• Gasquet begins 2013 Halle campaign against Melzer

    6/13/13 4:50 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gasquet begins 2013 Halle campaign against Melzer Richard Gasquet, the No. 2 seed at the Gerry Weber Open, will begin his bid against Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer.

France's Richard Gasquet and Jurgen Melzer have played 4 other times since their first meeting in Poertschach, Austria on clay. Melzer won their first two matches, Gasquet has won the two most recent.

The Frenchman has had a fantastic season so far. He had a heartbreaking loss to Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round of the French Open, but otherwise his results have been impressive. He owns a 28-9 record on the season with a pair of titles. His ranking sits at No. 9 in the world.

Jurgen Melzer is ranked 36 in the world, but his form hasn't been great so far this year. He has more losses than wins in 2013 with a 14-16 record and he had a dismal clay season, including a first round ouster in Paris at the hands of Igor Sjisling.

Prediction - Gasquet should be well-positioned to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. The grass courts suit his game better than clay does and Melzer has been off the boil except for two good tournaments in Zagreb and Miami (where he reached the quarterfinals). Gasquet for the win.
