam or beaten Rafa!

We have reason to assume Rafa will make the quarters after his impressive wins to date. Of course Fed will make the quarters, after beating 2 qualifiers and a geriatric on the way.

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 7:09 AM

Fed has said he thinks Rafa should not be aken above 5th in Wimby. GUess he is very sure he wont draw Rafa in qtr

sanju , 6/16/13 6:43 PM

Remember, Fed is not the sharpest tool in the shed. If he does not win Wimby, he will very well fall down the rankings to #4, it's that close between numbers 3-5. Then in August his Olympics runner-up points fall off, when he could then fall down further to #5 or worse. Let's hear what he will have to say come the USOpen when he will then be seeded #5. Unlike Wimby, USO seeds by the rankings, no discretion.

Instead of opining about Rafa's seeding status, he could do well to remember this: Rafa is ranked #5 because he was out 7 months injured. He, Fed, will be ranked #5 come the USOpen because of sub-par performance overall.

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 7:41 AM

Fed has the pressure of defending 2000 points now as the defending champion. The rankings are very close especially between #3, #4 and #5. I was checking it out and there could be some changes depending on what happens at Wimbledon.

Rafa may have a tougher task being seeded 5th this time, but he is defending virtually nothing.

I forgot about the Olympics points coming off in August. That makes it even worse for Fed.

Nativenewyorker , 6/17/13 8:07 AM

Well, you could have fooled me yesterday, boy did he care for a 250 tournament! He screamed after he won, you would think he had won a Slam or beaten Rafa!
rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 7:09 AM

If you go more than half a year without winning anything, snagging a 250 tournament is like finding an oases in the middle of the sahara.

phoenix , 6/17/13 8:32 AM

...and even this did not come without help from luck or whatever...Haas had to contend with the likes of Gulbis and Monfils while Fed faced what're-their-names-again?

phoenix , 6/17/13 8:38 AM

Oops, chr18 is not going to be happy that you don't know the names of those two stellar opponents that Fed faced earlier in the tournament. Don't you watch tennis or keep up? After all, they are currently ranked something like 156 and 166 right now! LOL!

Nativenewyorker , 6/17/13 8:48 AM

During nole/rafa RG match at 5th set, 4-2 Nole, you were so vocal in your support for Nole to hold for 2 more games and the match will be his. Did anyone say you sound funny ludicrous that time? NO ONE because you want Rafa to lose and that's understood. Now that I did the same thing to your man, it becomes "FUNNY" to you. Moron you are chr18 better shut your big fuccing big mouth along with seventeen as she did exactly the same thing during early rounds of Rafa at RG.

Raindrops , 6/17/13 9:18 AM

I just want to say that if any Fed fan is going to argue that Rafa fans are driving them away or somehow preventing them from coming on the live blogs to cheer for their guy, then that is quite pathetic.

Rafa fans had to endure the presence of seventeen/sienna's obnoxious, taunting posts when we were cheering for him on the live blog. But you didn't see us running away and hiding! We stayed there and just did our best to ignore this hater. We didn't cut and run.

If Fed fans can't come on here and stand up for their guy even in the face of some comments from Rafa fans, then they really are cowards.

It's beyond laughable when adults try to whine and blame Rafa fans for somehow being such meanies that the poor Fed fans can't even come on a live blog to cheer him.

Nativenewyorker , 6/17/13 10:02 AM

, 6/16/13 11:46 PM

Are you gonan give it in writing that Fed will go past the qtrs too based on what you saw of him all this year which was so sub par and also what you saw of him in 2010 and 2011 Wimby?

Point is no one knows how far anyone will go, however there is no harm in discussing probabilities.

, 6/17/13 9:18 AM

Did you not know Raindrops they are beyond any questioning at all? They can do anything and yet question if anyone else does the same. Yeah they can even write essays on someone elses behaviour which anyways no one cares to read :-)

sanju , 6/17/13 11:07 AM

Sounds you already missed the epic meltdown postings of (pardon me other rafans who can't stomach me) pungent pantyless lunatic queen of fedfarts. Undoubtedly, she knows that it is her I am referring with upon reading "PUNGENT PANTYLESS". That's her TT dogtag.

Raindrops , 6/17/13 11:53 AM

It is utterly ridiculous to me that certain posters keep referring to Rafa's early exit last year at Wimby as some sort of yardstick to measure his prospects this year by. The guy's won this tournament twice before, beating Federer in what is widely considered the best tennis match ever - and his a four time finalist if I'm not mistaken. I'd day Rafa is pretty good on grass. Of course, anything could happen and he could lose early but that could be said about anyone, including the other members of the top four.

It seems disingenious for some to keep pretending that Lukas Rosol was more than just a fluke match and that somehow it means Rafa should be more worried than anyone else about making it into the 2nd week of the tournament.

TuesdayChild , 6/17/13 11:54 AM

I wasn't posting during the RG semifinal. I was watching like I usually do and posting after the match. Perhaps you have mistaken me for somebody else and learn how to spell if you want to curse me out will ya?

chr18 , 6/17/13 12:47 PM

Good to see FED win a title after a long time.
But, yeah, as far as his form is concerned, he is there for taking. If he continues to play like this, then probably his QF streak may end at this Wimby. He looks too shaky at the moment.
It appears to me that he is not playing with that same passion as he was last year or years before that. Probably he can gather the same for the tournament he cares about most the Wimby. I will keep my fingers crossed for him.
#8th Championships title win.

abhirf , 6/17/13 2:36 PM

@rafaisthebest, 6/17/13 7:41 AM
Sorry, but probably you should read or post the complete statement given by Roger. He said that Rafa should not be seeded no.5 because Ferrer has earned his seeding by his hardwork ( sorry I cant post a link, but I did read it on a twitter update after his match). And I dont think it would be a justice to other top 4 as well as one of them is Defending champion, another is a runner up and the last one is current world no.1
So please dont twist or post half statements to suit up your views.
Rafa being no.5 is dangerous for the top 4. They too know it, but they cant do much about it anyways. They are just stating their opinions. It's upto the tournament to decide about it. And I too feel, they should not fiddle with the system too much just to benefit some top players. And doesnt it add much more excitement to the draw as well as tournament. A Qf classic could be on its way.

abhirf , 6/17/13 2:50 PM

"And I too feel, they should not fiddle with the system too much just to benefit some top players..."

You can also tell this to Fed who almost always benefits from too much fiddling of the system.

phoenix , 6/17/13 3:00 PM

abhirf , 6/17/13 2:50 PM

Did you even read my post of 7:41AM or you just saw my name and started steaming out of your ears? Calm down and please read the following slowly:

1. Roger's feeling about Rafa's potential seeding was first posted by @sanju 4:43PM. I referenced @sanju's post in my post and I was responding to this. My post does not include Fed's statement, it only includes @sanju's statement, word for word, so which "half statements" did I post, or twist as you say?

2. After the reference to @sanju's post, I posted MY OPINION. Now, let me educate you: an opinion is what I think. It follows I can interpret, twist, characterise whatever I read as I please. It's MY opinion. You are entitled to your opinion, you are not entitled to tell me how to phrase mine.

3. For your information, I had read about Roger's statement before I read @sanju's, so I knew what I was talking about.

Now that we have that out of the way, let me post Roger's statement on the matter:

Some have called for Wimbledon to adjust its seedings to move Nadal up to the top four, but Federer disagreed, saying the current No. 4, David Ferrer, had earned his seed.

?Ferrer has played rock solid the last 365 days,? Federer said. ?What are you going to say? Rafa hadn?t played that much. That?s how the rankings go. But in probably a month or so, Rafa is going to be the top two ? or three. So he?s going to be patient right now.? rst-title-of-year.html?ref=sports&_r=1&

Before I ridicule Fed's statement (yes, it is ridiculous), let me start by stating that I couldn't care less what seeding the powers that be assign to Rafa. Rafa has recently beaten all, I repeat ALL, the players currently ranked 1-4 withe the exception of Murray, so sorry, but I am not exactly quaking in my boots at the prospect of Rafa playing any of them at Wimby.

With regards to Roger's statement:

1. Correct me if I am wrong but was there not a year when Rafa entered Wimby ranked #1 and Fed #2 but Wimby inverted these and assigned Fed the #1 seed and Rafa #2 seed? Did Fed complain then and say it was not fair to Rafa since he had been "rock solid in the last 365 days" in being ranked #1? Did Rafa not EARN that #1 ranking? So, Ferru's #4 seeding is "rock solid" and Rafa's #1 seeding at the time was not "rock solid"? Had Rafa been given that #1 solid, he did not earn it?

My point is this @abhirf, it was a poor choice of words by Fed. But then again, is this the first time Fed has put his foot in his mouth? No, he has made a career of choosing his words poorly.

We had this "Rafa seeding" drama before the FO and it worked out well without need for interference. I am sure the same will happen at Wimby.

And what I said in my post of 7:41AM stands. Let's wait and see what Fed says pre USO when he will be seeded below the top 4 because I bet you this seeding brouhaha will come again, this time with regard to Fed when he is out of the top 4, which will be very soon.

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 3:25 PM

everybody is talking bout fed and rafa in the quarters but you all forget that wimby seedings are based on the past 5 years perfromances at wimby, the only tournament that does this. Do you really think Ferrer will be ranked no.4 ahead of Rafa...its never going to happen. Dnt think ferrer has even made the semis at wimby

rfnadal23 , 6/17/13 3:29 PM

Seedings will be 1. Djoko 2. Murray 3. Fed 4.Rafa 5. Ferrer/Tsonga.
If you go on the last 5 years Fed might even br ranked no.2 but I doubt it!!!
So Fed and Rafa WILL be no.3 & 4 and can only meet in the final.

rfnadal23 , 6/17/13 3:33 PM

And I too feel, they should not fiddle with the system too much just to benefit some top players.

abhirf , 6/17/13 2:50 PM

So what do you call what Wimby did when they seeded Rafa #2 when he was ranked #1 and seeded Fed #1 when he was ranked #2? That was not fiddling?

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 3:34 PM

Instead of wasting energy talking, Fed should just shut up about Rafa's seeding and concentrate on defending his Wimby title. God knows he will need all the energy he has to do that.

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 3:37 PM

Rafaisthebest, wimby is allowed to do that. Remember like 2 years ago when Venus Williams was injured the whole season leading up to Wimby, and she was ranked outside of the top 50 coming into wimby but based on past performances they wimby gave her the no 24 seed. The year you are talking bout is 2008 when they switched rafa and fed 1 & 2, but u forget that fed won wimby 5 years running and rafa only made 2 finals of note thats why they were switched its not fiddling if u know the facts and rules.

rfnadal23 , 6/17/13 3:42 PM

Prior to 2002 Wimbledon decided on the order of seedings by committee using their own set of criteria. Since then, following an agreement with the ATP, they follow the ATP rankings which are then adjusted by awarding bonus points based on the past two years' performance in grass tournaments.

rfnadal23 , 6/17/13 3:42 PM

Totally agree with you! And thank you for using the Venus Williams example because it makes what Fed is saying and his justification even more ridiculous.

Rafa is ranked #5 currently because he was out injured for 7 months, just as Venus's ranking fell because of a long lay-off due to injury. In her case, Wimby bumped up her seeding based on past performance and they do the same for Rafa if they wish.

Fed is saying they should not do that because Ferru "has earned his #4 ranking, he has been rock solid in the 365 days preceding", which is wholly besides the point of Wimby seeding placements. Like I said, he is best keeping quiet than opining on matters he has no knowledge on.

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 3:50 PM

And btw, I have no issue with the Wimby decision to invert Fed's and Rafa's seeding in 2008. All I am saying is, be consistent. And I do not expect the so-called GOAT to come up with spurious reasons why Rafa should not be bumped up this year. There are many justifiable reasons to not bump Rafa up #4 seed, Fed's is not one of them.

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 3:57 PM

If I was the Wimby Committee I would say, "Okay, the GOAT is against a seeding up-grade for Rafa, we take his views seriously", go ahead and seed Rafa #5 and then put him in Roger's quarter.......

Everybody would be happy, no?

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 4:13 PM

I'm glad I'm not a barrister coming up against you in court. lol.

ed251137 , 6/17/13 4:47 PM

^^^hahaha! I will take that as a compliment, although my opinion of the legal profession is not too different from the one I hold for politicians..............

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 4:55 PM

ritb, they ARE being consistent. Consitently favouring Fed in the seedings/draw.

Rafa will be in Nole's quarter.

Conspirator , 6/17/13 4:57 PM

Conspirator , 6/17/13 4:57 PM

I am inclined to believe you, you have a track record of being right in these issues! In which case, Fed's statement is not so hare-brained after all, he knows that Rafa will not be in his quarter, that is why he wants Rafa seeded #5.

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 5:18 PM

"Dnt think ferrer has even made the semis at wimby"

He did it last year, playing Andy Murray, who made the finals.

My goodness, all this squabbling.

mara002 , 6/17/13 5:28 PM

You call it squabbling, we call it a spirited discussion......

At least we are talking/arguing tennis, which is more than can be said for some "discussions" around here.........

rafaisthebest , 6/17/13 5:34 PM

what are experts picks?

rafaelo , 6/17/13 7:16 PM

RIT..loved this statement of Fed

But in probably a month or so, Rafa is going to be the top two ? or three. So he?s going to be patient right now.?

So hes resigned to the fact that Rafa will be No 2 soon.

Conspirator..I dont think Rafa will be in Noles qtr. I think he will be in Ferrus and will be in Murrays half.

Fed Djoko in same half I think. I think Fed will prefer to face Nole on grass than Murray/Rafa

sanju , 6/17/13 7:25 PM

what are experts picks?
, 6/17/13 7:16 PM

Rafaelo to coach Rafa :-)

sanju , 6/17/13 7:33 PM

^^^ :)))))

rafaelo , 6/17/13 7:58 PM

Wimbledon goes with the WTA ranking but can use their discretion to upgrade players if they see fit. They use the formula for the men and I think they should just stick to that. Rafa wouldn't want it any other way, he would not want Ferrer to be downgraded because if him.

Rafa won IW seeded 5, and all of the top 4 were there. I'm sure he will want to win every match as will the others no matter what round it is or which seeding is attached to them. Rafa is after all the Year to Date #1.

#bring it on

nadline , 6/17/13 8:07 PM
