  • Federer, Haas team up in doubles at Gerry Weber Open

    6/9/13 8:32 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer, Haas team up in doubles at Gerry Weber Open A dream first-time doubles pairing will take the court this week in Halle. Five-time singles champion Roger Federer and two-time singles champ Tommy Haas are teaming up and will contest their first-round match on Monday.

Roger Federer and Tommy Haas will be partnering up in doubles for the first time in their careers when they grace the grass courts of Halle, Germany on Monday. Federer and Haas are set to headline the night session in opening-round action of the Gerry Weber Open against Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner.

"I think he was looking to play doubles and knew that I was also looking," Haas explained. "We talked about it and he was ready to go, so I’m very excited about it. It's great to do this at this time in our careers. I hope we can focus, as we’ll probably have too much of a good time out there. It will be nice to play in front of some very enthusiastic fans and have a good doubles match against Melzer and Petzschner, who are Grand Slam champions. It should be fun."

Melzer and Petzschner have twice won majors, first at Wimbledon in 2010 and again at the 2011 U.S. Open. They also reached the Wimbledon semifinals last season. Petzschner, however, has been struggling with injuries and he has played only six ATP main-draw singles matches in 2013. The German is also a disappointing 3-6 at the ATP level in doubles this year, although he at least won a Challenger title with Melzer back in March.

Federer played doubles last year in Davis Cup action and at the Olympics, but this is his first ATP tournament doubles appearance since Indian Wells in 2011 (finished runner-up with Stanislas Wawrinka). Haas owns a 5-8 doubles record this season with six different partners.

Two of the top 5 most talented players of this millennium. Along with Safin, Djokovic and Murray/Gasquet. I have been fortunate to hit with Tommy a few times in my life and it is hard to focus on your game when a guy plays with as much magic as Haas does. Unfortunately Tommy has had some REAL unfortunate injuries that plagued his career. Ofcourse with Haas' personality and looks, he is obviously not going to have single-minded focus [a lot like Safin/Nole in that respect]. I would prefer talented players like Safin/haas/Gasquet have all the fun they are entitled to than be a OCD inflicted nut with 0 personality and have an uncle who rides your life to make you achieve success.

Good luck to Roger and Tommy!

Yeah better to have injuries or OCDs than to be like Fedkovic with his head perpetually up his own ass. Do you really love that stinky environment? Does it explain your obsession with pansies and Rafa's OCDs?

If Tommy haas had no injuries in the past I am sure he shared grandslam titles with Federer before Nadal era...

I think Haas was not disciplined enough. It is not just his injuries.

Fedkovic,
You hit with Haas? Impressive.

chr18 , 6/10/13 3:38 AM

chr18 do you believe the Hydra which has no knowledge of tennis actually hit with Haas? The sun might as well be believed to rise in the West!
Anyway if you are delusional enough to believe it ( not impossible for a Fed fan) good luck!

@Fedkovic:

Impressive stuff man. Hitting with a pro tennis player. I know a few guys on tennis who play at the same club that had Bryan brothers/Blake/fish come for practice but Haas is another league altogether.

LOL! 0 personality - perfect description, no? Gasquet has his own issues, I think. Safin/Haas - coolness.com, enough said.

Federer/Haas played a great dubs match against melzer/petzchner. They played some good game, those two. melzer/petschner are former wimbledon dubs champs and got the job done. I hope fed plays doubles after he is done with his singles career. Something like what Navratilova did. My dream doubles team would be federer/safin. I wish Federer played some mixed doubles with navratilova in one of the tournaments. That would have been epic.

@James: that must have been a great experience to be present in the same room and court with those guys. Awesome! ignore the childish jealousy. The only people whose credibility is not questioned are those who are in the clan, other than that, the infantile garbage is to be expected. Misery loves company!
