• Nadal and Djokovic clash in French Open semifinal blockbuster

    6/6/13 3:14 PM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal and Djokovic clash in French Open semifinal blockbuster The latest and greatest in tennis rivalries were feature another installment at the French Open as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic battle for a spot in Sunday's final.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 4 Rafael Nadal have one of the most prolific rivalries in tennis history. The two men have met a whopping 34 times already, with Nadal edging Djokovic in the head-to-head 19-15.

The rivalry heavily favored Nadal at the beginning. The Spaniard won 7 of their first 10 matches, but Djokovic has recently started to close the gap, especially with his run in 2011, where he defeated Nadal in 6 consecutive matches.

Nadal settled some of the score in 2012, winning all of their clay court matches, including one for the title at Roland Garros, which Nadal won in 4 sets.

The dynamic is a bit different this year. Nadal missed half of last year and the first part of 2013 with a chronic knee injury, but has come back to the Tour with a vengeance. Djokovic won their only other meeting this year, as he won the Monte Carlo Masters over Nadal for the first time.

For the first week of play, Djokovic was clearly the better player, perhaps the in-form player of the tournament. But from the round of 16 on, it has been Nadal who has impressed, playing his more standard form of controlled aggression and stomping Kei Nishikori (12) and Stan Wawrinka (9).

The weather will surely be a factor, as the cold, damp conditions of week 1 favoring Djokovic and the warmer, sunnier weather of week 2 favoring Nadal. It's bad news for the Djokovic camp that Friday's forecast for Paris looks to be sunny and warm.

Both men are chasing history, with Djokovic looking for the the Career Slam and Nadal aiming to be the first man ever to win 8 titles at the same Grand Slam.

Prediction - The edge goes to Djokovic, who demolished Nadal in the Monte Carlo final. The Serb in 5.

vamoooooos rafa!

rafaelo , 6/6/13 4:16 PM

I knew it, I had a sneaky suspicion that Cheryl was leaning towards Novak when I saw that glowing blog, hahaha!

Well Ms Muzza, prepare to eat some marinated crow because the Bull will not be stopped! He is lowering his head as we speak, front legs scratching and digging into the ground, nostrils flaring, snorting.........

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 4:34 PM

I won't make any predictions. Like nadline often says, the outcome is decided on the tennis court by the players, not by pundits tapping on their computer keys.

holdserve , 6/6/13 4:40 PM

Oh Cheryl, how soon we forget.

Conspirator , 6/6/13 4:51 PM

Just seeing the image you can already skip the article :)

Shireling , 6/6/13 5:15 PM

rafa should approaches to this match with a specific and right strategy! he has not the weapon to hurt nole! he HAS to come up with a winning strategy not to let nole dictate his play! otherwise I give the edge to nole

rafaelo , 6/6/13 5:18 PM

This is the match I am waiting for.

This is clay but I don't want to be so over confident, so I am sending all my good vibes for you Rafa to help you, in anyways. Be calm and play scentilating tennis for us (Rafans) to enjoy.

Raindrops , 6/6/13 5:18 PM

#Vamos Rafa

nadline , 6/6/13 5:23 PM

@rafaelo, I don't understand, if Rafa does not have the weapons to hurt Nole, what winning strategy can he come up with to not let Nole dictate play? I would understand if you just said Rafa does not have any weapons to hurt Nole therefore I give the edge to Nole.

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 5:26 PM

In 24 hrs time we will know the answer.

#Vamos Rafa

nadline , 6/6/13 5:28 PM

I will explain if you want ;) RITB

rafaelo , 6/6/13 5:29 PM

ritb, even as a nole fan i admit that rafa has the weapons to hurt nole. not only on his racquet, but his mental strength. i just wonder which rafa will show up. the matador or the Spanish bull. :)

dejan1989 , 6/6/13 5:29 PM

It looks like Cheryl was asked to write a story to go with the picture. I shall enjoy reading crystal ball gazers' predictions, but as Rafa says, it all whistling in the wind.

#Vamos Rafa

nadline , 6/6/13 5:40 PM

Thanks dejan1989 for your kind words. Being a regular on TT you will know by now that we Rafans can appear like we do not believe in our guy sometimes! I am sure rafaelo wants Rafa to win but is a little scared of Nole's solid game!

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 5:46 PM

well put
I have the same questions re Rafa
and re Nole: which Nole will show up?
Both will not take anything for granted
I just hope for an exciting match, not one rife with nervous play
I do think that the ice-cold Rafa will show up, and the very determined Nole

chlorostoma , 6/6/13 5:47 PM

^let me rephrase exciting match: I just hope we get a match where neither is playing with too much nerves, rather both playing high level most of the time (but without going past 3.5 hours or so)

chlorostoma , 6/6/13 5:49 PM

thanks ritb, chlorostoma, i have known about TT for quite some time and would always tend to browse thru, just never really had the time to post my thoughts due to my studies. it was only recently that i decided to sign up and join. :) i do not think there is a better analogy to describe analogy. When he plays as the matador he allows the opponent to dictate play, whereas as the Spanish Bull he is at his best. Hopefully the Spanish Bull comes out tomorrow. I want my Nole to beat him at his best!

dejan1989 , 6/6/13 5:53 PM

I want my Nole to beat him at his best!

dejan1989 , 6/6/13 5:53 PM

Good fan. As a Rafan, I feel exactly the same, with the roles reversed of course!

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 5:57 PM

Let's just imagine for the sake of argument that in 2013, Rafa was Nole and Nole was Rafa according to their results, this is what Cheryl would have written:

Djokovic has made all 8 finals in all the matches he has played this year and has won 5 titles on clay losing only his first match after his comeback and the final in MC to Rafa. That loss is not significant as that was a best of 3. With Djokovic's record of match wins at RG, inspite of not playing his best in the 1st week here, his SF performance against Wawrinka was far more impressive than that of Rafa over the 35 year old Haas in his SF. So I give the edge to Rafa, bearing in mind that Djokovic has only made one clay final this year.

nadline , 6/6/13 6:00 PM

backhand is the stronger wing of novak! he has a solid two handed backhand! rafa's forehand topspins usually fall short in the ad court, so when they get to the baseline they are in the rise or afterward so nole with that backhand can easily handles those shots.
because rafa can not cover his forehand side easily now a days, nole out hits rafa's forehand side with fast and powerful backhand crosscourt or running around his backhand side and hitting I/O forehands and make winners! if you noticed most of winners against nadal is on that side of the court, his ad court!
so as far as he avoids the ad court and the middle of the court by short balls and cut the angle for nole to hit I/O forehands and tries to focus on nole's forehand side by deep shots and especially inside out forehand rafa is fine in rallies!

rafaelo , 6/6/13 6:19 PM

So I give the edge to Djokovic, bearing in mind that Rafa has only made one clay final this year.

nadline , 6/6/13 6:19 PM

rafaelo, you are wasted on TT, why don't you offer your services to Rafa, it seems like U. Toni is not doing a good job. How on earth did Rafa, of all people, manage to beat Djoko at RG last year with no weapons against him.

nadline , 6/6/13 6:24 PM

again I don't know whether I am grammatically right? I am sorry already :D

rafaelo , 6/6/13 6:25 PM

because he did exact the same thing! in both AO and RG final last year!!! I am not telling he can not win! of course he can and I wish! but I'm telling a fact that his usual weapons is not working against nole!
why are you guys so offensive to me? :D easy, we are friends. and I respect all of you and followed you since 2009 AO final :D

rafaelo , 6/6/13 6:29 PM

So you have no weapons against a guy, but it takes him nearly 6 hrs to beat you on his best surface in 5 sets and you beat him in 4 on your best surface. Hilarious!

nadline , 6/6/13 6:31 PM

may be I couldn't make my point! I thought I made myself clear! I told you he did exactly the right thing in both AO and RG finals!!!! he targeted nole's forehand more often and that Ao finals was his best encounter with nole in past two years! I was so excited back then! and I was sure with this kind of play he will not loose to nole any time soon :)

rafaelo , 6/6/13 6:37 PM

Well rafaelo , let me take liberty to correct you - the mistake you made was saying Rafa has 'NO' weapons against Nole. The word NO.

The right statement would be ' Rafas weapons are less effective against Nole than they are against other players'

And I agree Rafa has to use DTL FH n BH more tomm, just cross court wont cut..esp no CC FH to Noles BH. Nole feeds on it . He used DTL FH and CC BH well in last years final

sanju , 6/6/13 6:39 PM

thanks sanju :) yes that's what i meant! and that DTL on the run is the key shot! will destroy opponent confidence

rafaelo , 6/6/13 6:45 PM

Also many people are predicting Nole win on strength of his Monte Carlo win. I have hard couple of people use that arguement

sanju , 6/6/13 6:47 PM

@rafaelo, so Rafa will do the right things he has done at both AO and RG finals as you put it.

It's okay if you feel Nole has the advantage, that is your opinion. When you support that opinion with statements that do not make sense of course you will be asked to elaborate. Nothing wrong with that.

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 6:49 PM

Rafa knows he has to go to Noles FH more, use his own DTL FH more, hit his CC BH and DTL BH deep , serve well more to Noles FH and volley sharp

He knows whats the strategy, its just about executing it himself and also Nole letting him execute

sanju , 6/6/13 6:51 PM

it perfectly makes sense for me!

rafaelo , 6/6/13 6:52 PM

Novak himself has said the MC win gives him a mental edge so Cheryl et al are not alaone in saying this. Seems tenuous to me given that was the first meeting between Novak and Rafa post Rafa's comeback. But, what do I know.........

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 6:53 PM

1st set is key and Rafa cannot , simply cannot start slow.

sanju , 6/6/13 6:53 PM

of course he knows :)

rafaelo , 6/6/13 6:58 PM

If I was Novak I would definitely gain confidence from the win in MC and if I was Rafa I would say it's irrelevant, it only natural.

Who knows how either of them will play tomorrow? We'll just have to wait and see. It all depends which outcome you want the way you see things. The facts are all there and we can all pick and choose the ones that suit the result we want. If Nole had beaten Rafa at RG last year and Rafa had beaten Nole in MC this year, all Nole's supporters would have dismissed the MC win as irrelevant and drawn on the RG win last year.

It's all horses for courses.

nadline , 6/6/13 7:00 PM

This is a tough match to call. After Monte Carlo, I would put my money on Djokovic. Then his form dipped and Nadal's picked up. When the draw came out, I was sure Nadal was winning the tournament. Their form here points towards Djokovic - he handled 2 potential tricky matches Dimitrov and Haas comfortably. Nadal struggled against Brands/Klizan before cleaning up his act.

The best call in such matches is to follow the odd-makers. They have Nadal as the favorite right now. I will take Nadal in 4

Sherlock , 6/6/13 7:02 PM

rafaelo, are you watching the Serena vs. Errani semis? This is the clear example of someone having NO weapons against someone...please do not mix these things up...and please leave Rafa out of that just isn't fair to Rafa...

natashao , 6/6/13 7:06 PM

OOOKKK guuuuyssss!!!!!!!!!! I AM SORRY!!! ARE YOU OKAY NOW? the first set in monte carlo! I couldn't make that out of my mind! I don't know about you! OK I AM SORRY! I take back my words! peace?

rafaelo , 6/6/13 7:10 PM

Good analogy @natashao, the Serena/Errani match..............

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 7:13 PM

rafaelo, 6/6/13 7:10 PM

don't worry...we are just enjoying some discussion...:)) relax...and it is nice to have you here...I enjoy reading your comments...we need both sides here: pessimistic and optimistic and then we meet somewhere in the middle...:)) cheers!!!

natashao , 6/6/13 7:16 PM

yes hopefully :)
by the way I promise my sister if rafa wins I'll buy him cup corn :D

rafaelo , 6/6/13 7:20 PM

Serena win 60 61. Errani hardly had a game point let alone a break point.

nadline , 6/6/13 7:20 PM

Speaking of... where's willmw?... oh, wait.

Oddsmaker's have Rafa at almost 2 to 1. Tiggy's got Rafa in 5.

I'll pick Rafa in three (as long as it doesn't pour rain)!

Time to win the war, Rafa.

Conspirator , 6/6/13 7:22 PM

Where the hell is the overconfidence in djokovic coming from. You only have to look at his record against rafa at Roland Garros to quash this rabid overcompensation in faith in Djokovic.

willmw101 , 6/6/13 7:24 PM

do you believe rafa can win 14 GS?

rafaelo , 6/6/13 7:24 PM

I deluded myself into getting uber-hyped up for MC forgetting that was Rafa's first meeting with Nole post hiatus. Got a rude awakening of course! Am not repeating that.......

I ma just hoping Rafa comes into the match with "colm" and let's his game flow..........

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 7:27 PM

^^ Yes

willmw101 , 6/6/13 7:27 PM

rafaelo, 6/6/13 7:10 PM,

You don't have to be sorry! You are allowed to have your opinion. Others are allowed to disagree. I believe that Rafa knows what he has to do. The things you mentioned are the tactics he used last year to beat Nole three straight times. However, it's not like Nole is just going to allow Rafa to dictate and do what he wants. We will see who will impose their will in this match. I have no doubt that Rafa will try to do what you said.

I can see why some would take issue with you saying that Rafa had no weapons to trouble Rafa, but you have clarified your initial comment.

Nativenewyorker , 6/6/13 7:27 PM

yes hopefully :)
by the way I promise my sister if rafa wins I'll buy him cup corn :D
, 6/6/13 7:20 PM

Stingy!! Buy her something better instead, maybe a nice dress

do you believe rafa can win 14 GS?
, 6/6/13 7:24 PM

Yes he can, why cant he? Just 3 more to reach that. All it needs is 2 more good years

sanju , 6/6/13 7:29 PM

I believe Rafa can win 17 Slams, and I am not being facetious. Of course that number is not accidental....................

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 7:30 PM

Rafa has his serve going in last match . His backhand CC was working deep and had zip. His serve was working as well. So, I guess match is on Rafa's racket given that tomorrow is going to be a sunny and warm day. If Rafa plays near his best then I think Nole will need to play the match of his life to beat Rafa . Wont be easy for Nole.

fedexal , 6/6/13 7:31 PM

Of course that number is not accidental....................
, 6/6/13 7:30 PM

sanju , 6/6/13 7:31 PM

Everyone is expecting the winner of Rafa Novak to win RG in final, imagine the shocker if winner comes from other side of the draw :-)

sanju , 6/6/13 7:33 PM

ritb, me too. I did not expect Rafa to lose in MC, I was shocked to say the least so I'm managing my optimism this time. Rafa was dropping his serve a lot around that time to anyone and doing that against Nole is GSM. Rafa has moved on now and he is where he needs to be to play Nole.

When he was interviewed before the MC final he said he wasn't ready to play Nole but I took that as his usual caution, he knew what he was talking about.

Nole is trying to dampen Rafa's confidence by the trash talking, taking the fight to him and eyeing him up. When they told Rafa in his on court interview that Nole was leading Haas by 2 sets to love and Rafa just shrugged his shoulders and said he would have to play his best to beat either of them in the SF, it told me that Rafa is not scared of Nole.

nadline , 6/6/13 7:34 PM

Am watching highlights of Rafa/Klizan............

willmw101 , 6/6/13 7:24 PM

I think the "over-confidence" serves 2 purposes: 1. to compensate for any self-doubt. 2. to "intimidate" Rafa because obviously word gets to Rafa......

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 7:35 PM

I fully agree with you: the bookies, when a match is hard to call, tend to be right amazingly often (or maybe not so amazingly: they have a lot of money to gain by being right and not just in who to pick but for what ratio). I guess they use a mixture of (perhaps some human input and) various software / database stats analysis mixed with messy heuristics... some system they keep tweaking to get good results. There are clever individuals who do this at home for horse races. If you're good at it and keep stats for a while and design your system well and use only fairly recent data on the horses you can even beat the bookies more often than not and make a profit, but you have to be an outlier as to how good you are at doing this. the bookies with their systems are pretty darn good.

And I say that not only because I like their prediction and ratio for rafa :-)

chlorostoma , 6/6/13 7:37 PM

'intimidate' was the word I was looking for.

nadline , 6/6/13 7:39 PM

@ sanju! she loves cup corn! and here in iran you know we are not allowed to dress as we like! Islamic dressing! so dress will be useless;) and after all i am just a student:D have not enough money to buy her a nice dress :D

rafaelo , 6/6/13 7:40 PM

Yes Nole is trying to intimidate Rafa and again and again bringing up MC final :-0

I dont think Rafa cares what Nole says

sanju , 6/6/13 7:42 PM

sanju, the other side of the draw consists of 2 players who have never been in a RG final. Tsonga has been in one final in Australia but the weight of expectations was different to now, at a home Slam. So, not only will they have to manage that aspect, they have to find a way to subdue either Novak or Rafa..........not easy.

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 7:43 PM

The trouble with intimidation as a tactic is that, just like bullying, if the target refuses to be cowed, the tactics backfire, upsetting the intimidator, leading to loss of focus etc......

So the tactic can work if the target is mentally weak, but is counter-productive if the target is mentally strong.........

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 7:49 PM

Mats is interviewing Rafa right now and Rafa says he is going to play aggressive and more inside the court.

nadline , 6/6/13 7:52 PM

If Nole is trying to intimidate Rafa in his pre-match comments, then it's simply not going to work. Mind games like that never work on Rafa. Fed has tried it in the past and he still lost. Fed was more successful against Murray, but it appears that it also will now be useless against him going forward.

Talk is cheap. What matters is what happens on the court. Rafa will never be affected by what his opponent says before a match. He will also never get involved in any kind of back and forth or trash talk himself. He lets his racket do the talking!

Nativenewyorker , 6/6/13 7:55 PM

nadline , 6/6/13 7:52 PM

And then come match time we will see Rafa hovering yaaaaaaaaaaaaaards behind the baseline, hehehe!

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 7:58 PM

rafaelo , 6/6/13 8:00 PM

So much hangs on the result of this match tomorrow.

nadline , 6/6/13 8:03 PM

And then come match time we will see Rafa hovering yaaaaaaaaaaaaaards behind the baseline, hehehe!
, 6/6/13 7:58 PM

I think he was a it closer to baseline last year right?

Oh God people by tomm all will be over, hope we all are jubiliant and celebrating. How I wish most of us were together to c a Rafa key slam match :-)

sanju , 6/6/13 8:05 PM

It just so happened that the only time Nole and Rafa played each other since a year ago ie since Rafa's 7 months off was... the week after two more weeks off practicing due to knee treatments.

You can call it splitting hairs and having rose colored glasses. But it really seems to me that the MC first set inbalance and the second set lesser inbalance in won points and other stats means very, very little in predicting their next match here at RG out of 5 sets. MC showed that Rafa was not at the level he needed to be to play the current number one player esp after not having been able to practice prior to the tournament and as a result also had less confidence. C'est tout. Not much you can take from that that is new. What was not new is the fact that Nole has the weapons to hurt Nadal big time, even on clay, at least when Nole plays superbly and or when Nadal is far from his highest level. We knew that for a long time. Nothing new in that.

If you do want to read anything of value in predicting the likelihood of the outcomes in their semi, as say the bookies would, then look at their last, say, two months of performance.

I don't think Rafa is at his highest now condition-wise nor confidence-wise, but getting their confidence-wise. Nole is not at his highest either, it seems. Pretty balanced line-up.

chlorostoma , 6/6/13 8:07 PM

I would love to know the world-wide viewing figures, both TV and livestreaming for the Rafa/Nole match tomorrow. I am sure they will be approaching, "Who Shot JR" territory.......

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 8:12 PM

@ Sanju

It can happen. I have been thinking about it for a while now. If we can all plan to meet in a Slam to watch Rafa play. I think it would be a great effort. Its something we Rafa fans should give some serious thought and planing to b4 Rafa retires!!

Nadline, I appoint you as Chairperson of the Rafa Brigade Committee!!!!!!

Monalysa , 6/6/13 8:12 PM

"Who Shot JR" territory".................I know right, RIBT!! I wonder if it will eclipse the Wimby match between Roger and Rafa in 2008?!!!

Monalysa , 6/6/13 8:14 PM

I just seems that Rafa is always at the centre of a blockbuster match!!!

Yeah, we know, Rafa is THAT special!!!!

Monalysa , 6/6/13 8:16 PM

Thanks, Monalysa.

nadline , 6/6/13 8:16 PM

Djokovic in 4.

Emiliano55 , 6/6/13 8:18 PM

I just seems that Rafa is always at the centre of a blockbuster match!!!

Yeah, we know, Rafa is THAT special!!!!

Monalysa , 6/6/13 8:16 PM

Yeah, I remember after the Australian Open 2012 final, poor Djokovic could not stop talking about happy he was to be part of a historical match, he mentioned the word history so many times! Rafa otoh was quite nonchalant about it because he has been involved in so many of them

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 8:24 PM

Rafa is 4:0 against Nole at RG.

nadline , 6/6/13 8:26 PM

Djokovic in 4.
, 6/6/13 8:18 PM

Now this really worries me. Emiliano is usually right all the time (:-

sanju , 6/6/13 8:29 PM

I agree sanju, emiliano has been known to have complete control over the outcome of live matches from behind her computer screen............

willmw101 , 6/6/13 8:30 PM

I wa waiting for Emilianos prediction since yesterday and what I read has disappointed me so much.

Emi - Please elaborate reasons

sanju , 6/6/13 8:30 PM

emiliano has been known to have complete control over the outcome of live matches from behind her computer screen............
, 6/6/13 8:30 PM

Dont be mean ya willnw . I was serious actually. I still rem he/she predicted even accurately how the 2nd day of Rafa Nole will unfold last year

sanju , 6/6/13 8:32 PM

Are you really pinning your hopes on what someone here on this site predicts? Don't you believe that it's up to Rafa? That it's in his hands? It doesn't matter how often anyone is right. It can just be luck or coincidence.

Thank goodness Rafa isn't reading any of this!

Nativenewyorker , 6/6/13 8:33 PM

I think there should be a Fatwa against predictions. I am getting tired of this Mystic Meg stuff.......................

rafaisthebest , 6/6/13 8:39 PM

No NNY not pinning hopes, its just a feel good thing .

sanju , 6/6/13 8:42 PM

Lol. Im a 'he'.
And yeah, I usually hit my predictions, and of course I have had my bad ones :P.

About this one, I think Nadal will enter the court so anxious to win. I guess we will see a Rafa playing defensively and missing shots that usually goes in.

We shall see!

Emiliano55 , 6/6/13 8:49 PM

, 6/6/13 8:49 PM

Hope you are wrong tomm

sanju , 6/6/13 8:52 PM

Emiliano has NEVER picked Rafa to win anything.

nadline , 6/6/13 8:52 PM

He has nadline

sanju , 6/6/13 8:56 PM

Emiliano has NEVER picked Rafa to win anything.
nadline, 6/6/13 8:52 PM

You are wrong. I picked Rafa many times.
It happens that just because I said a couple of times that I don't like his game all the biased fans think I try to jinx him.

Emiliano55 , 6/6/13 9:00 PM

Emilliano picked Nole over Muzz at the USO (so did I).

Conspirator , 6/6/13 9:06 PM

I said it already, I have had my bad ones too.
Last preditcion I made was Tsonga beating Roger while almost everybody gave the Roger the upper hand.

Anyways, fact is I have many more hit predictions than lost ones :p

Emiliano55 , 6/6/13 9:12 PM

Ofcourse Rafa isn't reading any of this, the guy can barely understand English. By the DUDal's own admission, Djokovic has a nice cozy residence in that large empty head of rafa's.

Any tennis fan who knows tennis should support Djokovic (Theseus), who is a knight on a mission to slay the beast (minotaur?).

Fedkovic23 , 6/6/13 9:27 PM

Yeah but that was just an anti-jinx pick. ;)

Conspirator , 6/6/13 9:28 PM

Suuuure, suuuure little FedBotSic20, very interesting. Isn't that nice! Goooood boy! Run along and play now!!!

Conspirator , 6/6/13 9:31 PM

The greatest rivalry perhaps?

One that isn't #onesided

rafakid , 6/6/13 9:32 PM

LOL @ Fedkovic. Fits perfectly. The Greek Hero Nole redeeming tennis by slaying the bull-monster. LOL!

isfand , 6/6/13 9:37 PM

Emiliano55, 6/6/13 9:00 PM,

I don't believe in jinxes. That's just nonsense. The players go out there and it's up to them. It's in their hands.

You are entitled to your prediction and opinion. I don't care about your record. I don't think anyone here knows for sure what will happen. We can say what we hope happens, what we think will happen, but Rafa and Nole will go out there and try to play their best to get the win.

Nativenewyorker , 6/6/13 9:43 PM

Who cares about anybody's prediction? My man is going to decide the outcome, not Emiliano or anybody else. The more people predict Nole will win, the more happy i feel as there is less expectation from Rafa. I wanted the bettors also to bet on Nole but most of them seem to have bet on Rafa. What a pity! Rafa revels in proving people wrong when they discount him.

I was watching MC 1st set since morning. In 1st set, rafa was broken thrice. In each game, there was a double fault, lucky net cord for nole and several deuces. So it is wrong to say that rafa was outlasted by nole in MC.

TheMightyRafa , 6/6/13 10:03 PM

Thanks for the link rafaelo! I wonder where they get the transcripts from. The slam sites use to post them all in full but they don't anymore so it was nice to read. Great perspective from Rafa as always!

Conspirator , 6/6/13 10:19 PM

Yeah but that was just an anti-jinx pick. ;)

Conspirator, 6/6/13 9:28 PM

Yeah, my predictions are all oriented to jinxing and anti-jinxing.

Emiliano55 , 6/6/13 10:28 PM

Emiliano55, 6/6/13 9:00 PM,

I don't believe in jinxes. That's just nonsense. The players go out there and it's up to them. It's in their hands.

You are entitled to your prediction and opinion. I don't care about your record. I don't think anyone here knows for sure what will happen. We can say what we hope happens, what we think will happen, but Rafa and Nole will go out there and try to play their best to get the win.
Nativenewyorker, 6/6/13 9:43 PM

Who said the contrary ? Predictions is just a game, of course it doesn't have anything to do with real life. Relax dude.

Emiliano55 , 6/6/13 10:30 PM

I'm more worried about the fact that Ricky picked Rafa!!!!

Anyways, for all tennis fans, I believe that either way we are about to be lucky enough to watch a tennis match to rival the best of them from two great champions. Just hope that it is inside four hours (as long as Rafa wins).

Conspirator , 6/6/13 10:34 PM

My fiance an I were exchanging a little banter earlier today as he is a major Federer fan! In discusssing the Rafa/Novak match I said to him that after the match I can see Rafa saying to Nole.......

"Sorry about the result today, but remember that you are the no.1 of the world, no?"

My fiance laughs and replies............"Comments like these will be absolute bullshit after Nole wins!!"

So tomorrow, Rafa, Im depending on you bcos if you lose my fiance will never let me forget it, and that could spell serious trouble!!

Monalysa , 6/6/13 11:33 PM

Hello to everyone again!!:) I will be short: If Nole wants to win, he MUST win 1st set!! BH crosscourt and FH DTL WILL BE SHOTS THAT RUINS NADAL! Novak in :)Zare, sutra pijemo:)

Marko , 6/6/13 11:48 PM

I badly want Rafa to win and continue his form right throughout the rest of the year so that he can catch Novak in the rankings. I think overcoming this Djokovic 2.0 version will be one of his greatest achievements.

Having said that I'm scared and petrified for Rafa's chances tomorrow.

The positives are all too obvious. He's on his best surface and the best ever on it. He has the confidence of 7 previous French titles. He can also refer to last year as proof that he can convincingly beat Novak on clay, especially if the conditions are right and so far the forecasts are looking good. His form this tournament is without doubt on an upward curve improving with every round. Any other player on the tour and there would be no concern.

However this is Novak. Every bit the ultimate nemesis to Rafa what Rafa is to Federer. Novak is simply better in every technical aspect. Serve, backhand, shot placement, court positioning, shot making. He also is the equal of Rafa's greatest attributes in terms of mentality, physical endurance, stamina and determination. If he plays at 100% I just don't think Rafa can stop him.

Correction, Rafa can stop him convinicingly, but will never make the necessary adjustments required. Steeping up closer to the baseline, hitting balls flatter and quicker, generating a more powerful serve (a la US Open 2010) and finishing points of a lot quicker.

Rafa's serve, forehand DTL, shot length and most importantly his backhand are the key to victory , His backhand looked fabulous against Wanwrinka yesterday and he will need the same standard so that he can maintain more aggressive style of tennis and take the game to Novak.

I'm hoping rather than believing so will say that Rafa will win in 5 epic sets, but would not be surprised at all to see Novak absolutely crush him in three straight sets.

Tomorrow is so significant. If Rafa wins it means he is ready to wrestle back the initative in his neverending struggle to topple Novak. That is great for men's tennis.

A Novak win will just cement his no1 status and herald a not very appealing prolonged dominance of the men's game.

Please Rafa win tomorrow..

lebsta2 , 6/6/13 11:50 PM

Emiliano55, 6/6/13 10:30 PM

First, I am not a dude! I guess you haven't been reading the attacks from the trolls on this site. I am supposed to be a geriatric female with a negative IQ! LOL!

I am about as chilled out as I can be. I said that I have no problem with you giving your opinion or prediction. So I don't know why you should think that I have any issue with you at all. You are entitled to make your prediction and even boast about your record. However, I am still of the belief that it's in the hands of Rafa and Nole. If someone is right, then it's more about luck than anything else.

I hope that we get a great match and may the best man win.

Nativenewyorker , 6/6/13 11:52 PM

I don't know where it comes from but I am pretty much calm about this match...last year when Rafa was playing Nole in that what most interpreted Rafa's "win or retire" RG final I was anxious, worried, shaking, filled with doubts and, I don't know why, I am fairly convinced that this match will go the Rafa's way...maybe it's because I feel there is not much at stake for Rafa even if he loses...or it's because Rafa's performance as of late got me believe that he would make that win tomorrow...last year Rafa was under pressure of proving he could beat Nole...this year he knows he can do it...MC doesn't mean a thing and we all know it...Rome and Madrid do mean...after all, it does not matter...I know Rafa will do his best, he will fight and I know that Uncle T. will have some smart game plan to implement tmrw...

it will be a blockbuster semi and it will be a treat to watch...two great champions, two best players in the world...what more should we ask for...and I don't buy that story how there could be another winner of this year's RG...whoever wins tomorrow might as well immediately be given the trophy...

Vamos Rafa!

natashao , 6/7/13 12:06 AM

Monalysa: :-)

chlorostoma , 6/7/13 12:45 AM

I'm calm too...Don't know why.
The prospect of watching the match and creating dooms day scenarios in my head makes me nervous, but if I am to think of this match as the first match they have ever played against each other, where they are both at 100%, I'm not nervous at all.

isabeau77 , 6/7/13 3:37 AM

SUPER 88888888........
This is your time........

oztennisfan , 6/7/13 4:59 AM

Stay focused throughout the whole match and be strong like a lion, Rafa!

Augustina08 , 6/7/13 5:08 AM

Vamos Rafa! Let all the Rafa fans project positive thoughts toward Rafa. May the light (sun) be with my hero!

holdserve , 6/7/13 5:08 AM

Nole will do this for his second mother.

sabs , 6/7/13 5:39 AM

Like you @natashao, I am filled with a strange calm. I say strange because I do not normally feel this calm before Rafa matches, especially important ones such as this.

Whatever happens, Rafa will do his best. Best of luck Rafa!

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 6:33 AM

The blogosphere is divided

All Rafans hoping and praying Rafa takes this yet many douting if he will

All Fed and Novak fans hoping and rooting for a Novak victory

To me key things:
Who plays with more calm and patience
Who sustains level for 3 full sets .
Who is more aggressive and tries to dictate play and doesn't get defensive (We saw in last years final, Rafa was more aggressive in sets 1, 2,4 and he won. Nole went for broke in set 3 n he won)

sanju , 6/7/13 6:39 AM

6 hrs more..

sanju , 6/7/13 6:40 AM

It will be the 1st Rafa match I will be seeing on TV Live this RG...God save me :-)

sanju , 6/7/13 6:42 AM

@sanju, have you noticed those who want/predict a Novak win are are wanting/predicting a Tsonga win? Those predicting a Rafa win are predicting a Ferru win?

Emotions are running high...

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 6:49 AM

I know Rafa is more skilled on clay than Novak, his record speaks for himself

My only worry is Novak so badly wanting this , his added motivation to do it for his coach and his desperation to beat Rafa in RG and finally Rafas endurance in best of 5 given that he has not played a 5 setter (infact more than 3 hours ) since comeback from injury

sanju , 6/7/13 6:50 AM

Tsonga is a tougher opponent RITB for both Rafa n Novak in final than Ferry

Add to that the crowd support he will get

We all know Ferru will choke or is likely to choke. Tsonga does not choke, he self destructs

sanju , 6/7/13 6:52 AM

Roger Rasheed has done a brilliant job with Tsonga, he is more careful and patient on court these days.

I was surprised he played so patiently against Fed

sanju , 6/7/13 6:53 AM

Ferru does not choke against anyone except Novak, Fed and Rafa todate. Even Muzza, he does not fear him. Look at how he went toe to toe with him in Miami but with the other three he gives up in the final set. He will not give up against Tsonga and Ferru LOOOVES a Davis Cup atmosphere which is what it will be like against Tsonga today.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 6:59 AM

I don't know about Novak but for Rafa, Ferru would be worse opponent in the final. Yes, Ferru tends to give up in the final set against Rafa but I do not think he will do that in his 1st Slam, 1st RG final. He will dig in and give it his all. Look at how he troubled Rafa in Madrid and Rome. Add to that how exhausted Rafa is likely to be after a big fight against a Novak who is likely to be inspired.

Tsonga in the final will be overwhelmed by the occasion. Look what happened to Muzza in the Wimby final against Fed. I actually prefer Rafa to play Tsonga than Ferru in the final.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 7:05 AM

Yeah but final discussion later :-). We are getting ahead of ourselves.

THe BIGGEST test today

Come to think of it ,pressure on Rafa this year compared to last year is nothing. He was going for 2 records last year - highest number of RG titles and tying Sampras for maximum number of titles at a slam.

For Novak, its the same pressure as last year - His 1st RG title (okay last year he had the all 4 in a row too) .
Hope that makes Rafa play more freely.

sanju , 6/7/13 7:25 AM

ferrer will not make the finals imo and it does not matter who makes it to the final because the real final is live today , the victor of today is RG champion 2013 and count on the greatest clay courter ever to pick up his eighth RG crown

isfand , 6/7/13 7:26 AM

eeeeeeeeeeeeeee crunchyyyyy match... that's what I hv been waiting ...
so finally here we go..
mind says nole win in 5 tight sets (why he is sooooo lucky?? )
but heart imagines a frustrated nole looking helpless and rafa in 4 ^_^ :)

waji , 6/7/13 7:56 AM

I had been toying with the idea of not watching the match live and only checking the final score after the match but I have decided: I will be here posting on TT, no matter what. Cannot be like some Fedfans who first stick a finger out to test the wind direction. Full support to Rafa!

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 8:10 AM

No way am I even thinking about the final! Rafa has to get through this semi first. One match at a time. It's going to be difficult to watch the match live. It starts at 4:00 AM my time. I am recording it but if for some reason I get up early then I will watch it live.

It's strange because I am not nervous yet. I thought by now it would hit me. I don't know why. I was more nervous during Rafa's early round matches because he was struggling and not playing well.

It's a really different feeling for me right now. I just want to wish Rafa the best of luck and hope that he comes out playing his best.

Nativenewyorker , 6/7/13 8:32 AM

Too many prognosis that have been said and I got my eyes sore already reading them.

All I want now is to watch the match just to put an end with all these talks.

I am so feeling calm, I wish the other Rafans feel the same too.

Remember, this is just a tennis match and we should enjoy it regardless of the outcome.

How many hours to wait?

Vamos Rafa !

Raindrops , 6/7/13 8:37 AM

Novak will win this match for sure whether its 4 sets or 5 sets,

Rafans are discussing about rafa opponent in Final,

it's crazy

anji123 , 6/7/13 8:56 AM

sanju, 6/7/13 7:25 AM

I honestly dont believe Rafa thinks about the records in advance. I think he's just pleased afterward if it happens. He always plays every much to win regardless. But to win RG would be his crowning achievement after what he's been through this past few months and would be an incredibly emotional moment for him.
I think ALL the pressure is on Nole. And if he lets the pressure get to him anything could happen. This is his big chance but he will be in what is almost Rafa's backyard.

I loved how calm and relaxed he was during the Wilander interview. And it will be intriguing to see who the crowd roots for the most. I have a hunch they will get behind Rafa - at least in the early stages.

rafaelo , 6/7/13 9:08 AM

goran , 6/7/13 9:28 AM

On Wednesday, Rafa and Djoker were not playing each other so it's irrelevant how they played against their respective opponents. Today is a new day and I hope Rafa prevails.

#Vamos Rafa

nadline , 6/7/13 9:59 AM

I don't know why I always choose to support these players/teams that put you through hell. I guess I'm a masochist. Although, it's true it compensates through the amount of satisfaction received when the hell ends, and my team/favorite player is on the winning side of the match. VAMOS RAFA!

childishgambino , 6/7/13 10:05 AM

One great thing about these two champions is their will to fight till the end.

Less than three hours now!

I am sure RAFA will not feed too many loopy balls to Nole, looking forward for the new tactics and fight backs. Clay games at its best.

sabs , 6/7/13 10:13 AM

I will not be watching this one. Ohh my heart..
Please Rafa be aggressive, try to play in the court and be brave, go for your own shots, do not wait Nole for making errors, you hit first.
May all the best of luck be with you, vamos Rafa....

arwen , 6/7/13 10:22 AM

This is a tough one to call. I think it will go to four sets at the very least either way, but predicting the winner is very difficult, I think it depends on how Djokovic plays. If the Djokovic of Monte Carlo shows up, he will win. Anything less then that, Nadal will win.

rbennett , 6/7/13 10:32 AM

Rafa has upped his level since MC...if Nole of MC shows up, this will not be a tight match.

phoenix , 6/7/13 10:36 AM

I don't see a 5 setter at all.

nadline , 6/7/13 10:47 AM

MC was a reconnaissance match for Rafa. This was his opportunity to test his level against the best player in the world post hiatus. He has bridged the gap since then. It will be a good match.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 10:47 AM

Me too, nadline. This will be quick.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 10:48 AM

rbennett, what makes you think that? Djokovic wasnt particularly good in the 2nd set of Monte Carlo and Rafa on normal form would have taken that second set. This match lies entirely on how well rafa not djokovic plays. We've seen what happens in matches between these two on clay when rafa is close to his best, Rafa wins, relatively easily.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 10:52 AM

ndline, RITB, willnw, phoenix - Good to c ur optimism and confidence

Hope Rafa delivers

Neil Harman ?@NeilHarmanTimes 31m Rafa and Novak studiously avoid eye contact as the former vacates Philippe Chatrier in favour of the latter. Getting down to business

sanju , 6/7/13 11:05 AM

willmw101 - Because Djokovic is the aggressor of the two, he dictates play, if he is playing his best I don't think Nadal can beat him. If you feel that he wasn't that good in the second set of Monte Carlo yet he still took it that doesn't bode well for Nadal. I don't see either player winning relatively easily, should be a cracker!

rbennett , 6/7/13 11:06 AM

Brad Gilbert ?@bgtennisnation 4h i am hoping for 2 5setters today I m leaning Torwards Little beast Ferrerrr, and the epic match I test tells me Djoker on a mission in 5 ?

sanju , 6/7/13 11:19 AM

I really look like 30 right now sanju :D :D

rafaelo , 6/7/13 11:19 AM

rbennett then why did rafa beat djokovic (in 4 sets, 3 of which were straightforward) playing at his best in RG last year?? If rafa is playing close to 100% he is the most agressive player on the mens tour on clay.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 11:22 AM

really look like 30 right now sanju :D :D

Haha.. I am 35 and people say I look younger, now I am sure I look 40 at this hour and for next 5 -6 hours :-)

In which case, you have nothing to worry about, no? If you know the outcome already, that can sit back and watch Rafa being annihilated!

sanju , 6/7/13 11:36 AM

Nick Bollettieri ?@NickBollettieri 18h
@immacReno @rolandgarros Djokovic is determined to win but Nadal is the favorite.

So bollettieri has rafa as the favourite. That was to calm you down Sanju haha..

vamosrafa , 6/7/13 11:52 AM

vamosrafa..picking Rafa?

sanju , 6/7/13 11:57 AM

Is it only minutes we are counting now?

Vamosssssssss !!!

Raindrops , 6/7/13 11:58 AM

I am nervous...but i am hopeful ! the challenge was as big last year and rafa prevailed relatively comfortably because he played near his best for most of the match.

Novak cant repeat the Monte carlo pattern because rafa's backhand is much better at the moment...If rafa comes out firing with his backhand cross court and forehand DTl/inside-out , count on him to take this match in 4 sets....If rafa starts tentatively, I would still count on rafa to shake off a nervy start and get the edge in 5

vamosrafa , 6/7/13 12:00 PM

I dont see rafa coming from 2 sets to love down though..if rafa gets into that position ,djoker is going to prevail .. I just hope rafa can keep up the intensity RIGHT FROM THE START..I must admit djoker is one hell of an intimidating opponent! Kudos to their rivalry

vamosrafa , 6/7/13 12:03 PM

This is why Federer does not want to retire, he is jealous of the Rafa-Nole rivalry and the attention it garners........

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 12:06 PM

No one will give Rafa even a chance on AO or USO HC against Djoko. I mean 99/100 people will pick Djoko.

The fact that on Rafas strongest surface clay, 50% people are predicting Djoko says a lot about what a monster and intimidator he has made himself.

sanju , 6/7/13 12:07 PM

willmw101 - I don't think Djokovic was near his best last year (Taken to 5 sets by Seppii, Tsonga held match points against him). Anyway I'm just giving my opinion, means little when it comes to the match, I'm looking forward to it :).

rbennett , 6/7/13 12:07 PM

Any idea about the weather now in Paris . Is it warm and sunny ?

fedexal , 6/7/13 12:10 PM 0541959657.html

Novak has supposedly said- I will win this

sanju , 6/7/13 12:11 PM

RITB - I wouldn't wanna speculate on how green with envy Federer is haha, but I certainly think this is THE rivalry now. The matches are nearly always epic and they're not as cert beforehand as say Nadal and Federer matches are.

rbennett , 6/7/13 12:12 PM

sanju, 6/7/13 11:26 AM

I hope I dont age 5 years this afternoon - quite old enough as it is :-(

I have to go pick somebody up from the Airport at 2pm. I'm trying to decide whether to start watching and have to leave (bound to be during a tie-break for the lst set) or not to watch at all until I get back in which case sod's law it will all be over in three quick sets.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 12:15 PM

You what they say about a glass of wine, that it numbs the nerves? Believe the hype.....

@sanju, tell me, are you enjoying this? Torturing yourself, I mean? If you're gonna implode do it somewhere private willya? Why are you trawling the internet for Novak sound-bites, especially those he repeats each and every time he plays Rafa?

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 12:15 PM

Its sunny ! around 27 degree centigrades...

vamosrafa , 6/7/13 12:17 PM

rbennett , 6/7/13 12:12 PM

Agree. BTW, please don't mind the grammatical errors in my sentences, red wine fumes have taken over.........

I have been asking myself why a savvy promoter like Don King (legendary boxing promoter) has not cottoned on to the upside in the Rafa-Nole rivalry just as there was in the Ali-Foreman one. I am sure this tennis rivalry has similar earnings potential and could make Rafa and Novak billionaires in no time..............

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 12:21 PM

RITB - I didn't even notice any errors, clearly you need to drink more wine...

Haha that is a good question, though I'm sure Nadal and Djokovic are pretty happy with the money they have!

rbennett , 6/7/13 12:24 PM

I believe if you are not watching Rafa play the number one player in the world on a warm sunny day at PC , then you really are missing something.

Rafa in 4 tight sets should prevail . First set will be the key though . Its too tight a match to call but given that Rafa is on such a roll I don't think Nole can stop him.

fedexal , 6/7/13 12:26 PM

@rbennett, true, they have made more money they could ever have dreamed of. Still, wouldn't harm to have some more. They are both very socially-conscious men and I am sure the bulk of any extra earnings they receive would go to their charitable foundations.

I am so proud to be a tennis fan. The sport has remained true to its values, a gentleman's sport.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 12:30 PM

vamossss...this what I like hahahahhaha

a real roller coaster ride.

I love it.

Vamosss !!!

Raindrops , 6/7/13 1:26 PM

If djok serves well nadal has no chance of winning simply because Nadals own serve just isn't strong enough. I think djokovics 1st serve % will determine the match.

DeadManWalking , 6/7/13 1:27 PM

good quality

rafaelo , 6/7/13 1:27 PM

If the rest of the match is as good as the start, this is going to a real treat. GREAT stuff so far.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 1:28 PM

I don't comment during important matches because of the nerves, but I will be chiming in every once in a while. For now, I don't feel like Nadal is playing his best and Djokovic is at full throttle. To me, the winner of the first set will be the winner of the match....

childishgambino , 6/7/13 1:30 PM

looking better...

childishgambino , 6/7/13 1:34 PM

And its raining here and the dish signal gone for a toss..hate it

sanju , 6/7/13 1:35 PM

Keep faith, Rafa fans. Rafa is Rafa. He will not let this go.

holdserve , 6/7/13 1:36 PM

Oh, this is just wonderful tennis from both....well except that shot right there from Djokovic. :)

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 1:36 PM

Rafa just SPANKING the ball. Wowzers.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 1:40 PM

Rafa said he will play closer to baseline right? Closer Rafa

sanju , 6/7/13 1:42 PM

I wish rafa can stand this level

rafaelo , 6/7/13 1:42 PM

it's getting tighter and tighter.

Nice match so far.

Vamos Rafa!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:03 PM

tj600 , 6/7/13 2:03 PM

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:06 PM

A major mental test for Rafa to hold. Oh what a recovery!! Set points.

And he holds!!

damianthorn , 6/7/13 2:06 PM

Raindrops , 6/7/13 2:07 PM

Monalysa. If Djokovic had a different name right now, you'd say this is a routine match for Rafa. Spectacular plays from him. Djokovic, except maybe the first game has been out of sorts.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 2:07 PM

Well played Nadal so far.

rbennett , 6/7/13 2:08 PM

Guys, any quick solution for nervousness? I'm dying here
, 6/7/13 2:01 PM

Yes breathe in and breathe out ..:-)

sanju , 6/7/13 2:09 PM

Rafa is brilliant. Forehand is on fire and backhand as well.

You should watch to enjoy our man

Raindrops , 6/7/13 2:10 PM

streaming is killing me but what the heck...

phoenix , 6/7/13 2:11 PM

Impressive Rafa so far. Djokovic started to cool off after that right leg thing he had.

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 2:11 PM

Set No 2 very crucial now

sanju , 6/7/13 2:12 PM

Thanks anyways

damianthorn , 6/7/13 2:14 PM

@ Rain,

Guess what, Im at work!! Have only score to keep me posted! But so glad Rafa has at least won first set, give him good comfidence!!!

But good sart for Rafa thus far, hopes he keeps and even elevates his intensity!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:16 PM

Huge hold for Rafa. No letdown.

I hope the Perrier benches are unbreakable.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 2:22 PM

2nd set goes fine so far.

Vamos Rafa
, 6/7/13 2:22 PM

No not from Rafa, level dropped suddenly

sanju , 6/7/13 2:23 PM

I want Rafa to keep up his intensity bcos any let dowm will cause Novak to elevate his game and create problems for Rafa. Rafa needs to keep up the pressure!!

VAM8S, my Champ!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:23 PM

I don't see Djokovic winning this match, he's not playing anywhere near well enough. And Nadal's just broken again!

rbennett , 6/7/13 2:30 PM

Where are Nole's cheerleaders???????

nadline , 6/7/13 2:30 PM

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:30 PM

Rafa should have broken Novak by now. He is playing much better and doesn't seam to have an answer to the high balls

damianthorn , 6/7/13 2:30 PM

vamossssssssss rafa

gr8nadal , 6/7/13 2:30 PM

Congrats to Conspirator for his prediction. This seems to be a 3 setter after all.

holdserve , 6/7/13 2:32 PM

Impressive stuff from Rafa so far.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 2:33 PM

novak is going for the forehand :-s

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:33 PM

Rafa fans, we should be impressed with Rafa's play but please, one set at a time!! Lets hope Rafa keeps up his intensity and level of play, and as im writng this Novak is about to break back!!......choops!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:36 PM

Djokovic is being coached.

nadline , 6/7/13 2:37 PM

we all saw that. coaching.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 2:37 PM

Novak getting some coaching. Did anybody see that

damianthorn , 6/7/13 2:38 PM

i think nadal will loose this game :-s

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:39 PM

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:39 PM

Oh noo, gives the break back..Damn

Rafas level has dropped

sanju , 6/7/13 2:40 PM

And Djokovic gets the break back. The Serb might be back in business here.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 2:40 PM

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:40 PM

C'mon guys, be fair. Rafa always get coaching by Toni.

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 2:41 PM

Vamos Rafa

Raindrops , 6/7/13 2:41 PM

this was bound to happen. djokovic is getting all the help in the world he could get. departed coaches to help him. alives one too.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 2:41 PM

I always hate when they get a break so early!!! This is what happens!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:41 PM

The Serb might be back in business here.
, 6/7/13 2:40 PM

True (:-

sanju , 6/7/13 2:41 PM

*alive ones

childishgambino , 6/7/13 2:42 PM

I have a bad feeling! very bad

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:43 PM

"C'mon guys, be fair. Rafa always get coaching by Toni."
I absolutely agree.

tj600 , 6/7/13 2:43 PM

What Emiliano55 said.

rbennett , 6/7/13 2:43 PM

True Monalysa breaking early means nothing esp between these 2

nd now suddenly Nole has the momentum

sanju , 6/7/13 2:44 PM

Novak coming back

damianthorn , 6/7/13 2:45 PM

Why have bad feeling? Its only the second set and its a best of five! You think Novak will just lie down and let Rafa win 3 sets in a row?!!

@T600, But the coaching thiing is not good!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:47 PM

no the forehand again

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:47 PM

Raf atense and Novak pressurizing him totally

sanju , 6/7/13 2:50 PM

just look at his reaction. it's over. i can't stand djokovic. most obnoxious player on the tour ever.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 2:50 PM

Only Djokovic could do that against Nadal.

rbennett , 6/7/13 2:50 PM

I hate it! but told you so!

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:50 PM

2nd set gone..back to square one (:-

sanju , 6/7/13 2:51 PM

What the hell happened there?!!! What has happened to Rafa's play now all of a sudden?!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:51 PM

MOnalysa- I agree that on court coaching is terrible. BUt NOvak isn't the first(nor will he be the last) to do it...

tj600 , 6/7/13 2:52 PM

Rafa got broken again....

Nole to serve for the set.

Be strong Rafa....Vamos !!!

Raindrops , 6/7/13 2:52 PM

That is an inexplicable drop off in level from rafa. He had that 2nd set on his racquet and then started dropping the ball so short, missing nearly all of his 1st serves and allowing djokovic into the points. Not good enough. This match is on Rafa's racquet, not djokovic's.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 2:52 PM

again with the condescending applause.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 2:53 PM

Thats always my fear with Rafa, the loss of focus and concentration when he feels comfortable and when Novak gets going he's hard to tame!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 2:55 PM

Horrible..anybodys match now

Rafa just gave it away

sanju , 6/7/13 2:56 PM

Rafa, wake up! The light be with you! Be strong, Rafa!

holdserve , 6/7/13 2:56 PM

I think it's over now, from the point Nole gets confident he is not gonna lose!

rafaelo , 6/7/13 2:57 PM

1-1...very entertaiing match.

Let's find out who'll take the 3rd set.

Vamos !!!

Raindrops , 6/7/13 2:57 PM

yes, I'm afraid you are right rafaelo. It's over.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 2:58 PM

I REALLY dont understand what happened to Rafa's level. Djokovic was no better in the games he broke serve than he was for the first set and a half. Awful end of the set from Rafa. And now Djokovic has a bit more belief. Rafa has himself to blame, if he does go on to lose this match, it will be that drop of level which cost him the match.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 2:58 PM

Novak with the momentum now. Gonna be tough for rafa

damianthorn , 6/7/13 2:59 PM

Hope for prepared for worst

sanju , 6/7/13 2:59 PM

1:1...Nole is back!!!

zare , 6/7/13 2:59 PM

1:1...Nole is back!!!
, 6/7/13 2:59 PM

Yes n how

sanju , 6/7/13 3:00 PM

always with the gestures of appreciation jesus, i don't believe this guy. he thinks he is god.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:02 PM

Rafa is gonna lose this..There is no doubt about it..

Djoko senses Rafas crisis

sanju , 6/7/13 3:04 PM

djokovic holding his hip. of course. he needs a potential excuse.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:05 PM

Rafa's first serve has disappeared and that is the problem

damianthorn , 6/7/13 3:07 PM

Rafa looked great in1 st set. Not over by far. Confidence and fight will come back.

chlorostoma , 6/7/13 3:07 PM

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:10 PM

match will be decided in this set only. it is not go five

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 3:11 PM

Again Rafa breaks early and I hate it..ofcourse ut breaking better than getting broken

sanju , 6/7/13 3:13 PM

VAMOS RAFA!!!! might not have been deserved according to mr. hawk eye, but I'll take it. And of course, the trainer for mr. Drama Queen.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:13 PM

Bad luck on the line call for djokovic..

DeadManWalking , 6/7/13 3:14 PM

only if he could make it double breaks

rafaelo , 6/7/13 3:16 PM

see? djokovic is fine...

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:16 PM

Something wrong with Djokovic, not sure what though.

rbennett , 6/7/13 3:18 PM

yeeeaaahee, double break.

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 3:19 PM

I wish i'd wished for money :)))))

rafaelo , 6/7/13 3:19 PM

he's out of gas. and now convincingly faking an injury.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:20 PM

Two breaks for rafa. Amazing, ddnt see this coming. Rafans dnt celebrate yet, Novak is also a good come back kid

damianthorn , 6/7/13 3:21 PM

Is Novak saving energy for 4th? Hes not even trying

sanju , 6/7/13 3:22 PM

Childishgambino - Stop hating on Djokovic, there's clearly something going on for him to suddenly go 5-0 down.

rbennett , 6/7/13 3:22 PM

Crikey. I didn't see this coming.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 3:22 PM

rafa should not get distracted by this novak..

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 3:22 PM

Rafans dnt celebrate yet, Novak is also a good come back kid
, 6/7/13 3:21 PM

We know , if thers 1 player Rafans dont take lightly till the last point is played, its Djoko

sanju , 6/7/13 3:24 PM

Rafa seems to play better when im not watching not watching!!

Whats wrong with Novak all of a he injured, seriously?!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 3:24 PM

you're right rbennett, I'm sorry. Maybe I should keep away from the keyboard for the rest of the match. I'm a bit of a hothead.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:24 PM

djoko will go kamikaze now

rafaelo , 6/7/13 3:25 PM

What's wrong with Nole?

zare , 6/7/13 3:26 PM

This match seems very strange to me?! Whats going on, really?!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 3:27 PM

just gifted the game away..

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 3:28 PM

I lost my stream at all no matter how i tried to get connected.

Is the game stopped or what?

Raindrops , 6/7/13 3:29 PM

good hold for nole! scares me!

rafaelo , 6/7/13 3:29 PM

maybe out of respect. just joking.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:29 PM

To me, this match should have been finished by now, in 3......damn it!!!!

VAM8S, Champ!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 3:30 PM

was it the sun? who pays these guys?

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:31 PM

I can't see Nadal losing this now.

rbennett , 6/7/13 3:32 PM

Tell me, how is Rafa's game so far? By his play, does any one think he will win?!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 3:32 PM

hahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahaha @the umpire's decision

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:32 PM

please tell me rafa is giong to win... :-s

rafaelo , 6/7/13 3:32 PM

nole looks dangerous for 4th set..

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 3:33 PM

Pascal chose to give Rafa a point penalty when it mattered zilch.

Nice hot breadstick!

Vamos Rafa!

nadline , 6/7/13 3:33 PM

djoko will go kamikaze now
, 6/7/13 3:25 PM

what does it mean rafaelo?

sanju , 6/7/13 3:33 PM

Was it the time violation point penalty at 40-0?

fedexal , 6/7/13 3:33 PM

Well, that was strange set. We will see now was Nole saving energy...

zare , 6/7/13 3:33 PM

Nole was obviously saving else can he be so flat all of a sudden

sanju , 6/7/13 3:34 PM

I am reduced to watch the scoreboard, no more streaming and i am not enjoing this...I want to see Rafa doing his work at court.

Raindrops , 6/7/13 3:35 PM

Novak is gonna roar now. Watch out rafa

damianthorn , 6/7/13 3:36 PM

Suddenly Novak starts 4th and holds to love. Told u was saving energy

sanju , 6/7/13 3:37 PM

Djokovic should rise a bit now, but its hard to imagine Rafa losing it.

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 3:37 PM

casually reminding you guys of the obvious on court coaching novak has received. on court coaching. obvious.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:38 PM

That was very silly of the umpire, don't think that was a good decision to give a point penalty. It was a big point although apparently Nadal is taking a long time on routine points.

rbennett , 6/7/13 3:38 PM

Just got back in time to see end of 3rd set. All I can say is WOW

French commies speculating if Nole is injured. Any take on that?

ed251137 , 6/7/13 3:39 PM

@ed yes, novak is injured. his ego is bleeding.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:40 PM

rafa's level drops a little!
kamikaze is the technique which Japanese pilots was duing during WW2 in which they go straight to US ships by their planes ;)

rafaelo , 6/7/13 3:40 PM

omg what a point

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 3:41 PM

Not sure how many of you have noticed rafa's adjustment in this match when returning nole's 2nd serve...on average, closer to the baseline...just keep ur play up rafa nd u will be fine

vamosrafa , 6/7/13 3:47 PM

rafa's spin is too hot to handle today

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 3:48 PM

zare -- I think it was very, very bad luck for Nole that it's so hot and dry. The Tennis Channel showed a comparison of the bounce of Nadal's ball from Monte Carlo to today. It might be getting literally double the bounce. Nole phoned in the last few games of the third...I wouldn't read too much into that scoreline.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 3:49 PM

Nole going to plan B.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 3:51 PM

childish: love that response. lol.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 3:51 PM

Rafa has served so intelligently today ! Super job

vamosrafa , 6/7/13 3:54 PM

Djokovic's return was absent today. That's a key also.

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 3:54 PM

Cheryl - Im suprised hot and dry doesn't mean that Djokovic can hit the ball harder.

rbennett , 6/7/13 3:55 PM

Nadal please bring the hammer down NOW

ed251137 , 6/7/13 3:55 PM

Where is Novak injured?!! If Rafa mistakenly drops his level you will see how injured Novak will be!! Rafa had better keep the intensity high, high, high, or else he WILL pay dearly!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 3:58 PM

Love you Rafa! Go for it! Vamos Rafa!

holdserve , 6/7/13 3:58 PM

Annnd Nadal breaks. I think that's probably it folks.

rbennett , 6/7/13 3:59 PM

^^^ Rafa's serve has been so SO smart's not just DJokovic not returning well. Though surely nobody can think that this is Djokovic at his best.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 3:59 PM

I'm a pantheist but this nadal makes me pray :))) pleaaaase hole rafa

rafaelo , 6/7/13 3:59 PM

Well it's over... :( Congrats to Rafa... He was a way better...

zare , 6/7/13 3:59 PM

Hot weather helps. Still, last 2.5 years are a lesson in how you go about facing your one toughest competitor. Not winning each time but doing your best and adjusting all you can to win as often as possible.

chlorostoma , 6/7/13 4:00 PM

Would you say Nadal has all the momentum..............................................? :-D

But seriously what has happened to Nole. He's checked out completely

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:00 PM

@ Cheryl, why does it matter?! What matters is Rafa came to play. Why must people always have to put an asterick after Rafa's games (or wins)?!!!!

I thought Novak played GREAT this tournement? Why all of a sudden he is not playing great?! Oh, maybe bcos Rafa is NOT letting him?!!!!...........geeze!!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 4:02 PM

I don't think it is over:-s

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:02 PM

rbennett - Djokovic can't hit the ball harder when it's bouncing up around his shoulders. The hot weather means that the ball often isn't in Djokovic's strike zone. On hard courts it's a different story, but on clay? Hot and sunny will always be better for Rafa.

15-30. Nole bringing up his level again.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 4:02 PM

And there's the break again. Nole not going down without a fight!

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 4:03 PM

Cheryl - Ah right yeah that makes sense, thanks :).

Also Djokovic just broke back! What the deuce?

rbennett , 6/7/13 4:03 PM

Oh, he doing a Nole. Do or die tennis.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:03 PM

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:05 PM

Now I am nervous if Rafa lets this set go to Nole.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:06 PM

the set and the match is gone :( I am so sad

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:06 PM

WHAT THE HELL IS NADAL DOING?? This drop-off again, he's just letting djokovic back into the match. Djokovic hasn't raised his level at all, its just an inexplicable drop in level from Rafa again! How can he be doing this.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 4:07 PM

And Rafa off the boil again. It'll be interesting to see if he holds here.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 4:07 PM

That was a MUCH-needed hold for Nadal, especially at love.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 4:10 PM

the set and the match is gone :( I am so sad
rafaelo, 6/7/13 4:06 PM

lol chill out dude

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 4:13 PM

plz rafa, no more drama. I will die... just hold it now.

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 4:16 PM

lets all pray for just one little hold :-s

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:16 PM

Break Nadal. Crazy, crazy match.

Rafa serving for a spot in the final.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 4:17 PM

French still discussing there must be an injury

Oh boy oh boy oh boy

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:17 PM

Djokovic hitting amazing shots then missing, let's see if Nadal can serve the match out.

rbennett , 6/7/13 4:17 PM

Rafa close out the match without drama

this is nervewracking.

I will eat my laptop if you don't close it this game.

Raindrops , 6/7/13 4:18 PM

Interesting the crowd is going for nadal. Is this a first?

DeadManWalking , 6/7/13 4:18 PM

Yeah plz, lets all pray, but at worst, it will go to a tiebreak and Rafa is still in for a great chance!! His tiebreak record is quite impressive!!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 4:18 PM

^^^ it is absolutely a first, DMW.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 4:19 PM

3 more points

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 4:19 PM

bad feelings again

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:20 PM

hate this but I don't have hope

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:22 PM

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 4:23 PM

Now we're on a tiebreaker! What the hell?

rbennett , 6/7/13 4:23 PM

this set is gone

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 4:23 PM

Dear god, cant watch a tie break. Eyes tight shut.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:24 PM

I think the match is gone

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:26 PM

AGAIN. What the hell is Nadal doing, he's never played the big points in a match so badly. Djokovic will not WIN this, but Rafa is giving himself plenty of chances to LOSE it. Not not not good enough. And as for djokovic apparent injury and all his histrionics and stretching he's moving absolutely fine now, what a faker.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 4:28 PM

Just had to switch sound off. They started talking about Soderling.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:29 PM

Rafa has lost this. HUGE CHOKE

willmw101 , 6/7/13 4:29 PM

Nadal returning SO far behind. Doesn't cause any troubles for Djokovic on his server right now

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 4:30 PM

@ Willow,

Thats exactly what I said before...............Novak is such a BIG faker!!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 4:30 PM

game over:|
I am very sad

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:32 PM

GAME OVER. Djokovic has essentially cheated to win this, lulling rafa in to a false sense of security with all his bullshit. What disgusting gamesmanship. And as for Rafa... Inexcusable dips in form in the big moments, so so strange, he had complete control of this match numerous times.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 4:32 PM

Novak wins the 4th set. THis 5th set will be huge for both men.

tj600 , 6/7/13 4:32 PM

This is a tense tense match . Nole is the favorite now . He has really come out blazing at 30-15 on Rafa's serve.

fedexal , 6/7/13 4:32 PM

How do you guys know he's a faker?

rbennett , 6/7/13 4:32 PM

change my mind...the match is one more set to i will spare my laptop haha.

Vamos Rafa !!!

into the 5th set

Raindrops , 6/7/13 4:32 PM

this is not a case of mismatched types of play. it's a case of a player's mental block against the other. this should have been over in 3, instead, djokovic is going to win this in 5.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 4:32 PM

Too good from Nole late in the fourth. Toughest out when back to the wall.

Conspirator , 6/7/13 4:33 PM

Yep Huge choke by nadal, not closing it at 6-5. Now hes going to lose even though hes played a better match than djokovic.

DeadManWalking , 6/7/13 4:35 PM

Game over. Rafa deerves to lose this. He was up a break in 2nd and 4th and still match goes to 5

Congrats Nole..

willnw..even if he lulled Rafa into fale sense of security, Rafa is a 11 time slam champion. He should know better

sanju , 6/7/13 4:35 PM

It was almost like Nole was trying to trick Rafa into a false sense of security in that 3rd set. Now Rafa's confidence is seeping away.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:36 PM

^^ Insane. I thought the same thing. I need a hug.

samprallica , 6/7/13 4:37 PM

Rafa is spent and done. You can see it

I didn't see 4th set, did Rafa serve for mach at 6-5?

sanju , 6/7/13 4:37 PM

over... rafa blew it away!!!

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:39 PM

The fights gone out of Rafa and Nole can smell blood.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:40 PM

Gutted..anyways Nole deserves it

sanju , 6/7/13 4:41 PM

Are you insane? How on earth could a player losing a set in purpose just to cheat and distract the rival ? Do you read youlselves ?

Djokovic always does this annoying thing, its just his game and his reaction to the game.

Anyways, this is still open. Chill out.

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 4:41 PM

this is a nightmare. incredible!

childishgambino , 6/7/13 4:41 PM

Yep. Rafa served at 6-5. Closest he got was 30-15.

DeadManWalking , 6/7/13 4:41 PM

Novak had the rhythm now. He will take it all the way this time.

sky , 6/7/13 4:42 PM

THis is one crazy match. I'm glad I've gotten a chance to watch it.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 4:43 PM

Fight Rafa pleeeeeeeeeeez

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:43 PM

Agreed Emiliano55 and Miss Murray!

rbennett , 6/7/13 4:47 PM

Woooow... just got home and they are still playing!
I was sure it was over...

zare , 6/7/13 4:48 PM

it's unfair this match is a 5 setter. and it's unfair that djokovic has to win it. but that's life. unfair.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 4:48 PM

Any chance Nole will tighten up?

No, I dont think so either.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:49 PM

This is really, realy open. I getting nervious despite not liking any of the 2 players competing.

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 4:51 PM

Yup but Nole said before the match that he was ready to play five sets. Looks ominous in retrospect. The guy is insane, he'll give me a lot of memories when his career is done.

samprallica , 6/7/13 4:51 PM

It's over Rafans. Hope Rafa takes it as well as he always does and fights on for Halle.....

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 4:52 PM

now he blames some supernatural force for his double error. GROSS.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 4:54 PM

This is not open. No way Novak is losing this after he was down n out ..

sanju , 6/7/13 4:54 PM

What happened to Rafa's promise he was going to play aggressive?

ed251137 , 6/7/13 4:55 PM

Nole and Nadal are so mentally tough. So much admiration for them both as competitors, they fight in a way that no other players do (that I can think of).

rbennett , 6/7/13 4:56 PM

nole consolidating breaks 2/2. rafa 0/3.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 4:58 PM

rafa loses! but I am proud. he fights

rafaelo , 6/7/13 4:58 PM

except for the third set of course

childishgambino , 6/7/13 4:59 PM

That game was CRUCIAL for Nadal. I won't be surprised if he breaks now.

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 5:03 PM

THAT was important hold...
Now Nole under pressure ...

zare , 6/7/13 5:04 PM

yes crucial hold n sum smart winners

Djokos forehand is on real fire

sanju , 6/7/13 5:05 PM

not a chance.

childishgambino , 6/7/13 5:05 PM

That drop shot was a dumb decision.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 5:06 PM

I've switched off the TV now.. before I start throwing up from the tension. Poor Rafa.. Come on, Rafa! You can do it.. throw down everything!

martine75 , 6/7/13 5:08 PM

I'm still gonna hold on to my faith. This isn't over until the fat lady sings. I will not give up on Rafa. He can still do this!

djb247365 , 6/7/13 5:08 PM

Either Rafa breaks back or Nole breaks again. This is not going like this until the end.

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 5:10 PM

Jean Gachassin is looking even glummer than when Federer was losing. He must be praying to the gods for Tsonga to make it into the final and save his skin.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 5:11 PM

Two more service can do it! C'MON NOLE... AJDE!!!!!

zare , 6/7/13 5:11 PM

It's over, Djokovic is not fighting Rafa's service games now, he knows Rafa cannot get a look on his, so he is counting on just holding this out.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 5:11 PM

go hard or go home rafa

childishgambino , 6/7/13 5:13 PM

crucial moment zare, you have to believe your man will pull this off... BELIEVE!!!

sky , 6/7/13 5:14 PM

Rafas playing horrible on break points, mishits n overhits

sanju , 6/7/13 5:16 PM

Oh my goodness!!! That could change everything now.

djb247365 , 6/7/13 5:17 PM

Ahh unlucky Djokovic.

rbennett , 6/7/13 5:17 PM

Rafa is totally exhausted he's running on an empty tank

ed251137 , 6/7/13 5:19 PM

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 5:20 PM

Vamos!!!! Rafa breaks back. I knew he could do it!!

djb247365 , 6/7/13 5:20 PM

I feel really sorry for Djokovic now, wonder how he'll respond.

rbennett , 6/7/13 5:20 PM

Oh my God!! Rafa breaks?!!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 5:20 PM

but still afraid

rafaelo , 6/7/13 5:21 PM

back on serve :)

zare , 6/7/13 5:21 PM

Zare...are you watching with the calm? :)

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 5:23 PM

Djokovic lost power... its all on Nadal's hands now

Emiliano55 , 6/7/13 5:24 PM

Yes!!! Rafa holds for 5-4. He can do this!!!

djb247365 , 6/7/13 5:24 PM

The acid test now for Nole.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 5:25 PM

crucial moment zare, you have to believe your man will pull this off... BELIEVE!!!

sky , 6/7/13 5:25 PM

That was just genius. Wowzers.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 5:28 PM

Have to admire Nole's resolve. He's got steel hausers in his legs and stainless steel nerves.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 5:29 PM

And of course darling Rafa too. His fighting with all his might.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 5:32 PM

I am dead. plz break now rafa

TheMightyRafa , 6/7/13 5:33 PM

Rafa seems to really want this! Thats good to see............I REALLy hopes he gets it!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 5:33 PM

this is nerve wrecking...

childishgambino , 6/7/13 5:34 PM

...with calm Cheryl? ....what a joke :)

zare , 6/7/13 5:34 PM

this is nerve wrecking...

childishgambino , 6/7/13 5:36 PM

this is nerve wrecking...

childishgambino , 6/7/13 5:38 PM

I was teasing a little. Your post came across as very calm. This really is such wonderful tennis. It's a much better match than I could have hoped for, the third set notwithstanding.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 5:47 PM

Wow, Rafa is holding with much more ease now. Puts the pressure back on Djokovic

djb247365 , 6/7/13 5:48 PM

so what now...?

martine75 , 6/7/13 5:48 PM

I'm going to whispher this very quietly, but Rafa has got a second wind

ed251137 , 6/7/13 5:49 PM

OMG .......... I am crazyyyyyyy

rafaelo , 6/7/13 5:52 PM

OMG I'm ecstatic right now!!!! He did it. I knew he could do it. Amazing!!!

djb247365 , 6/7/13 5:53 PM

That's a massive shame, really. Would have been nice to have a different winner for the French open final. Djokovic let himself get distracted and that slip that made him touch the net could have been pivotal also, big shame for Djokovic that.

rbennett , 6/7/13 5:53 PM

What a player!!!!!!!!!

Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmmoooooooooossssssss sssssssss!

nadline , 6/7/13 5:53 PM

congrats Rafa!!!!!

Sorry to Nole, zare, Danica and all of Nole's fans.

Conspirator , 6/7/13 5:54 PM

It's done!!!! I almost died. I'm gonna drink to stupor.

damianthorn , 6/7/13 5:54 PM

Nice for who?

nadline , 6/7/13 5:54 PM

OH MY GOD!!!! Rafa, Rafa, Rafa!!

VAM8S, my Champ!!! I need mouth-2-mouth right now but I am so gloriously ecstatic!!!!

Oh, Cheers to ALL Rafa fans!!!!

Commies to Novak fans, there is always next year!!! It was very close!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 5:55 PM

very good quality!
rafa i am sorry that I turn my back to you sometimes
you are my hero

rafaelo , 6/7/13 5:56 PM

Wow! Congrats Rafa and fans... Commies to Zare and Novak fans.

sky , 6/7/13 5:56 PM

Nadline - Djokovic fans? Serbia? I think it would have meant more to Djokovic because of his loss during the tournament. Oh well it's only sport at the end of the day!

rbennett , 6/7/13 5:57 PM

to Nadal fans -- that might have been the finest bit of mental toughness that Nadal has ever displayed, except his serving for the match at Wimbledon against Federer. I am so very, very impressed.

to Djokovic fans -- What a fighter! You have every EVERY reason to be proud of your player. He never stopped fighting. He came back from the brink again and again. I believe we are witnessing two of the greatest players of all time.

I am so proud to be a tennis fan.

cherylmurray , 6/7/13 5:57 PM

Djokovic has now joined the select 20s club, who's next?

nadline , 6/7/13 5:58 PM

nadal in 5 it is - other than federer over tsonga rest have been spot on

isfand , 6/7/13 5:58 PM

Am speechless. Rafa simply out-muscled Novak mentally.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 5:59 PM

i am about 8 months older than i was 6 hours ago

childishgambino , 6/7/13 5:59 PM

Oh people..Oh my Rafa did it.. Wat a comeback..what winners in final set..A0 2012 all over again, just that here Nole played Rafas role

There rafa missed sitter of BH, here Novak went on other side n hit lob n lost point

Rafa n Novak have now played 2 of the best matches ever..

In AO 2012 Novak protected his turf, here Rafa protected it

Group hug Rafans..m so happy

sanju , 6/7/13 5:59 PM

natashao , 6/7/13 6:00 PM

There is not a lot between these two players when they play each other. This is a big confidence booster for Rafa against Djokovic, to have lost this match would have been devastating as he had a chance to win it in the 4th set.

nadline , 6/7/13 6:01 PM

I don't want to celebrate this wins because I can feel for good friend Zare. So sorry but your guy almost did it.

HI-5 to my fellow Rafans.

Indeed it was a roller coaster ride and I am vomitting right now.

Vamos Rafa!

Raindrops , 6/7/13 6:02 PM

where are you sanju? congraaaaaaaat pal :)
and a free cup corn for my sister in my treat
he dis exactly the right thing, going for nole's forehand, and serve to his forehand, awsome :)

rafaelo , 6/7/13 6:02 PM

Should have finished it in 4 but even sweeter in 5. Congrats to Djokovic for pushing the King of Clay so hard.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 6:03 PM

I thought the torture would never end...

Congrats Rafa and Rafans!!!

phoenix , 6/7/13 6:03 PM

Thank you so much Rafaaa. What a match. Vamosssssssssss

gr8nadal , 6/7/13 6:05 PM

I have already congratulated Rafa on his set ago :(
This was another epic!
OK Nole... next year will be better.
Novak was unhappy in this match... Just waiting presser, maybe we will know what happened during the third set...
Warning, net point... well that's life...
Thanks to both of them for this magnificent match...

zare , 6/7/13 6:05 PM

Had Rafa lost this match, it would have been hard to make a case for him against Djokovic.

nadline , 6/7/13 6:06 PM

I ma here rafaelo..I am over the moon. I am so impressed with the way Rafa came and played in 5th, what CC BHs, what DTL FHs, what clutch serving.. I am so over the moon..

This match indeed was the final..I am not stressing aout the final now..Ill start on Sunday..right now Im gonna enjoy this for 1.5 days ..

Big congrats to you too i can ease ur afce muscles n go back to looking 24 :-)

sanju , 6/7/13 6:07 PM

I don't know if there are words! I haven't had much sleep. I have tears in my eyes! I thought it was gone when Rafa lost the fourth set. I couldn't post anything while the match was on.

I am so very proud of Rafa! So proud!

I just wanted to enjoy this with all of my fellow Rafa fans here!

One thing I will share here now. I said on another tennis site that this just might turn out to be Rafa's finest hour! Yes!!!

Commiserations to danica, zare and all the good Nole fans.

I can't stop crying tears of happiness!

Nativenewyorker , 6/7/13 6:07 PM

Every time these two play, they absolutely bring out the best in each other. I am so proud of Rafa for not giving up, and for believing in himself, even when he fell behind. The man is a true warrior of the sport. Roland Garros is his house, and clay is HIS turf, and he showed why he is the greatest clay court player in tennis history. Even when he is not at his very best, he finds a will and a way to win. Rafa has the heart of a true grand slam champion. Vamos!!!!

djb247365 , 6/7/13 6:07 PM

I'm speechless. At the end I completely forgot we were watching a SF. Couldn't think why Nole walked off the court.

I'm not sure I have the strength left to watch the 2nd one.

Funny old see-saw match .Neither of them always playing at their best at the same time and it could have gone either way.

Commiseration to his fans - he came so near to taking the match.

ed251137 , 6/7/13 6:09 PM

Indeed Cheryl, "two of the greatest players of all time", and I am happy to be a fan of both...Rafa foremost of course. :-)

phoenix , 6/7/13 6:09 PM

I need mouth-2-mouth right now but I am so gloriously ecstatic!!!!

, 6/7/13 5:55 PM

Mona..grrrr..please dont do that to any random guy at work..control urself :-)

sanju , 6/7/13 6:09 PM

Cheryl, keep picking against Rafa, it works. As Ricky would say, NID.

nadline , 6/7/13 6:10 PM

Nadline - Djokovic fans? Serbia? I think it would have meant more to Djokovic because of his loss during the tournament. Oh well it's only sport at the end of the day!
rbennett, 6/7/13 5:57 PM

All is fair in love and war.

nadline , 6/7/13 6:12 PM

The adrenalin still high and I don't think i can sleep right away...I need to stay for an hour or two here in TT hoping to subside the rush and adrenalin.

When Rafa was 3-1 in the 5th set, I shutdown the computer and clean the house even at night wherein everybody gone to bed already.

That is the good thing when Rafa is playing and on the losing situation, I become productive haha.

Vamossss to every Rafans

Raindrops , 6/7/13 6:12 PM

actually it's my feet muscles :D it was 5 hours of walking down around the house and watching :D

rafaelo , 6/7/13 6:13 PM

Commiserations to the true Novak fans. Your guy is a beast, in a good way. What can I say, I am speechless.........

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 6:14 PM

Djokovic is a casualty of nor upgrading Rafa's seeding at RG.

nadline , 6/7/13 6:15 PM

Without a doubt I am more than confident now that Rafa will win on Sunday. Every time I think he can't get any more amazing, he does. What a fighter!!!

Nole, as usual, played his heart out, but that pivotal point at 4-3, 30-all, where he ran into the net, was in my mind, the turning point of this match. Didn't help his cause when he missed a few overheads he should've made. He allowed Rafa to fight his way back into this match, and eventually as we now know, Rafa took advantage and won this match in 5.

I know that will sting for a while, for Nole, but when a player like Rafa is as determined to win as he was, there is no stopping him. He will find a way to win, and he did. Congrats to both players!!!!

djb247365 , 6/7/13 6:18 PM

sanju , 6/7/13 6:20 PM

Madrid 2009, we know how that loss affected Novak.

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 6:23 PM

Steve Tignor ?@SteveTignor 29m Djokovic wants the court watered, says it's slippery. "Pascal, make a decision..." #rg13

So this is what Djoko was talking about..Djoko Rafa didnt slip, your movement on clay is a bit less better than Rfa..

I think the pressure just got to Novak ..4 FH long in final set

sanju , 6/7/13 6:23 PM

Conspirator , 6/7/13 6:25 PM

Martina Navratilova ?@Martina 35m You can only have to hit great shots if your opponent is good enough- these guys are bringing the best out in each other- incredible

Right Marina..oth were hitting unbelievable winners in final set esp Rafa..God I still cant forget his DTL FH wnners and CC BH winners

Im very eager for Rafas presser

sanju , 6/7/13 6:25 PM

@sanju, but did you see the length on the forehand Returns from Rafa which caused Novak's forehand to collapse in the final game? Amazing. Rafa was still strong. It's like he was telling Novak: I am ready to be here all night long, are you?

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 6:26 PM

I don't think this will affect nadal ritb, remember 2009 AO semifanal ;)

rafaelo , 6/7/13 6:27 PM

I knew Rafa would do it, no matter what. He wasn't going to let this go. So it was a 5 hour match.
Hope Rafa has enough left in the tank to lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires on Sunday!
Congrats to Nole and his fans for the extraordinary fortitude and skills displayed by Nole.
This is the mirror image ( almost ) of AO 2012 with Rafa and Nole exchanging places.
They are close, so close you cannot insert a blade of grass between these two extraordinary tennis stars.
This match should have been the final but I am sure the organizers wanted Rafa and Nole on the same side to give Fed or Tsonga a chance to go to the finals. If the draw fixing was just for Fed, they would have given him Tipsarevic.

If Rafa wins on Sunday, the Hydra will retire. It is probably already hiding but is pinning its hopes on the winner of the other semifinal.

Vamos Rafa! I saw the great Rafa today, the Rafa who is invincible, not the Rafa I saw in 2011. Rafa's knee is still not ok but it is allowing him to be competitive and that's all my hero is asking. He will probably never be without pain and he has accepted it.

holdserve , 6/7/13 6:28 PM

Yes evn the tweener between the leg shot late in 5th ..what response and Djoko dumping the overhead into the net

Djoko buried too many overheads into the net and it was Rafa who made him falter..because he knew Rafa will run to retrieve all :-)

I am so surprised that Rafa survived a tough 5 setter against No 1..I really had my doubts if Rafa will have stamina to play best of 5
I am eager to see Federers tweet (if he does about the match)

sanju , 6/7/13 6:29 PM

RT @AndrewCastle63: "9 finals from 9 tournaments for #Nadal in 2013. He is a sporting giant."

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 6:31 PM

Hey, Emiliano, don't give up the day job.

nadline , 6/7/13 6:31 PM

thank you so so so much Rafa! my hero! i literally cant believe this day MY MAAANN

rafakid , 6/7/13 6:34 PM

guys please inform me on what is going on tweeter, I don't have tweeter account and I want to know what experts will say!
and anything from court presser?

rafaelo , 6/7/13 6:38 PM

How can Djokovic and Errani get the same prize money?

nadline , 6/7/13 6:41 PM

:)) lol

rafaelo , 6/7/13 6:44 PM

now, that I manage to calm down after this beautiful and breathtaking match I want to thank all my fellow Rafans (although I was really upset at some point with all the negativity spreading all over the tennistalk by certain Rafans...I am happy now so I won't judge you but please next time save your negativity and pessimism for some other is just too depressing to read...)

and for Nole's fans I must say I feel sorry for Nole, was just not meant to be this he proved he is the best next to Rafa on clay...great match! Nole came close this time but Rafa simply would not let it go...what a mental goliath our Rafa is!!!

BTW, there seems to be an outside force punishing RG for fixing the draw this year...they will be sentenced to watch two Spaniards playing the final on Sunday! :)

Vamos Rafa!

natashao , 6/7/13 6:48 PM

rafaelo, congrats fellow rafan. I owe you an apology, no?

Watching the 5th set, I was at least happy that Rafa would not have to serve out the match.

Started watching relatively calm but by the end, I've never been more anxious watching a match (maybe Wimbly '08 final).

That would have been a pretty devastating loss for Rafa but he dug in and played his very best when he had to.

Rafole are incroyable, fantastique!!!

Conspirator , 6/7/13 6:51 PM

Great to know that the tennis players are watching the match between those two!!! Rafa and Novak are good embassadors in terms of the level of tennis right now. They have taken it on such a high level that it will undoubtedly force other tennis players to raise their game. Congrats to both players, they did the tennis world proud!!!

I am happy that Rafa was able to turn things around and get this monkey off his back where Nole is concerned. He KNOWS he can beat Nole its just more about believing and executing and staying "colm".

@ Sanju..................i was having dizzy spells and!! Rafa is certainly NOT good for my health!!

I wonder what else the other tennis players, if any, will tweet about this maitch!!!

Hoping Rafa rests well in readiness for his next match on Sunday!!! Cant wait to see you on Sunday, Champ!!!!

Monalysa , 6/7/13 6:51 PM

there is a surprising stat!
rafa hit more winners than nole!
61 to 54
that's awesome! it was because of that concentration on forehand side ;)

rafaelo , 6/7/13 6:53 PM

oh Conspirator don't mention it :) it's okay buddy :)

Congrats to both guys . Well played . I am always a big fan of Nole's fighting spirit and sporting spirit.

Coming back to the match, I guess Rafa deserved more . He was the better player for a set and half. And then Nole just ran away with set in the last 20 minutes.
Again Rafa was the better player for almost 2 sets and till 6-5 30-15 on his serve in the fourth set. And same story got repeated again. Nole just ran away with the set and got a break up in the next 20 minutes .

Then Rafa again started to hit winners in the fifth set and played a blinder . I think 5th set was of better standard than AO 2012 final fifth set(if you leave out the last service game from Nole).

In the end Rafa deserved it for just hanging in there. This loss would have been more devastating for Rafa than Nole . Lets hope Rafa gets good rest and recovers well for the final.

Conspirator , 6/7/13 7:18 PM

Amazing how Novak started having conversations with the Umpire in the final game, IN THE 5th SET! How could he do that? What was he thinking? Of course that was a distraction. And this is exactly what he did in Madrid...............

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 7:19 PM

@conspirator If you think that Nole was the better player, then I'd say you were born upside down :).

fedexal , 6/7/13 7:22 PM

I think that net fault and that forehand down the line which was a miss hit by rafa and fell down at the end of the court where the key points ;)

Djorde Djokovic is ranked #1588 in the world for a reason.

nadline , 6/7/13 7:27 PM

RITB..he wanted the court to be watered as he said it was slippery

Rafa did not slip even once..Djokos footwork was bad

Nole was better player..Puhleez..Rfa hit more winners..less UE..

Rafa hit 61 winners to 54 for Nole

Rafa made 44 UE to 75 for Nole

Rafa won 177 points to Noles 158

How on earth was Nole better? tleast accept the reality and congragulate fairly little Novak brother

sanju , 6/7/13 7:28 PM

Thats classless from Djorde. Rafa had way more chances to win that match overall than djokovic, the stats back that up.

willmw101 , 6/7/13 7:33 PM

@sanju, btu that was a stupid thing to do at that juncture in the match and it cost him.....not that I am complaining but I kind of expect that from a junior player not from the #1 in the world. This is what he did in Madrid......

RITB he just wanted to halt Rafas momentum somehow. He knew Rafa was on fire and maybe he wanted time to compose his thoughts n catch his breath

WAtever it is, u dont ask that at 8-7 , its dont between sets

sanju , 6/7/13 7:43 PM

Oh God Ferru needs to play atleat 4

What the hell are u doing Tsonga, nutcase..your old self is

sanju , 6/7/13 7:44 PM

Anyone who says Novak was the better player is either stupid or delusional, possibly both. The only reason the match went to a 5th was Rafa contriving to commit harakiri in the 2nd and 4th sets.

However, I am glad this went to a 5th because now Rafa can see that he is by far and away the better player. If Djokovic failed to capitalise on Rafa's tension in the 2nd and 4th sets then Rafa knows if he plays with calm he can smoke Djokovic anytime anywere.

This match will calm Rafa's nerves. From now on he will know he can neutralise Djokovic and play without pressure..........

rafaisthebest , 6/7/13 7:46 PM

I've been around TT since '07 but rarely post, back when nadline was still carrie.
At 7-7 final set, I was afraid that Novak would do the exact same thing Rafa did to Roger 5 years ago, dethroning a legend on his best surface. I feel like had Rafa lost this match, it would have started a new era in tennis.
Congrats Rafa you've got balls the size of a planet... probably one the best display of mental toughness I've ever witnessed aside from Wimby '08.
Nole's time will come eventually I also wish him the best of luck next year.

On a side note, Nole has joined the Club 20, maybe David Ferrer will soon follow on Sunday.

my father hates rafa, and he is still arguing about that break point in the 3rd set that was a wring call by umpire :))))

rafaelo , 6/7/13 7:50 PM

I am really impressed by Rafa's level in the fifth set. Nole was playing really good and still Rafa grabbed the momentum. Rafa is so strong mentally and I guess this win might be the most important win of his career apart from first win at RG SF against Fed where he just signalled his arrival.

So, Rafa's two most important wins of his career have come in the SF of his favorite slam.

fedexal , 6/7/13 7:52 PM

Looks like Rafa has reached his peak today. Is this a cause for worry on Sunday whoever he meets?

phoenix , 6/7/13 7:57 PM

I had to watch the fifth set again. Rafa really came up with some unbelievable shots when it counted. I don't know how he does it. He's got the heart of a warrior! Even with Rafa coming up with brilliant shots, I think he willed himself to win this. He was stronger mentally when it counted.

I will go back and watch the match from the beginning to see the part that I missed. Now I just hope that Rafa will be able to recover for Sunday's final. As we all knew, this one was the real final.

So now Rafa will get a chance to play for his 8th title and do what no other male tennis player has ever done!

Nativenewyorker , 6/7/13 7:59 PM

No @phoenix, this match was a re-birth for Rafa, don't worry about Sunday. Mymo is taking care of the recovery process as we speak.........

rafaelo , 6/7/13 8:16 PM

rafaelo, would your father just happen to be a fan of a certain Swiss player?

Conspirator , 6/7/13 8:23 PM

the key was Rafa got broken first in the fifth...if he was leading a break God knows what could have happened...:))

natashao , 6/7/13 8:23 PM

I think Rafa-Nole matches have been very competitve and Rafa lost little bit of mental edge when he lost Indian Wells and Miami . He lost Wimby and got pegged back . In USO, I always feel that Nole will be favorite against Rafa . Those losses just set Rafa back.

But last year's AO 2012 finals instilled Rafa with confidence that he can stand toe to toe with Nole on his favorite surface . After that its no looking back. And today's win will go a long long way in ensuring the fact that Rafa will have his mental edge back.

Rafa's comeback has been a dream .

yeah Ricky, I was about to comment on the number of post here after a match!!!! Is that a record? Records just seem to follow Rafa every!!!!

Monalysa , 6/8/13 8:07 AM

Hmmm, I posted here on Friday, some hours after the match and after I came home but I don't see the comment. Maybe I'll come back later to write a few things again - the first part of my comment was all congrats to Rafa and fans, the second a response to RITB's view about Rafa being "by far and away the better player" than Nole. I know it was written by an ecstatic fan, but really???

danica , 6/11/13 12:55 AM

@danica, 12:55AM

please refer to the post by @Conspirator, 7:18 where he quotes a tweet from Djordje Djokovic where he congratulates Rafa for his win but then says Novak was a better player and was unlucky to lose. What is your opinion on that comment, please? The fact that you ignored that comment by Djordje, which was in fact the comment my post was a response to, leads me to conclude you agree with Djordje. Am I correct?

I stand by my comment that Rafa was by far and away the better player and here is why: Rafa won the match. The player who wins the match is the one who is/was the better player unless you subscribe to the Gulbis doctrine which says the player who hit more winners during a match, even if he loses, is the better player. Come to think of it, Novak would not even pass the Gulbis doctrine test because Rafa had way more winners than him! So, by any measure, in humble opinion, and yes, my opinion is that of an ecstatic fan

rafaisthebest , 6/11/13 5:34 AM

Sorry, hit the return button before finishing my sentence.........

In my opinion this makes Rafa the better player on the day. If you disagree, I would live to hear why because that would help me understand Djordje's assertion that Novak was the better player. I am a fan but I can back my assertion that Rafa was the better player with facts: Rafa won, he posted better performance stats than Djokovic. I would love to know Djordje's arguments for saing Novak was the better player on the day, an opinion you apparently agree with.

rafaisthebest , 6/11/13 5:41 AM

This is like Fed saying at AO '09 that the better player lost. Nole and Fed have many things in common. True Djordje said it, not Nole but like the obscene dance on top of a car roof, we have to believe Nole approved.
Anyway, what does it matter who was the better player as per opinion of these guys? History will record who won. And it is our Rafa.

holdserve , 6/11/13 5:56 AM

To be fair to Djorde he posted another tweet later within minutes saying Rafa deserved to win and that Djoko was just unlucky. Guess in matter of minutes he got so much flak and beatings for that post, he was forced to clarify asap.

sanju , 6/11/13 6:10 AM

Thank you for the clarification @sanju. As you say, Djordje must have quickly realized his tweet was disrespectful to Rafa and he corrected himself. Kudos to him. I have no problem with Djordje saying Novak was unlucky but the words, "Novak is the better player" had no place in a congratulatory, were meant to diminish Rafa's win, and were correctly condemned by all right thinking people. This is not the first time Djordje has pulled a stunt like that. He seems to be a young man who wants to please his brother very much.

rafaisthebest , 6/11/13 6:24 AM

He seems to be a young man who wants to please his brother very much.
