  • Djokovic pounds Pella, Dimitrov next

    5/30/13 6:39 PM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic pounds Pella, Dimitrov next Novak Djokovic cruises past Guido Pella in the Roland Garros second round on Thursday. Djokovic will next go up against familiar foe Grigor Dimitrov.

Novak Djokovic continued his French Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 destruction of Guido Pella during second-round action on Thursday afternoon. Djokovic served at 72 percent and he saved the only break point he faced to advance in one hour and 26 minutes.

Rain had delayed the Serb's opening 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-5 victory over David Goffin on Tuesday and it did the same with this one. When they finally got on the court, Djokovic wasted no time taking advantage of an opponent who was coming off a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, 12-10 marathon against Ivan Dodig.

The world No. 1 converted two of five break chances in the first set and struck 11 winners to Pella's five. Djokovic cruised through the second in even easier fashion, refusing to surrender a single game. Pella managed to hold serve twice in set three, but the 83rd-ranked Argentine saw his lone break chance go by the wayside and he never showed any real sign of making it competitive.

Pella, appearing in the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, wrapped up his effort with one ace, four double-faults, 10 winners, and 34 unforced errors.

Next up for Djokovic is Grigor Dimitrov, who scored a 7-6(6), 6-7(8), 6-3 upset after three hours and two minutes in their most recent head-to-head meeting at the Madrid Masters. The 22-year-old Bulgarian disposed of French qualifier Lucas Pouille 6-1, 7-6(4), 6-1 on Thursday.

Nevertheless, the young, inexperienced Pouille put up a credible performance by managing to make the 2nd set competitive.

The next encounter between Dimitrov and Djokovic will be interesting if Grigor can last the course without cramping.

Disgusting filthy uneducated scum seventeen-20, go back into your mother's back end where you came out from when SHE farted! lol.

jean , 5/31/13 3:17 PM

Oh Seventeen, ure actually expecting Rafa to make it to the semi?!!!.........................nice!!!

Monalysa , 5/31/13 3:40 PM

Novak's biggest threats are baby-baby-fed Grigor, baby-fed Gasquet and fed/tsonga. He will not lose to rafa or whoever makes the semis from that quarter. He tends to do well against one-dimensional players (relatively speaking) who cannot flatten their groundstrokes and rely too much on top-spin. There is a reason nole is 8-3 against nadal at his prime.

Good luck to GD and ND. Show the world how tennis is played.

Djokovic will win easily in straights.

dimitrov will give djo a good match...its his variety that can worry djo..

vamosrafa , 6/1/13 7:05 PM

dimitrov must hope it gets even more windy...

vamosrafa , 6/1/13 7:07 PM

dont understand the optimism in dimitrov's chances. He's going to lose easily.

novakisthebitch , 6/1/13 7:10 PM

djokovic is already crushing dimitrov. LOL Conspirator.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 7:13 PM

Good to see djokovic has whipped out that disgusting shirt again.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 7:15 PM

I can't even watch it. Forced to watch the Isner loop freak show.

12 match points saved.

#Brutal

Conspirator , 6/1/13 7:25 PM

djokovic cruising

willmw101 , 6/1/13 7:26 PM

dimitrov is playing so badly. 15 unforced errors already!!

willmw101 , 6/1/13 7:29 PM

In the states they are showing the Haas/Isner match. Isner just won the fourth set tb and now it's on to a fifth set.

The networks have exclusive coverage on the weekends, so we have very little choice. I don't know if Dimitrov will be able to hang with Nole in a best three out of five set match.

Nativenewyorker , 6/1/13 7:30 PM

This match has been way overhyped. Terrible from dimitrov, this will be over soon.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 7:31 PM

grigor disappoints me!

rafaelo , 6/1/13 7:39 PM

match is a damp squib. Crowd is deathly silent, no atmosphere at all.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 7:41 PM

Constipator: what are the chances your intelligent comment provokes bright poster willma to start naming female reproductive organs?

rfzr , 6/1/13 7:45 PM

this is absolutely terrible from dimitrov. losing every point with errors.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 7:48 PM

Just like pappy Fed when he plays the Top 4 now.

Conspirator , 6/1/13 7:54 PM

complete capitulation from dimitrov. djokovic having to do nothing. Amazing.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 7:58 PM

I think Dmitrov is a (lot) overhyped. So it looks like Rafa and Nole will clash in SF. Going by current form, you have to say Nole is a big favorite.

fedexal , 6/1/13 7:58 PM

30 Unforced errors from dimitrov in 12 games.... that is incredible.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 8:02 PM

Yes but that's nothing new. Rafa is like an investment.

Conspirator , 6/1/13 8:04 PM

no atmosphere. Crowd hating this.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 8:04 PM

LOL Eurosport have abandoned screening the match!! Dont think they've ever done that for a number 1's match before.

willmw101 , 6/1/13 8:06 PM

@ Conspirator.............investment..............lol!!! I like that!!

Fedexal, I agree Rafa did not play his best but Novak really is not being challenged..............this is like match practice out there!!!!

Im not saying that Rafa will beat Novak if they meet but lets wait and see what happens in the second week.................you cant always count on form in tennis!!!! Havent you learnt that already?

Monalysa , 6/1/13 8:14 PM

Grigor breaks. He can take it to 5 sets. Lol

nadline , 6/1/13 8:38 PM

The spectators have made their way to the exit.

nadline , 6/1/13 8:40 PM

alert alert alert, grigor breaks.

Raindrops , 6/1/13 8:41 PM

Novak now needs treatment on his right arm. There is hope for Dimitrov.

nadline , 6/1/13 8:42 PM

Novak, having shoulder problems................shu!!!!

Monalysa , 6/1/13 8:44 PM

C'MON willma... you can do it better !!!

zare , 6/1/13 8:45 PM

Someone please wake me up when Grigor starts cramping..........

rafaisthebest , 6/1/13 8:49 PM

Yes... nice and easy... so much about babFed :)

zare , 6/1/13 8:53 PM

Nole came in with an obvious gameplan but I would've liked to have seen him take riskier cuts on the forehand DTL. Otherwise, no real complaints - looks good for bigger things.

samprallica , 6/1/13 8:56 PM

Congrats to Nole on his 500th victory in professional carrier :)

zare , 6/1/13 8:59 PM

Jelena Gencic, Nole's first coach and the women who also discovered Monica Seles and told the Sanchez family to pay more attention to little Arantxa, died today. If Nole knew about that, he handled it well.
Being in the States, I basically didn't see the match. Good to know it was finished today and pretty convincingly.

danica , 6/1/13 9:38 PM

RT @christophclarey: "Can confirm Novak #Djokovic was told of childhood coach Jelena Gencic's death only post match and was too affected to come to press #RG13"

rafaisthebest , 6/1/13 11:11 PM

Thanks RITB.
Smart move not to tell him.
