Raonic advances, Monfils beats Gulbis Fourteenth seed Milos Raonic made the third round with a victory over France's Michael Llodra. The Canadian is joined in the round of 32 by former world No. 7 Gael Monfils, who upended Latvia's Ernests Gulbis.

    (14) Milos Raonic def. Michael Llodra 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2

World No. 16 Milos Raonic advanced to the third round by virtue of his four-sets victory over veteran Michael Llodra. The 22-year-old struck 24 aces and 75 winners through two hours and 40 minutes of play.

"(During the match there were) moments I wish I could have gotten going a little bit better, but fortunately in that tiebreak when I felt like my back was up against the wall I got going and sort of carried that through the fourth set. I'm proud with how I dealt with (the situation) and the adversity I had to face throughout the match," said the 14th seed.

Raonic is through to take on 23rd seed Kevin Anderson in the next round. The South African rallied to a four-set victory over Russia's Evgeny Donskoy in round two.

    Gael Monfils def. Ernests Gulbis 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-2

France's Gael Monfils is through to the round of 32 after holding off Latvia's Ernests Gulbis in four sets. The 26-year-old Frenchman tallied 8 aces and 29 winners through three hours and 15 minutes of play.

"A loss is a loss. I'm going to go now and work on my fitness," Gulbis assessed. "I was getting tired with my legs in the fourth set, but I also think if I would have won the third set, it would be the other way around. Because Gael was also tired. It was more mental than physical. I cannot allow myself to feel like this in the fourth or fifth set."

Monfils completed the match with seven of 11 break points converted. He is scheduled to take on 32nd seed Tommy Robredo in the third round.

I luckily got to see part of the Gulbis match. He still has a long way to go before he can consistently be a real threat. It was so weird, he would completely disappear mentally for like 5-6 games, then 2 seconds later play unstoppable tennis for a few games, then disappear again, reappear again...
I wish he'd learn how to maintain his intensity.
