  • Federer double-bagels Zverev, Haas beats Monfils

Federer double-bagels Zverev, Haas beats Monfils Roger Federer defeats Mischa Zverev without losing a single game on Friday in Halle. Federer is joined in the quarterfinals by Tommy Haas, a three-set winner over Gael Monfils.

    (1) Roger Federer d. (WC) Mischa Zverev 6-0, 6-0

Federer earned the second double-bagel of his career on Friday afternoon as he destroyed Zverev during quarterfinal action at the Gerry Weber Open. The five-time champion of this event struck four aces and one double-fault while booking his spot in the last four after a mere 39 minutes.

Zverev, who was granted a wild card into the Halle main draw as one of Germany's home hopes, showed hardly any signs of life in his surprise quarterfinal appearance. The world No. 156 was especially hopeless on serve, winning a mere 33 percent of his first-serve points and 31 percent when he had to toss in a second delivery. Federer also faced no break points en route to a semifinal showdown against doubles partner Tommy Haas.

    (3) Tommy Haas d. Gael Monfils 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3

Haas secured a semifinal berth in far more entertaining fashion, taking out Monfils in one hour and 53 minutes on Friday. Just like in the German's second-round match against Ernests Gulbis, the first set had to be decided with a tiebreaker. Neither man had faced a single break point en route before Monfils cruised through the 'breaker seven points to four.

To the delight of the crowd, though, it was mostly all Haas the rest of the way. Monfils continued to play stellar tennis, but at times he concerned himself more with putting on a show whereas Haas remained strictly business. The 35-year-old broke at 5-3 in the second then used an early break one set later to ultimately clinch victory. Haas won 31 of 35 first-serve points over the final two sets and he finished with four aces to Monfils' 14. Both men recorded four double-faults.
