  • Murray returns to action in London

    6/9/13 10:24 PM | Kelli DeMario
Murray returns to action in London World No. 2 Andy Murray makes his much-anticipated return to competition, as the ATP World Tour transitions from clay to grass for the second week of June. The two-time former champion enters the event as the top seed.

World No. 2 Andy Murray is back on court after missing the second Grand Slam of the season at Roland Garros. The 26-year-old was unable to compete at the tournament due to a back injury. Murray will be making his 8th appearance at Queen’s Club, where he sealed title-winning runs in 2009 and 2011.

"The conditions at Queen's are perfect," said the top seed. "It's a great setting and the Centre Court is really good, so it's perfect preparation. I'll be short of matches. I've done enough training over the last 10 days or so. I actually did a big training block after Monte Carlo, so some of that should still be in there too. It's just matches that I'll need.

"Normally, coming from the clay court, I'd be match tough, just not used to the surface, whereas this year I won't be match tight but at least I'll have had 10 days on the grass."

Murray headlines a competitive half of the draw that includes: (4) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, (7) Alexandr Dolgopolov, (8) Kevin Anderson, (9) Benoit Paire, (12) Lukas Rosol, (14) Denis Istomin and (15) Pablo Andujar.

Other players in the same section are Marinko Matosevic, Michael Llodra, Benjamin Becker, Bernard Tomic, Santiago Giraldo, Jesse Levine, Tatsuma Ito, Jamie Baker and Rajeev Ram.
After a first-round bye, Murray is scheduled to open his bid against France’s Nicolas Mahut or American Rhyne williams.

World No. 6 Tomas Berdych leads the bottom half of the draw alongside fellow seeds (5) Marin Cilic, (6) Sam Querrey, (10) Grigor Dimitrov, (11) Julien Benneteau, (13) Jarkko Nieminen and (16) Grega Zemlja.

Additional entrants in the half are Paul-Henri Mathieu, Michael Russell, Ryan Harrison, Guido Pella, Xavier Malisse, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, James Ward, Ivan Dodig and former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

Following an opening-round bye, Berdych will face either Thiemo de Bakker or Ilija Bozoljac.

Grass is so neglected you can scarcely call it a 'season'. Even what IS left is seriously undermined. Can't believe only 250 points for an event featuring 3 3 grand slam champions and 5 slam finalists. And all for the sake of dirt and concrete. My gripe for the day.

alex , 6/10/13 2:41 PM

I never get tired of hearing this opinion of the neglect of grass (or making it), many of share it, as it is so true. Grass is a great surface and provides its own challenges. We should absolutely continue to deem Wimbie a very important Masters. Too bad there are not the weeks and multiple high points lead up tournaments for it. In an ideal world a part of the summer would be devoted to it and less to hardcourt. Perhaps part of the difficulty is that apparently the date for Wimbledon was set long ago based on when the weather was most likely to be good. Although the weather in the cities near the North Sea is pretty unreliable all summer long...

chlorostoma , 6/10/13 3:48 PM

let's go Andy! Time for you to shine!

natashao , 6/10/13 6:54 PM

It seems that Andy is recovered well. Great to see him back on court.

As for the grass season, agreed. It is too short, it is a shame and it's ridiculous. That's the surface the modern game of tennis started on. Maybe some adjustments of the schedule could be made and a Masters could be added? Mission impossible with the current state of affairs :(

danica , 6/10/13 9:17 PM

Hopefully not mission impossible. I've heard multiple pros and commies talk about how grass is laughably neglected and there should be at least 1 if not more masters on it. It's funny looking at history, with grass being the most prominent surface to the most endangered.

ts38 , 6/10/13 10:17 PM

Great to have Andy back. He is the 2nd best mover on the grass behind Roger. If only he can keep his head together and not get into those defensive patterns and mindset that his spanish training has inflicted him with. He has close to 4000 points to defend till USopen. Not to mention the Brits waiting for a wimbledon champ for the last 80 years. No pressure Andy! LOL!

JamesDjokovicFan , 6/10/13 10:22 PM

So all this practice and training blocks he's done INSTEAD of RG despite his crippling back injury. LOL Big pussy

pennster , 6/10/13 11:17 PM

Pennster,
why? Why such harsh words?

Andy was able to walk so his back injury is not grave. With proper therapy and exercise, that pain can be diminished. I think he was looking at the bigger picture and thus made the decisions he made. He knew his chances at RG were not great, he knew he could make his injury greater there, so why risk his very good chance in Wimbledon? To make some tennis fans satisfied? He weighed pros and cons and from my standpoint, there is nothing wrong with that. He wants his career to last, be long and successful and doesn't want to jeopardize it. How can anyone blame him (or anyone who makes similar decisions)?

danica , 6/11/13 2:21 AM

pennster why do you hate Muzza? Your posts are all Muzz hate posts. No logic. No reasoned argument. Just blind hate.

holdserve , 6/11/13 4:37 AM

@danica/holdserve, what do you think of the hundreds of hateful posts written weekly on this site pertaining to Fed and his fans? are those posts hateful, logical, or just blind hate? Just asking. The same rule of thumb should apply to all don't you think?

scoretracker , 6/11/13 4:56 AM

@James, 10.22PM, Great comment. I guess you won't be part of the hydra, coz you've given credit where you think/feel it's due.

scoretracker , 6/11/13 4:59 AM

The Hydra is defined by hate of Rafa. James qualifies.

holdserve , 6/11/13 5:59 AM

Go Muzza go! Great to have you back - no pun intended.

leftarmgonewrong , 6/11/13 6:34 AM

Scoretracker,
It doesn't matter who the hateful posts are addressed to. As far as I am concerned, all of them should be deleted. But as there is no moderation here, one can either read them and feel sick afterwards, get into endless discussion or chose to ignore them.

danica , 6/11/13 8:55 AM

^^^^^Seconded

ed251137 , 6/11/13 9:18 AM

^^^^^ I was going to say "thirded" but that's not a word, so I just want to applaud danica's sentiments so well said @ 8:55 AM.

Nativenewyorker , 6/11/13 9:25 AM

SEE BELOW POST FROM A SUPPOSED NOLE FANS HAHAHA.

AH AH AH, be careful, check twice what moniker you are being logged before you post to avoid tarnishing further your already decaying credibility ahahahahahaha.

Raindrops , 6/11/13 1:00 PM

Danica, what do you think your friends here would have said to you about your Nole if he did what Andy did-saving himself. Imagine what you would have had to put up with.

pennster , 6/11/13 7:04 PM

Oi, Holdserve, we had this conversation re Murray before -see below:

He screws over the tourny at Basel by asking for wild card and then says he has butt pain.

He screws over the tourny at Marseilles twice.
He screwed over Adidas by wearing Hugo Boss and they complain.
He called Dubai a practice sesssion.

Declines Davis Cup for ranking points.
In short he doesn't know how to treat business.
He tries to imitate Novak: going to adidas, going gluten-free, getting a Czechoslovak coach, trying to start a tennis academy and just recently buying a hotel like Novak did a few years ago. Novak just started a charity, will he do that next?

He went recently on his facebook and tried to get people to vote for him for some Brit award. Why does he need to do that?
His mother is a really obnoxious fist-pumping mama. I realize Lendl is trying to put a muzzle on Mrs. Muzz but ugh. Murray was asked at Cincy by Chris Fowler if his mother had his medals. Now, Murray is a 26 year old man so I guess people don't believe he is not dominated by Judy.
Becker, Wade, Martina and others think he's a drama queen and I agree.
He looks like a platypus covered in matted hair-the part that's not balding. His constant swearing and histrionics on court make his personality nearly as ugly as his exterior.
He tanks a whole RG tournament due to a crippling back injury. Pussydom.
Is that enough or should I write more?

pennster , 6/11/13 7:20 PM

shut up raindrops.

Scrotracker , 6/11/13 7:20 PM

pennster is a psychotic bitch.

Scrotracker , 6/11/13 7:22 PM

Mind your own business scrotracker...scratch your "TWINKy" itchy self just right there.

Raindrops , 6/11/13 7:30 PM

pennster is the psychopathic comedy gift that keeps on giving. Priceless. Does he ever talk about tennis? It's always about Murray, all the time. #obsessivedisorder

racquet , 6/11/13 7:34 PM

raindrops are falling on my head, they are full of herpes.

Scrotracker , 6/11/13 7:35 PM

LOL! Murray being attacked now by the rafabots? WOW! I wonder what would have happened if Murray beat kneedal at wimbledon like Federer or Djokovic!

Fedkovic23 , 6/11/13 9:38 PM

Scrotumtracker:
As Deuce has said, and I'll quote:
Tut. Tut. Public forum and I'll "poke my nose" exactly where I want and respond to whom I like. It's called freedom of speech, btw.

pennster , 6/11/13 9:43 PM

Racquet:
Your ridiculous little opinion has been noted.

pennster , 6/11/13 9:50 PM

"He tanks a whole RG tournament due to a crippling back injury. Pussydom.
Is that enough or should I write more? "

What are your opinions on skipping not one, but 3 GS in a row because of a "knee injury" and playing golf and prancing around the beaches because you got beaten by a player ranked 100 in the world in the 2nd round.

Interesting statement from Deuce. Freedom of speech, good

Fedkovic23 , 6/11/13 10:40 PM

Shut up pennster, no one cares.

Scrotracker , 6/11/13 10:49 PM

Oh cool Fedkovic is back. Retardation can continue.

Scrotracker , 6/11/13 10:50 PM

@chlorostoma -

" We should absolutely continue to deem Wimbie a very important Masters."

LOL, sweetie, were you trying to make a joke?

@Fedkovic -

I really enjoyed your absence during the RG final. I'm kind of embarrassed that you purport to be a Roger fan. Could you go sit down somewhere quiet?

mara002 , 6/11/13 10:59 PM

Fedkovic
Muggy skipped the entire tournament in France because he is shite on clay and is saving himself. Rafa can compete anyplace and has all the hardware to prove it. I remember Roddick in recent years skipped Olympics so he could win USO. LOL

pennster , 6/11/13 11:03 PM

"But as there is no moderation here, one can either read them and feel sick afterwards, get into endless discussion or chose to ignore them.

danica, 6/11/13 8:55 AM

Good advice danica, I hope you and those who agreed with you can stick to what you say, IGNORE them, and not add fuel to the fire as is usually the case here with 7 of the hydra coming at some of us from all sides. And that means not supporting their friends and/or regrurgitating and complaining over and over about the same things from thread to thread to all who would listen.

NB: The posts @ :
shut up raindrops.

And several others on this thread are being written by the nutso combo willmw/conspirator. Note the spelling of the name before jumping to answer. These two nutsos, willmw and conspirator, are just adolescents who don't have the guts to say what they want to those they hate, but can only do so by using false monikers.

That is why I am in awe of the fact that you are obviously posting under your real name (must've had weird parents "lets name our daughter scoretracker") and you happily post under this real name to assume all responsibility for your terrible contributions to this site instead of cowardly hiding behind usernames like of all of us... oh wait.

Scrotracker , 6/11/13 11:52 PM

pennster, 6/11/13 9:43 PM

Good for you, the willmw/conspirator are just part of the hydra, but even worse coz they are like amoebae that suck off others.

scoretracker , 6/12/13 12:00 AM

Speaking of racist.

Scrottracker, really interested on what races you think are classy and which ones are not since you've already given your views on the Chinese.

'So all this practice and training blocks he's done INSTEAD of RG despite his crippling back injury. LOL Big pussy..'

I get the distinct impression that our pennster was raped up the kazoo by a big hairy Scotsman in a kilt!
What else could explain this obsessed and flighty nadaltard's vendetta against the murraysaurus Rex?
Surely one of the nicest guys on the tour and rarely one to skip out on a slam.
As in almost NEVAH.
Well, you can 'Suck it bitch'!
For Andy of M will be in slam winning ways for a LONG time to come yet.
So relax, sit back and enjoy another ride!
:-)

Twinge , 6/12/13 12:12 AM

Andy takes time out at Queens to make a wish come true for a child with cancer:

pennster is right: he's such an ugly character.

racquet , 6/12/13 12:28 AM

Pennster is right!
Andy Murray is evil, evil, EVIL!
I saw him be mean to a herd of puppies and kittens frolicking on the lawn.
He called them 'fluffy losers' that should think before they drink (milk)!
Bad man!!

Twinge , 6/12/13 12:49 AM

No, the ugly character is T-whinge!! That's more than obvious!

Artless and predictable as usual I see Jean
Clearly a pikey with an Internet connection
Still remains a pikey, when all is said and done.

pennster is the classic definition of a troll (look it up, he/she fits every criteria). The fact that he/she follows a player he/she hates on Facebook adds a psychopathic dimension to it. The secret if not to respond. #don'tfeedthetroll

racquet , 6/12/13 8:02 AM

This pennster character also posts over at the OregonliveBlog. Almost every post is about Murray there too. Whenever Douglas Perry writes anything complimentary about Andy, pennster berates him. He once accused Perry of being Scottish. LOL. He's a bit stalkerish for my liking.

backhand , 6/12/13 8:29 AM

Andy is wearing a t-shirt at Queens with the words

"Sweat is weakness leaving the body".

nadline , 6/12/13 11:58 AM

shut up pennster

Scrotracker , 6/12/13 1:19 PM

i agree! #don'tfeedthetroll should be the mantra...

phoenix , 6/12/13 1:28 PM

Racquet - and you know what not to do with trolls if you don't want them to drag you into their cage? Don't feed them, they thrive on in, their entire objective is to get your attention. When you even mention their name, they're probably just smiling and going, "It worked!"

alex , 6/12/13 2:26 PM

Anyone watching Muzza vs Mahut? How does he look? The game obviously, not his attire.....

rafaisthebest , 6/12/13 5:08 PM

Murray played like the guy with the 2nd highest winning % on grass, among active players. Federer and Murray are also the top 2 grasscourters of the last season.

Just for the record, on hard courts, the highest winning % is Federer, Djokovic, Murray and then kneedal. Kneedal is 12th on the list with 12 titles.

On indoors, the "complete player" kneedal is 38th all time. LOL!

Great to see the wonderful skills on showcase on grass - brings out the real athletes and puts the ball fetchers in their place.

Fedkovic23 , 6/12/13 6:06 PM

Federer has the lowest winning percentage of the top 4 when wearing moccasins to play.

Scrotracker , 6/12/13 6:13 PM

Oh no!!! Rosol lost in str8s to Becker!

chr"TheBigot"20 will not be happy.

#ItsKILLINGme

moccasins! Haha. Took me a few seconds.

Nice to see you finally developing an intentional sense of humour there S/T.

Not begore time, muzz back on court.

Ok muzz, make it quick, I only have 1/2 hour for lunch:)

alex , 6/13/13 2:12 PM

must have been a tight tie-break.. good for Muzza to go through, he needs matches

Shireling , 6/13/13 3:17 PM

Good to see Muzza cruising at Queens. Damn the seedlings at Wimby, I hope he does not meet Rafa in the quarters......

rafaisthebest , 6/13/13 7:25 PM

This pennster character also posts over at the OregonliveBlog @8:29am

Backhand, thanks for the proof that I don't use multiple monikers like most of the peeps here. Now go and tidy up after yourself.

pennster , 6/14/13 12:58 AM

Yawn
Why don't you go and s**ew yourself instead trolly dolly?

Twinge , 6/14/13 1:43 AM

LOL, 6:20PM, you've got to be an absolute moron to laugh at your own fake posts.

BTW, where's the TT police when you write your fake stuff and keep using fake monitors? I suppose they are too busy hounding/harassing, Fedkovic, seventeen, James, and novakisthebest, (who's a poster on several other sites ) for absolutely no reason except jealousy that the new posters chose to be Fed/djoker fans and not the prized possession of many here? Jealousy has many faces as in hydra.

scoretracker , 6/14/13 4:27 AM

scoretracker, I am really disappointed that you are supporting a troll like the hydra. I thought better of you.
Anyway, don't forget when you are close to garbage, you get some of the stink on yourself.
