Federer, Haas lose in doubles, Zverev beats Goffin Roger Federer and Tommy Haas lose in the doubles first round on Monday in Halle, as they are taken out by the Grand Slam-winning duo of Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner. In singles, Mischa Zverev advances past David Goffin.

Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner ousted Roger Federer and Tommy Haas with a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory in the first round of the Gerry Weber Open doubles tournament on Monday afternoon. Federer and Haas broke immediately en route to a 2-0 advantage in the opening set, but it went downhill from there for the crowd favorites.

After giving the break back, Federer donated a mini-break in the decider with a netted volley at 2-3. Melzer and Petzschner--twice Grand Slam champions--ultimately won six of the set's last seven points before using one break to take the second.

"We are two dinosaurs," Federer joked. "We're hanging in there. It was the first time we ever played together. It was good fun and I thank him for playing. Unfortunately it ended in the first round but I was happy to play with Tommy."

In singles action, Germany's own Mischa Zverev recovered from a slow start to topple David Goffin 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. The world No. 156 broke serve at 5-4 and 6-5 in the second to help his comeback effort. Next up for Zverev is either Jerzy Janowicz over Philipp Petzschner.

Are both the victors German? I sure hope so.

Do / did Roger & Tommy play doubles together that often?

I just get the feeling the Halle organizers thought that was going to be a little bit of a marquee doubs draw, for them to make it at least through the quarters.

They're both in the top half of the singles draw, too.

Great to see Fed trying his hands out at doubles with Tommy to get a feel for the grass, but too bad they lost.

Melzer is an excellent doubs player and Petz, though not as accomplished, made it a tight match.

That is not at all what Feds looks like now! I like his short hair, a bit grown out - and- he is going headband-less! looking good, Roger Federer ; )
