  • Djokovic gets past Goffin in French Open first round

Djokovic gets past Goffin in French Open first round Novak Djokovic takes care of David Goffin in straight sets on Tuesday at Roland Garros. Next up for Djokovic is Guido Pella, a 12-10 in the fifth winner over Ivan Dodig.

Novak Djokovic kicked off his French Open campaign with a 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-5 victory over David Goffin during first-round action on Tuesday evening. After an extended rain delay to begin the day, Djokovic prevailed in two hours and 13 minutes to get the match in before darkness.

Goffin, who reached the fourth round last year before taking Roger Federer deep into a fourth set, accounted himself well right from the start. Although he has generally struggled on serve, the 22-year-old Belgian held all six of his service games to force an opening-set tiebreaker. Goffin recovered from an early mini-break, but a double-fault at 5-5 proved to be his undoing.

Djokovic managed to get the job done prior to a decider in each of the next two sets. The top-ranked Serb gave back a break midway through the second but earned one more scalp of the Goffin serve before closing it out at 5-4. Djokovic broke at 5-5 in the third on a break point in which his opponent slipped at the baseline and he capitalized on his first match point at 6-5 with an inside-out forehand winner.

"It was a difficult day with the rain delays," assured the No. 1 seed, who will face Guido Pella on Thursday. "I warmed up I think five or six times today.... I was serving well. When I needed to come up with my best game, I did that."

Pella advanced 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 over Ivan Dodig just moments after Djokovic's triumph.

I watched the whole match, very high standard from Goffin. This was a good test for Nole first up and he will be happy he got it done in 3. Enjoyed watching them both, if Goffin can get inspired at the smaller tournaments against the lesser players his ranking will surely rise?? He has the ability to be a top 20 player.

Good for Nole to have closed it in straight sets, it would have been difficult to lag the match for today.
Pella is bound to be knackered for this next match..hope he puts up a bit of a show at least.
