Wawrinka outlasts Gasquet in French Open epic Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka came from 2 sets down to defeat Richard Gasquet in a more than four hour barn-stormer.

In one of the matches of the tournament so far, Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka clawed his way from 2 sets down to upend France's Richard Gasquet 6-7(5), 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 8-6.

Wawrinka, who battled a thigh injury coming into Roland Garros, battled hard in the first set, only to be edged in the breaker by Gasquet. But the Swiss man looked down and out in the second set. Gasquet surged to a 4-0 lead and Wawrinka took an injury timeout to have his thigh worked on.

But just that quickly, Wawrinka found his game again. Gasquet still managed to take the second set, but the Swiss man was clearly on his way to a rebound.

The third set was on serve at 4-4, when a disputed call sparked Wawrinka's temper. The No. 9 seed managed to hold serve and steal the set out from underneath Gasquet with the Frenchman serving at 4-5 to stay in the set.

Sets 4 and 5 were equally as competitive, with Wawrinka eventually securing the only two breaks late in each set to seal the impressive comeback win.

Wawrinka will take on Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals.
