Federer cruises in Halle, Monfils wins again Roger Federer kicks off his Halle campaign with a straight-set win over Cedrik-Marcel Stebe on Wednesday. Federer is joined in the quarterfinals by Gael Monfils, who eased past Jan Hernych.

    (1) Roger Federer d. (WC) Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-3, 6-3

Federer cruised through his first match at the 2013 Gerry Weber Open on Wednesday evening, as he dismissed Stebe in one hour and seven minutes. The top-seeded Swiss dropped serve once in the opening set, but he won three of his first five return games and converted all three of his break chances in that span. Stebe lost a horrendous 14 of 21 points in the opener even when he put his first delivery of play.

Although Federer never really raised his level to a height he did not have to reach in this one, he took care of his serve the whole way in set two. The five-time Halle champion fought off the only break point he faced and used one more scalp of the Stebe serve before closing out the proceedings on his own racket at 5-3. Stebe, who benefited from a wild card into one of his home events, finished with five aces and one double-fault. Next up for Federer is another German wild card, Mischa Zverev.

    Gael Monfils d. (Q) Jan Hernych 6-2, 6-3

Monfils withdrew from Wimbledon on Wednesday, but his Halle bid is still going strong after a routine victory over Hernych in one hour and 14 minutes. The Frenchman played like he knew he was going to win, primarily focusing on putting on show with shot-making that was at times brilliant and at other times inexplicable. Through it all, Monfils saved six of seven break points while striking seven aces compared to only one double-fault.

Hernych had done well to qualify for the main draw before upsetting Daniel Brands. The 254th-ranked Czech, however, was outmatched in this one. He recorded no aces while double-faulting twice and he dropped serve four times. Hernych survived a tough service game at 2-5 in the second to stay alive, but Monfils closed things out with ease one game later. The world No. 67 awaits either Tommy Haas or Ernests Gulbis in the quarterfinals.
