  • Federer overcomes Haas in Halle semifinals

    6/15/13 9:38 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer overcomes Haas in Halle semifinals Roger Federer recovers from a set deficit to beat Tommy Haas on Saturday in Halle. Next up for Federer is the title match against Mikhail Youzhny.

Roger Federer scored a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over doubles partner Tommy Haas in the semifinals of the Gerry Weber Open on Saturday afternoon. Federer fired 15 aces while double-faulting only once to advance after one hour and 38 minutes.

Haas, who beat Federer in last year's Halle title match, maintained his momentum from an outstanding first half of 2013 with a stellar opening set. The 35-year-old German seized a break at 3-2 and he saved all three of the break points against him. Haas won 17 of 19 first-serve points in the opener and he wrapped things up with the set on his racket at 5-3.

Federer fought back swiftly and decisively to begin set two. The third-ranked Swiss broke right away en route to a 3-0 advantage. Federer did not come close to giving the lead back, because he dropped a mere three points in five service games.

Haas continued to play solid tennis for the most part in set three, but his opponent was too good and one horrendous service game doomed him at 1-1. The two-time Halle champion tossed in two of his nine double-faults in the third game to get broken at love. Federer held serve the rest of the way, striking five aces and no double-faults throughout the decider without facing a break point.

"It was a great match for me to play and then also to win," the top seed assured. "I'm very happy that I was able to maintain really a high level of play. After losing the first set, there’s not that much margin anymore. So it was a big, good win for me. And I thought the quality was also extremely high."

"It was a very close match, a very good match," said Haas. "At the beginning of the second set, he was trying to be a little bit more aggressive. He started serving very well and didn't give me many chances to try and break him. Once he starts running ahead, he's very hard to catch up, especially on grass."

Next up for Federer is Mikhail Youzhny, a 6-3, 6-2 upset winner over Richard Gasquet.

It is because it is Grass Court Tennis. Hass was good throughout sans the 9 double faults. Fed served well and shanked well but the DF's undid Hass.

Roger will be ousted in the quartefinals at Wimbledon if he keeps playing like this.

Is the gold plated federina still searching for his first title for 2013? Oh dear.... Where is crap20-10? Why isn't it here cheering on Sir Smugalot to try and help him win?

Discount in as much as you wish Rolland Garros, but it is where the Slam record in Men's Tennis is being achieved. Not in US Open, not in Wimbledon nor in Australian Open. Fedfarts will remain jealous on how dominant Rafa in that Slam. Your man will die trying to equal that record and let's see crying elephant nose can emulate that feat even at the lowest event 250. nyahaha.

I would say it's Fed who deserves better fans, no, sienna? You are here today because Fed is playing Youzhny, a player with a dismal record against Fed, a player Fed will beat and win his first trophy in a year. Why do you disappear when Fed is losing?

Good luck to Fed today. Hope this gives him confidence going into Wimby and he becomes a real contender, not just a potential banana skin.

If Fed plays like this at Wimby he will be lucky to reach the quarters.
